Thi s handbook pre sents the important configurations and functional

characteri s tic s of the pilot operational equipment provided by the
Crew Equipment and De s ign Branch for the Apollo and Skylab Programs .
The various operational camera systems and miscellaneous crew support
items are included . The des criptive information i s presented conci s e ly
and i llustrated appropriately .
1.0 Introduction
This handbook presents the various configurations and the
functional character istics of the pilot operational e quipment
provided by the Crew E quipment and Design Branch for the
Apollo and Skylab Programs . The operational c amera systems -
16 :mrn . s e quence , 35 rmn . and 70 rmn . still, and 5 -inch earth
terrain - compr i s e the maj or portion of the inc luded hardware
items . The remainder of the handbook covers the misce llaneous
crew support e qui pment - tape recorder system, binocular s ,
watches , pens and penc ils , tape , etc .
The significant configurations of each hardware item are
listed with the ir di stinguishing characteri stics and typical
uti li zati on. Further de tai led information conce rning con
figuration pecular ities and additions should be obtained from
the Crew Equipment and Des ign Branch .
The e quipment character i stics are provided in a conci s e
outline format for increased detail vi s ibi lity . Photographic
and graphical i llustrations are coordinated with the hardware
des criptions to furnish a full delineation of the characteri stics
and capab i litie s .

2.1 Data Acqui s ition Camera (DAC ) ( SEB33100100) :
The 16 mm . D ata Acqui sition Camera ( DAC ) i s used to obtain
sequential photographic data dur ing manned space flight
mis s ions . Unlike typical movie c aeras , this unit has
independent shutter speeds and framing r ates . Furthermore ,
the automatic frame rates are lower than the common cine
speeds to maximi ze fi lm usage while maintaining the des ired
engineering data value . The DAC can be handheld or bracket
mounted , can operate from spacecraft or portable battery
power , and can accept var ious lens es and assorted acces sor ie s
a s des cr ibed i n t he following sections of this handbook .

accessory connector.

For DAC control, the camera operation can be started and

stopped and the camera sequencing modes can be selected
as follows:

Configuration Sequencing Modes

-301 1, 6 , 12 , and 24 fps

-302 l, 6, 12, and 24 fps
-303 Time, l, 6, 12, and 24 fps
-305 Time, 2, 6' 12, and 24 fps

Remote mode selection is independent of camera mode

selector switch setting. The camera operating mode is

2 . 16-1
determined by which operate button is used to start the
sequencing. DAC automatic operation can be stopped by
depressing and releasing either operate button.

For Hasselblad camera control, only camera actuation can

be triggered with the cable button. Remote mode selector
setting has no effect in this case.

The cable configurations -301 and -302 incorporate an

indicator lamp under the operate button. This lamp
flashes at the selected sequencing rate. The lamp opera
tion capability requires some wiring modifications in the
DAC itself and eliminates the TIME mode.

The HDC freely accepts the 60 mm . , 8 0 mm . , and 100 mm .

Lenses ( see 4 . 3 , 4 . 4 , and 4 . 5 ) specially des igned to
compensate for the g las s res eau plate . The - 309 HDC is
us ed with a 500 mm . Lens ( see 4 . 12 ) adjusted for the glass
plate and lunar sur face operations .
The HDC accepts interchangeab le film magazines ( see 4 . 2)
containing 70 mm . film . The camera provides the locking
mechanism for pos itive attachment and the drive force for
film advancement . The glas s plate of the HDC pre s se s the
film against the magazine pres sure platen thereby determin

The motor dr ive of the HDC provide s automat ic recocking of
the lens shutter and film advancement after each exposure .
The exposure is initiated by depres s ing the operate button
on the camera front . Releas ing the operate button activate s
the camera motor which automatically stops at the comple

duration ) .
The HDC shutter release solenoid and drive motor are
powered by two s e lf-contained , r eplaceab le , Ni-Cd batter ies
( s ee 4 . 6 ) with a capac ity sufficient for approximate ly
3 , 000 camera cyc le s . The camera may be operated with only
one battery for approximately 1 , 500 camera cycle s .
The HDC e lectr ical cir cuit normally is fused with a

The use ful film capacity of the magazine varies with film
type and with the amount of preflight s ensitometry . With
standard base films ( L mil , 102 -tm) such as Kodak 2485 and
IIaO , approximate ly 110 frame s are avai lab le . Thin base
films ( 2 . 5 mil , 64 -tm) provide between 160 and 170 frames
depending on whether the emuls ion i s color ( S 0168 , S0368 )

A r ed/white signal , vis ib le on the lower right s ide ,
monitors film advancement . A red s ignal indicates incom

the s ignal i s red . During normal operat ion , the s ignal
will change from white to r ed to white as the film is

the fi lm .
A metal darks lide i s included t o protect the film whenever
the magazine is not installed on the camera .
When the magazine is to be installed on an HDC ( see 4 . 1 )
( camera with glass reseau plate ) ( primari ly -217 and -301
magazines ) , the darks lide must be removed pr ior to instal

pos s ib le after r emoval from the camera to reduce light
exposure of the film .
C onvers e ly , the darks lide must b e inserted fully for
installation on an HEC ( see 4 . 9 ) ( nonreseau camera )
( primari ly -215 magazine ) . Once the magazine is installed ,
the darks lide must be removed before the required photography .
Camera operation wi ll be prohibited if the darks lide i s
ins erted more than halfway . The darks lide must be inserted
fully for magazine removal from an HEC .
The -217 configuration incorporates a tether ring ass embly
on the magazine rear . The tether ring can be unstowed and
stowed by the suited creman on the lunar surface . This
magazine ( -2 17) also is coated with thermal control aluminum
paint to moderate the temperature extreme s of lunar surface
operations .
The film magazine is qualified for us e in the Apollo and
