5. Old Tokaido Road

Kyoto
The Tokaido was Japan's first well policed road. It linked Tokyo with Kyoto in the Edo-era. Before the Tokaido, travel
a dangerous affair reserved for bandits and samurai. It's a road that greatly transformed Japan, making tourism and
commerce possible for all.
The Hakone Checkpoint of the old Tokaido road has been recreated including a prison and lookout tower. This is one o
Hakone's top tourist attractions. The more interesting attraction is the old Tokaido road itself.
Much of the old Tokaido is now modern spans of highway. Parts of the original stone path between Moto-Hakone and
Hatajuku have been well preserved. This section looks much as it did in the Edo-era. It's a pleasant 60 to 90 minute wa
through old cedar forests. The Hakone Checkpoint is a good starting point for this walk.

9. Hakone Tozan Railway

The Hakone Tozan Railway is Japan's oldest mountain railway. The section between Hakone-Yumoto to Gora follows a
narrow path through dense forests over many bridges and through old mountain tunnels. It's a good way to see the
mountains in the area.
The train is best in early July when hydrangea along the track bloom. The flowers are illuminated at night.
The Hakone Tozan Railway will also delight railway enthusiasts (known as densha otaku in Japan). It has unique little

11. Hiking

excellent hiking trails in the Hakone area.
The hike from Owakudani to Lake Ashinoko is perhaps the best. The trail passes the peak of Mount Kamiyama for a vi
