(often foll by of) 1 @ momentary or partial view (caught a glimpse oF). 2 tr. see tantly or partly Introduction Iheve been using Glimpse fer ebout four years, it came about by my strange obsession with laoking at objects, sards, card cacos, back designs, book covers ete etc and seeing how they can be covertly used. ciscovered | could hide a mukitude of sins within he design af 2 Bicycle card case, initially vies ia peek a cards index us| ike to use a good idea to its maximum potential so do not think for ane minute thet this can only ba usodi with cards. Glimpso is a kiler device that nas many applications. NOTE: Glimase will sake only 5 minutes to put together and once made will last a long time & will be someting you use. Inspiration for Glimpse nas come from some ofthe greats, Lavty Beckers Qut OF Body inspired by Laity Whites gaffed Aviator case as vell as Paul Harris's Angel Case from his video The Art Of Astanishment Making Glimpse Included are two Glimpse gimmicks to get you started one red and one blue depending on which colour deck you use. You will need sD aclustthe stra ght edges ca youreard ease 523 es every deck afters sight, you wil iso need te cellophane thet comes withthe Sock. will doserby the sorsttucton as you arousing tho enclosed g mck, obviously you can just use we Bleycle cases Bicycle Case Window - Some Bicycle cases are printed o'f centre or folded incorrectly try to use ones that are centralised. Using @ pencil draw a window on the card case. Fig 1 shows the exact position or the windaw. Place an old deck of cards inside the case to keop it rigid and using @ sharp erat knifo and a ruler cut out the wrdow taking your time so that you get a claan eu. [tis hattar to gradually cut through the cord than try to do it in one go just make sure you hold tho rulor firmly. When finished you should be lef: with Fig 2. Be precise you don't went flops thet interiere with the smooth sliding action, PLAYING CARDS Thumb Curve Tape Area Fig 1 Fig 2 Fig 3 The Cellophane Guide - Fig 3. shows how I have cut a thumb curve out, trust me this goes unnoticed by spectators even when they handle the case. | have had some very notable Magicians and Mentalists handle the case without detection, The curve enables ‘you to have a good surface area for your thump to retract the slide back and forth with no fumbles. | added the clear tape reinforcement around the tap saction, this was due to the fact that aftar so many parformances tha cellophane gct weak and tore. | put the cellophane on the case then rainforos the top section with tape (the shaded area in Fig 3.) then remove it to eut out the thumb curve. The only reason you will need to make ¢ new Glimpse case is if you crush the case to o'ten or the top exposed area gets dirty You can transfer the cellophane & slide from one case to enother. | should also point cut that with some cases you may find the slide catches on the window area, this ean be avoided by dcing precise clean cuts when cutting out the window. The Slide Gimmick - Now that th case windowis cut you will needtoftthe slide gimnick whichis oversizod on purpose as card boxes vary ever so slightly in size ard printing alignment, | recommend you practice with a scrap piece of cerd to get used to ‘rimming the slide so ifs per‘ectly. You want itto move freely but NOT be to loose that it wants to fall out the case is tuned upside down, Again I suggest using @ erat knife and trim a slthar at a time. Cnce you have done this ence or twice you'l be able to make ttiem in mirutes. | made one forall ofthe pres who kinely commented on Glimpse and eaeh was portectly made in abeut fivo minutos. Applications - Tho most basic application is to glimpse a card. Richard Ostelinds excellent breasthrough card system is perfect for this. For those who do not use a fll memorisad stack you should at leest know @ simple rotation stack ie Si Siebbins ot The Eight Kings. | will briefly doseribo tho Si Stobtins Stack, tie cards rotate in suits throughout the entire deck, Clubs, Hearts, Spaces, Diamonés. (Known as CHaSD) the value of each card increoses by 0 value of three: Acos = 1, Jacks = 11, Quoons = 12 & Kings » 13. Here is arun of cards in order: Ace of Clubs, ¢ of Hearts, 7 of Spades, 10 of Diamonds, King of Clubs, 9 of Hearts, 6 of Spades /9 of Diamones / Queen of Cubs ete. This continues tiroughout the entre Geck. In operation you bring out the deck bratty spreading them to show they are diferent. Be anvere that there i @ re4, black, red, black eeneition so avoid a long Iaok atthe spread. Clearly show a spectator how you would like thom to cutthe cards wien your backis turnad. Demonstrate tis fr them so no misunderstancings can happen. Leave the case on the table withthe Glimpse window loner most. Have them cut te deck and cemplate, ask them to remove the top card and place it into their breast pocket than take the second card and put it into their right trouser pocket, finaly tell hem co take the third card and place it in their back pocket. Have them then slda the deck FACE DOWN into the card case at which goint you tur around. | oftan say “Tho logical way to fine out what cards you have is to go thrcugh the deck anc see which cards are ‘missing.” at which point | have picked up the case. "Bur that would 90 easy and stillno: help me with where you have put tham. In fact ould you gut the deck in a free pocket?” As | gesture with the deck | glimpse, i's on the off beat and | have