READ THE QUESTIONS!
WHY? YOU KNOW WHAT YOURE DOING AND YOURE NOT WASTING TIME STEP-BY-STEP TIPS AND GUIDE STEP 1: DRAW THE LINES! Look at instructions. Find the phrase use materials from line X to line Y. Draw a straight line BEFORE line X and another straight line AFTER line Y. OR STEP 2: DRAW THE BOXES! Always start on a fresh new page. An ideal box should have 5 columns and 26 rows so that you will have 130 boxes. STEP 3: THE 10 WORDS GIVEN Find the 10 words given. Copy the 10 words given into the first 10 boxes. STEP 4: ANSWER THE COMPREHENSION Qs Pay attention to: the WH-questions and the keywords in the question. They will help you locate the answers. the pronouns used. Change the pronouns accordingly, if needs to. STEP 5: WHAT THE QUESTION WANTS Read the summary question. Find out what the question wants: Is it step-by-step instruction? (verbs) Is it what the writer did? (verbs) Is it what the writer felt? (adjectives) Is it a list things/facts? (nouns) STEP 6: WHERE IS THE 1ST POINT? Go back to line X. Look for keywords in the text that coincides with the question. STEP 7: FIND ALL CONTENT POINTS Find the content points and underline them. There are usually 13 to 15 content points for every comprehension text. DO NOT INCLUDE ELABORATION (who, what, where, when, etc.) DO NOT WRITE THE SUMMARY yet until you have found at least 10 or 11 content points. STEP 8: WRITE YOUR SUMMARY Once you have 10 or 11 content points, you can start writing your summary. REMEMBER: Each sentence must be a complete sentence (has subject and verb) Change pronoun(s) if you are required to do so. STEP 9: THE WORDCOUNT At the end of your summary, dont forget to place a word count of your summary. For example: (128 words) REMEMBER: DO NOT EXCEED 130 words (+/-5 words) DO NOT CHEAT as examiners will count the words. LETS TRY!
