Matthew 18:3 And he said, "I tell you the truth,
unless you change and become like little children, you
will never enter the {realm} of heaven." niv
Little children aren't prejudice; prejudice is
taught. It is defined as a "preconceived opinion that is
not based on reason or actual experience". Prejudice
arises out of fear of the unknown, and often becomes
generalized for entire populations.
We talk about love, forgiveness, peace, joy,
kindness... during Worship and in Sunday school
classes. But old teaching of exclusivity is very difficult
to change. We need to be reminded over and over what
Jesus says and does, NOT what is done is our culture.
We are Christ's CHILDREN first and we need to act
like it!
We are embracing a new emergence of love
and joy, even amidst the division and pain that can
swirl around us. What is the mission of the church to
each other and to the world? How can Zion UCC May-
view be a part of a continuous shout of joy, instead of
a complacent cover of silence?
Below is a letter to our congregation and read-
ers beyond, of welcome. Sunday, October 22, we af-
firmed and commissioned our Welcoming Committee,
and this is their letter of introduction. This is living the
Gospel!
We are moving slowly as a congregation and as
individuals, exploring, having conversation, sharing
thoughts, feelings and experiences. NOTHING is set in
stone. This is an organic process that will grow and
develop as Spirit leads and guides.

Hello and Welcome Everyone,
As you take time out of your daily schedule to
read this, I hope that you are experiencing Gods love,
Gods blessing and Gods grace.

 To move forward with this process, a core
team has been formed, and called the Welcoming
Committee. The members of this committee are Mar-
tha Hawthorne, Amanda Hoeppner, Scott Alvested,
Bill and Denise Bainbridge. The committee will be
meeting to gather information, to educate themselves,
and to plan visits and listen to our church family
whom we love very much.
This summer, the Church Council of Zion
UCC voted to move forward on a congregational ex-
ploration to become an open and affirming church.
After this process the Welcoming Committee will be
asking our church family to vote on passing a public
statement that says we welcome all persons, includ-
ing persons of the LGBTQ community. The official
mission statement would include that Zion United
Church of Christ of Mayview, Missouri is an Open
and Affirming church.
In closing, we have been thinking of how the
passing of the vote, to include all, may look. Picture
yourself in a Sunday School class, or one of our
church lunches, or talking with someone from the
church family. During the conversation, you say I
would like to invite my aunt, or my brother, or a
neighbor, or a classmate to our church. If I love
them, would you love them as you love me?

Concerns
Please continue to surround in love and prayer,
those experiencing health difficulties & or recovering
from surgery, the loss of family and friends, & those
adjusting to new seasons in their lives:Dale Ritter's
daughter Kim died; Marvin Rechterman died; Dot
Renno Nadler died; Henry Proett died; Lexi Talli died
by suicide. Let us keep these souls and their families
in our prayers. Pastor Kristins dad, Austin, died;
Sadie & Virgil Miller's granddaughter Aysha Kendall
died; Tessa Hatcher--Larry Willard's daughter, is at N.
KC Hospital--she is dying; Carol Schemmer has can-
cer in both lungs and was in a car accident; Rev.
Karen Redman will have a heart procedure before
back surgery; Rev. Bob Atkinson will have back sur-
gery Nov. 8; continued prayers for Rev. BarBara Lynn

Harper (Zion AME) for her knee and upcoming sur-
gery in January Donna Matthews serious 6 hour
surgery; continued prayers for Ashley Day; Rev.
Hudson, cancer has returned; Carol Jean Schroer;
Lenora Wright; Lotz family 4lb 2oz baby boy; Seth
Keethler; Rachel White, seizures; police officers
and first responders; victims of random acts of vio-
lence; military personnel and their families; fami-
lies around the world that are in the midst of ten-
sions, conflicts, acts of violence and wars.
Joys
We can come together to Worship, question, pro-
test, and reconcile in peace; Scully family adopted
child; Lotz family baby boy; Carl and Helen 48
years of marriage! 66th wedding anniversary for
Emily and Louis Cohen!; First Baptist Church, May-
view, celebrates 175 years!; Molly Dorhauer is
wed! Congratulations to all!

feasted at Parish Life's Annual Fish Fry. We
had a full fellowship hall, with costumed chil-

Sin will have no dominio0n over you,
since you are not under law but under grace. Ro-
mans 6:14
Grace is most easily defined as unmerited
favor. God gives grace because Hes loving and
merciful, not because we deserve it. Its free. Ab-
solutely, positively free. Were saved by grace
alone.
The Roman Catholic Church couldnt sell
grace, and Luther knew this. Indulgences put an
unbearable law on Gods people. The Church said,
Do this and do that, buy this and buy that, and
God will give you grace when its time to be pun-
ished for your sins. Talk about pressure!
But God in His Word tells us that weve
got no shot of earning grace. And thats OK, be-
cause Jesus came to earth as walking, talking
grace. That fact shows us that we could never get
grace on our own.
How often do you try and earn Gods
grace through good deeds and hard work?

