Case Study: Aaron Marshall Dalusung

A study on his exemplary performance in basketball

I. Introduction

No one is good at everything but, everyone is good at something (Kanadi, 2012). Some
people are born gifted with different sets of talents and skills, some acquire them as they go
through life. These talents and skills are nurtured and developed as we grow and these may
lead to success in life. There are certain factors in a persons physical, mental, emotional, social,
and spiritual characteristics that affect their performance in a specific field of interest. There
are positive effects which can lead to an exemplary performance, and there are negative effects
which causes inefficient execution. This study is conducted in order to find out the factors that
allows Aaron Marshall Dalusung to display an exemplary performance in basketball. The
researchers chose this specific sport due to its popularity, and since most of the Filipino men
and some women are inclined in playing basketball. The result of this study will make others be
aware of what makes the subject good at basketball, and allow them to emulate his
characteristics or techniques for a better performance at the sport.

II. Methods

The researchers have conducted a semi-structured interviewing process wherein five

predetermined set of open questions is prepared beforehand. These questions serves as an aide-
memoire to prompt and guide the whole duration of the interviewing process. This allowed the
researchers to have a direct and interactive conversation with the interviewee, Aaron Marshall
Dalusung, and enabled the researchers to freely move around certain topics and to further delve
into the answers given by the interviewee. Furthermore, an observation has taken place during
one of Marshalls actual basketball practices where the researchers were able to draw results
from.

The subject is determined based on his performance at the sport and his availability for
the researchers to conduct the interview and observation. For this case study, the researchers
aim to find out what physical characteristics and techniques the subject possess and employs
when playing the sport. Here is the list of the predetermined set of open questions that is utilized
during the interviewing process:

1. How long have you played basketball?

2. Who taught and made you love to play the sport?

3. In your opinion, what skills do a basketball player need for him to be considered
exemplary?

4. Do you think that your height has something to do with your performance?

5. How often do you play?

III. Results & Discussion

Based on our collected data, height, hand-eye coordination, shooting and aiming
brought advantage to his exemplary performance in basketball. His height helps him reach
towards the basketball goal and defend the ball against his opponents. Hand-eye coordination,
shooting, and aiming are the ones that carries the whole team to victory. This helps him to
catch, pass and shoot the ball while being guarded by someone during the game. With these
factors, it made him play the sport basketball well and easier.

1. How long have you played basketball?

- I have been playing for 7 years.

2. Who taught and made you love to play the sport?

- My cousin taught me how to play basketball because we played it

together before.

3. In your opinion, what skills do a basketball player need for him to be considered
exemplary?

- The skills a basketball player should possess are his height, hand-eye
coordination, shooting, and aiming.

4. Do you think that your height has something to do with your performance?

- Yes because this makes the opponent not to reach the ball

5. How often do you play?

- Oftentimes, I just play for fun.

Height: Basketball players are required to be tall, muscular and well-built athletes

because their height, appearance and shape helps them to reach toward the basketball goal and
defend the ball against their opponents. In the Philippine setting, Male professional basketball

players must be at least 5 inches taller than the average male. According to NBA.com and Dr.

Steven Halls on Halls.MD.com, Height tends to accompany other important features for a

basketball player, including arm reach and hand span.

Hand-eye coordination, aiming and shooting: Basketball is an excellent sport for

someone who wants to improve his hand-eye coordination. Basketball forces you to use hand-

eye coordination to catch, pass and shoot the ball while being guarded by someone who is trying

to keep you from doing all three. Measuring the force, spin and arc that needs to be put on a ball

to shoot it through a horizontal hoop is a skill made more difficult by the constraints of opposing

defenders and a game clock.
