Diabetes is a progressive disease

The disease gradually progresses in its severity and leads to severe complications if left untreated or uncontrolled

The aim of treatng Diabetes is to maintain blood sugars in healthy range and prevent its effects and complications
Diabetes is treated with
Diet and Life Style Modification
Exercise
Medications
Oral & Insulin
Patient Education and Self management

Since Diabetes is a life time disorder, patients must get educated about the disease and learn self management interventions
Patient Education is a key component of Diabetes treatment

This Basic Education Session will explain

What are the key indicators of Disese Control Status
What are the Disease Complications & Target Organs
Frequency of tests and compliance as a part of self management

The Disease Control Status

The disease control status can be identified through checking the blood sugar levels frequently
Fasting and Post lunch sugars though are very reliable indicators
They do not reveal the disease control status over a specific period of time
The key test to identify whether the disease is in control or not is HbA1c which gives an average blood sugar range for the last 3
HbA1c is measured in % and the ideal level for diabetics is a reading of 7 % or less
The test should be perfromed every 3 months or atleast every 6 months to assess the disease control status

HbA1c readings consistantly over 7% indicate that the disease is not under control and requires modification in treatment meth

High HbA1c indicates uncontrolled disease and will effect multiple organs in the body called as target organs
The target organs are
Kidneys
Eyes - Retina
Heart & Vascular
&
Feet

The disease complications are result of

Disease Duration
& Disease Controlled Status
Poor disease control will lead to early complications
The complications of Kidneys are called as Diabetic Nephropathy , where the kidneys will gradually lose the natural power of fi
and results in a condition called Chronic Kidney Disease
Patients need to be on Dialysis to manage this condition

The Complications of Eye are called as Diabetic Retinopathy

This condition may result in Gradual or Sudden loss of vision
Diabetic Retinopathy is treated with Eye Lasers or Injections given inside the eye ball called Intra vitreal injections

Heart and Vasular complications are called as macrovascular complications of Diabetes &
These complications may result in Heart attack and Stroke (Paralysis)

and The complications effecting nerves is called Diabetic Neuropathy which effects peripheral nerves
Peripheral neuropathy will result in loss of sensation over legs and extremeties
which may lead to unhealing wounds and finally limb amputations

Each of the Organ is screened with some specialised tests to identify early complications

These complications can be prevented by strict control of blood sugars measured thorugh periodic HbA1c &
Periodic Screenings of organs to identify early complications and prevent further damage

Every year approximately

About 75 % of Diabetics Die from Heart diseases , Diabetics carry 4 times higher risk than normal individuals in developing card
About 40 % of Diabetics are identified with Chronic Kidney Disease
About 22% of Diabetics suffer with eye problems leading to blindness
About 27 % of patient have peripheral neuropathy , leading to limb amputations
Obesity ,Blood Pressure , Dyslipidemia , Smoking and Alcohol consumption will increase the risk of developing complications fu

Diabetic Associations recommend the following periodicity for screening the target organs and monitoring HbA1c for a healthy
HbA1c - Every 3 months , or at least every 6 months
Kidneys - Every 6 months
Heart & Vascular - Every 6 months
Eyes - Every 6 months
Feet - Every year