The sixteenth century was a time of sig-
nificant change. Science jumped far ahead during
this century. This was the century Copernicus
lived. Many believed the sun revolved around the
earth. Copernicus studied shadows and surveyed

the planets soon realized that the earth revolved
around the sun.
It was also a great century for artists.
Leonardo da Vinci was painting, sketching, and
inventing all sorts of things. Michelangelo
Buonarroti was carving beautiful sculptured out
of big slabs of marble. He also is famous for
painting on the ceiling and a wall of the Sistine
Chapel. Art historians say he created a master-
piece.
But Michelangelo said, Only God cre-
ates. The rest of us just copy. He also wrote
that grace cannot be purchased, during the
strife over indulgences.
The sixteenth century saw great changes
to daily life. Before this century many people
were serfs, working as peasants on the lands of
nobles. There were knights and nobles, monks
and nuns, priests and bishops, and serfs. But in
the sixteenth century there were builders and
merchants, ship captains and sailors, singers and
songwriters, and scientists and sculptors. And
there were Reformers.
The sixteenth century was the century of
the Reformation. The Reformation began on
October 31, 1517, when Martin Luther nailed
his Ninety-Five Theses to the church door at
Wittenberg. Over the years and decades of the
sixteenth century the Reformation spread all
over Europe. Sailing ships took the Reformation
all over the world. The Reformation spread
from Germany to Switzerland, from France to
Scotland, and to Spain. The Reformation even
made it all the way to the snowy mountains of
Siberia.

What You Need To Know
For as long as the earth has existed, the sun's rays
have provided warmth that gives us seasons,
weather patterns, and a predictable climate. Peri-
odically, the earth has warmed or cooled, but the
global warming patterns experienced in the last
250 years are the result of human activity directly
related to the burning of fossil fuels. Beginning
with the industrial revolution in the late 1700's,
coal and oil have provided the energy to build the
modern economy.
However, the side effects of burning fossil fuels
have proven to be more harmful than we ever
knew, because that process releases chemicals
into the air we breathe and into the upper atmos-
phere. Those chemicals like carbon dioxide act
like a blanket over the earth and prevent heat
from escaping in a normal way. As the activities
and energy consumption of an industrial civiliza-
tion have increased, trapped heat has risen to the
point where entire natural systems are changing.
The problems of climate change and global
warming are confirmed and well-documented by
the scientific community. Reputable scientific
organizations that reflect the consensus among
leading scientists about this urgent problem in-
clude:

National Academies of Science (NAS)
Stern Review on the Economics of Climate
Change
American Geophysical Union (AGU)
American Meteorological Society (AMS)

American Association for the Advancement of Sci-
ence (AAAS)
Before the industrial revolution, the historic level of car-
bon dioxide was roughly 275 parts per million. We are
currently raising that level at two parts per million annu-
ally to the level of approximately 390 parts per million
in 2010. Even if we changed our fossil-fuel based econ-
omy immediately, the affects of current global warming
will continue to heat the planet. In addition, there are
feedback loops that may accelerate global warming. For
instance, white ice reflects heat whereas darker ocean
absorbs heat; as some ice melts, more ocean is exposed
and the ice melts faster because the surrounding ocean is
warmer.
The fact is that our planet and the natural systems that
sustain life are changing due to global warming. With
hotter weather, we get more evaporation and more mois-
ture into the air. The consequence is that we have more
extreme weather events; when it rains, it is more likely
to flood. When a hurricane passes over warmer water, it
is more likely to strengthen. Normal rainfall patterns are
changing around the earth and humans and animals are
having to adjust their behavior, their reproductive pat-
terns, where they live, and their sources for food.
Why Is Global Warming An Issue Of Faith?
People of faith are beginning to realize that global
warming and climate change are issues of environmental
justice. For humans, those who are poor or unable to
adjust will be the first to feel the effects of a warming
planet; many will lose their homes to rising seas and be
unable to grow food for their families. The scientific
predictions are that as ice melts on Antarctica and
Greenland, sea levels will rise as much as four feet, thus
displacing millions of persons who live and work and
grow food near the coasts. Low-lying countries such as
Bangladesh will lose most fo their land mass, islands in
the Pacific will disappear, and coastal marshes such as
The Everglades in South Florida will be under sea wa-
ter. For plants and animals, global warming means that
many will not adjust in time and will become extinct,
thus reducing the diversity and beauty of God's natural
creation.
Developed countries such as the United States consume
a disproportionate amount of the earth's resources and
produce a disproportionate amount of carbon. In the
U.S., 5% of the world's population consumes 25% of the

earth's resources, thus contributing a dispropor-
tionate amount to global warming. It is an issue of
injustice between those who "have" and those who
"have not."
What Can You Do?
Calculate the carbon footprint of your family
and your congregation to determine a baseline
for energy savings.
Home: turn the thermostat down in winter and
up in summer, insulate, get only the appliances
you need and make them energy efficient, buy
a smaller home or rent a smaller apartment,
shade your windows, dry your clothes on the
line.
Transportation: ride a bike or walk more and
drive less, purchase fuel-efficient and smaller
vehicles, commute by public transportation,
limit flying.
Food: grow a garden for vegetables and herbs,
support your local farmers through a CSA,
limit packaging and waste, start a compost
pile.
Yard: plant native perennials rather than grass
to limit mowing, buy an electric mower if you
need to cut grass, recycle leaves and yard
waste, plant trees for shade and heat reduction,
start a worm farm, compost for soil enrich-
ment.
Education: explore websites and community
resources for more ways to save energy and cut
your carbon footprint, join our congregational
"Green Team" to plan for action.
Advocacy: write or call your elected officials at
every level to inform them that global warming is
an issue of faith and justice and that public policy
decisions to address global warming are essential.