just esked them a question so for that second they are thinking of were they have a free pocket. I sliy te deck into whichever packet they have indicated and continue as folows. “Gan you remember which card isin yur breast pocket? If not take a peak.” At this moment | add three to the value of the card | Glimpsod and then move one along with the suit As an exemple it | Glimpsed the 3 of Clubs | know he has 6 of haaris in his breast ‘pocket, the cord that would follow this would be the $ of Spades which he hes in his right trouser ‘pockat and finally the Queen of Diarrords in his back pocket. “Fosus on the colour of the card in your top pockot... That's red isntit! A heart. mmm Not high or low, a six or a saven.. I go with the six of hearts!" The restis presentation. Don't pass this by even if you hats card effects in your metalism, it is so clean. Presented with conviction and with as much a hands off epproach as possible card rmentalism can destroy ary audience. | elwvays justify the use of cards by seying itis easior to use 52 cifforent pleying cards than find 52 citferent items. This routing gets some of the sirongest reactions, especially vihen the ack hes been apparentiy shuttled Drawing Duplication -| uso. business card and secratiy write the word 'NO’ In big bold letters tthe bottom of the card. then ask the spectetar “Yes or No, can you see whats written on this card?” ‘At which point they say “Not” | immediately say “Thats great!” as I win the card over Wo show the ‘word’NO' This gots a giggle but also subconsciously tells tem the card is opaque and uses up an area co the card. Ithen ask them 10 draw a simple image at hich point | draw a box inthe area | vrish them ‘0 use. | tum my back and once they have finished | slide the card into the card case in the carrect crientstion.Thisis done very easuelly as | continue to talk, | ask for a free pocket atwhich point | Glimpse. ESP - An ESP card is easily identifiable. The star has points, a cross has one line showing, @ circle is rounded, a square has a herd horizontal line & the three wavy lines will show as three (els, Larry Backor has a groatroutino using o¢d backed ESP cards which would work a treat with Glimpse, Check ‘out his book Stunners for an explanation of his routine, Again I must emphasise thatthe case is used as an after thought and obviously avoid aver use as the method will ha vary apparent to anyone. Another idee is to borrow various business cards ftom difforont poopie and than have one placed into your cerd ese at which point you glimpse and cen now divine what sort of business the person is thinking of Psychometry - have three spectators each secraily take out @ small object of same kind. a coin, a key, a ring, passport photo, credit card, business card atc. Not aniy will ou be able to predict whet each person put inside but who they belong to, This is easily done, begin by instructing your eudience to cet smallitoms, as each item s drappad int the case taka a Glimpse and remember what itis and who put it inside. In closo up anvironments I Glimpse as | siall around the able with the ezse collecting tho items. Emphasise the fact that your looking aivay as each object is placed inside. Another idea is to have each person place a diffarent coin inside, you can now divine who put which coin inside Wink Murder You begin by telking about the ald school game where one person was a detective who left the room whilst someone else was nominated as a murderer and would kill their victims with @ subtle wink. You explain that you will all play this game but no one will be murdered and the only forson who wil know vo cho murdero® is will 29 the murdarerthomaives. For scloction purposes five coins are borrowed four silver and one copper, whoever chooses the copper coin will be the murderer. All ve coins ere dropped into the card case anc mixec. Each person cisereely takes a ‘singlo coin out without looking et it and holds in their clenched fist. Once all the coins aro taken you instruct each person to take a peak at which coin they hold. You then ask each parson to imagine a person real or imagnary that they could kil, ater some delioration you dwine exactly who holds he copper cain ancl thus 1s the murderer. This is a killer excuse the pur, all you need to do is take a casual glimpse as each coin is taken es you move from person to person, | instruct each person not to look in the case as | do not want them to even know if they are the murderer. If the coins are all gathorad in tho caso ust give ita shoko to apparortly moc tho coins but im reality ycur just spotting the cappor coin, As on as tho copper coin is teken and | know who has it | immediately hand the case out for the final coins to be taxen which gives a real hands off aporezeh. You knaw who holds the copper ecin sae effets over for you. also dent worry about them sporting anything they never do! Mako sura the usa of the case is casual, look for scmething else initially to put the coins in and then as an afterthought spot the case on te table. Again dont over use the case, one effect maximum per group | sincerely hove you enjoy Glimpse and use it, nothing satisfies me more than having @ killer utility cevice right under their noses and even in their hands, Thanks musi go to Larry Becker and Larry White for their initial peek case and Paul Harris for making me look at Bicycle Card cases for way ta long, Mare Spelmann - London - 2004 i “2S armen Geren
