Prematurity Awareness
November is National Prematurity
Awareness Month. Nearly a
half million babies in the United
Statesthats 1 out of every 9
are born premature each year. It
is a birth that occurs at least three
weeks before a babys due date. It
is also known as preterm birth (or
less than 37 weeksfull term is
40 weeks). Important growth and
development occur throughout
pregnancyespecially in the final
months and weeks.
The earlier a baby is born, the more
severe his or her health problems
are likely to be. Although babies
born very preterm are a small
percentage of all births, these very
preterm infants account for a large
proportion of infant deaths. More
infants die from preterm-related
problems than from any other single
cause. Some premature babies
require special care and spend
weeks or months hospitalized in a
neonatal intensive care unit. Those
who survive may face lifelong
problems such as: intellectual
disabilities; cerebral palsy; breathing
and respiratory problems; visual
problems (including retinopathy
of prematurity); hearing loss, and
digestive problems.
Risk Factors - Even if a woman
does everything right during
pregnancy, she still can have a
premature baby. There are some
known risk factors for premature
birth. For example, one risk factor
is having a previous preterm birth.
Additionally, although most black
women give birth at term, on
average, black women are about
50% more likely to have a premature
baby compared to white women.
The reasons for the difference are
an area of intense research.

Atascadero Printery

I enjoy writing articles of mystery,
featuring adventure and exciting
discoveries. I want to tell you
about the most interesting
building in Atascadero. This
edifice is full of intrigue. It is
called the Printery Building and
from the outside it can look a
little spooky at night. It even
looks a little spooky during the
day. I was recently given a tour
of the old Printery by a volunteer
named Jim Dewing, who is one
of the many people getting this
building back on its feet. If the
people of Atascadero want to
continue to build the community,
this building will shine as a jewel
in the downtown historical area.
The Printery was the first major
building built in the new town
of Atascadero back in 1914. E. G.
Lewis, considered the founder
of Atascadero, had it built so he
could print a magazine he was
publishing. By approximately
1924, most of the employees of the
Printery had been laid off and a Mr.
Bishop bought the building. All of
the giant printing presses were
shipped off to Oakland, leaving
a big empty building. Mr. Moran

bought the building and turned
it into a college. In the 1950s, it
was bought by the Masons and
turned into a Masonic Temple. As
the years went by, the local
school district and the Sheriff
department used the building as
well as some other businesses.
In 2003, there was a terrible
earthquake and the building was
boarded up until very recently. A
group of people came together to
organize the Atascadero Printery
Foundation and purchased
the Printery building with the
intention to rescue it. Today, the
building has an iron fence around
it because people have broken
in and caused a lot of damage. I
paid a visit to the Printery recently
in response to a shout out to
the community to help clean
up the inside and the outside. I
parked in front on Olmeda Street
and walked up to the building
where I met Jim. I asked him if
he could take me on a tour of
the old building. This is where
the adventure begins. The front
doors were sealed, so after we
donned hard hats, we entered the
building from the side.
