ABSTRACT
Background: Each year the number of elder people continuously grows, which is
the reasonable consequence of successful national growth in health sector. As an
individual grows old, his/her physical functions are deteriorating. This will be
resulting in decreasing physical activity on a regular basis. Hence, problems
related to quality of life may be aroused and challenge the well being of elderly.
Aim: To find the relation between physical activity and quality of life in elderly in
Margoagung Village, Seyegan District, Sleman, Yogyakarta.
Methods: This was a non-experimental study with cross-sectional approach
conducted in June 2014. Seventy six respondents were included as sample. Data
was analyzed using Spearman rho and Chi square tests with significance rate of
95%.
Results: This study found a significant relation between physical activity and
quality of life in elderly, also significant differences in domains, such as Role
limitation due to physical health problems (p=0.009; p=0.01), Bodily pain
(p=0.017; p=0.019), Vitality (p=0.001; p=0.001), and Role limitation due to
emotional problems (p=0.021; p=0.023).
Conclusion: Physical activity is essential to be done by elder people as a part of
daily living because it can improve their physical, psychological, as well as social
health. However, before an individual strives to achieve a certain level of physical
activity (whether it is mild, moderate, or vigorous) he/she is strongly advised to
take extra precautions and seek medical advice for recommended frequency,
intensity, and duration of physical activity. Thus, quality of life of elderly can be
optimally enhanced.
