Grade 2
Overview:
Students will learn about the nature of liquids and the interactions of liquids with
other materials. They will explore liquids by examining droplets, by watching liquids
trickle down slopes, by investigating flow rates and by observing liquid interactions with
a variety of materials. They will learn that some materials are repel liquids, while others
are absorbent. They will understand that some liquids mix, while others do not. They will
observe that liquid water can be changed to ice or to steam, and back again, if heated
and cooled, and that wet materials dry out when left open to the air (water cycle).
Through this topic, students learn that water is our most important liquid, that we use
Desired outcomes:
- Describe some properties of water and other liquids, and recognize the importance of
water to living and nonliving things.
- Describe the interaction of water with different materials, and apply that knowledge to
practical problems of drying, liquid absorption and liquid containment.
Teaching Practices:
The one approach I took highly into consideration when I was developing this unit
plan was David Kolb's Experiential Learning Model (ELM). In his theory he talks about
hands on learning. With this unit plan being an Early Childhood unit plan, I thought that
it was imperative to keep young minds busy and occupied with hands on activities. For
me the best way to accomplish this was with most of the learning happening through
exploration. Individual lessons will try to focus around the students changing, exploring,
manipulating and using problem solving skills to come to their own understanding of the
outcomes. I realize that in a classroom setting this would be a very difficult task to pull
together and show the students growth. The best way I could come up with to show
majority of the students growth was through student reflection and recording
will have the opportunity to express their understanding and own train of thought. All
students express and show understandings in different ways. I hope that by providing
them the opportunities to show their growth in this way, it will allow them multiple ways
teacher. Other ways that I will be able to monitor my students growth is through
observations. As the students are exploring and learning, observations will help me
gather information about childrens progress towards meeting curriculum goals. Asking
questions and having discussions with the students will play a huge part in gathering the
