INT5200
Single Chip PowerPacket Transceiver

Features Benefits
Single-chip power line The INT5200 integrated power line
networking transceiver with MAC/PHY Transceiver is the
integrated MII, Ethernet and worlds first complete HomePlug 1.0
USB interfaces solution on a chip. In addition to the
HomePlug 1.0 Baseband MAC/PHY
Integrated 10-bit ADC, core, the INT5200 integrates all
10-bit DAC, AGC, filters and external analog components,
power amplifier including ADC, DAC, AGC, filters
Single-supplier solution for and the power amplifier. It removes the need for an external
power line MAC/PHY and Analog Front End and reduces the systems bill of materials even
AFE further, also improving performance. The INT5200 directly
interfaces with the AC coupling transformer in the power supply.
Implements Atheros patented
PowerPacket technology It also provides three types of host interface for maximum system
flexibility:
HomePlug 1.0 compliant
A USB1.1 device interface for connection to a USB host
General purpose 8-wire serial An MII PHY (IEEE 802.3u) / GPSI interface for
PHY data interface interconnection to microcontrollers or Ethernet controllers
Selectable MDI/SPI PHY An MII Host / DTE interface (IEEE 802.3u) for direct
management interface connection to an Ethernet PHY
Up to 14 Mbps data rate on This ultimate level of integration makes the INT5200 ideal for all
the power line cost sensitive embedded HomePlug applications such as desktop
computers and media receivers.
Low power consumption
The INT5200 implements patented PowerPacket OFDM
Orthogonal Frequency technology, which forms the basis for the HomePlug 1.0.1
Division Multiplexing (OFDM) Specification. Specifically tailored to reliably deliver up to 14 Mbps
with patented signal over the difficult power line communication environment, the IC
processing techniques for combats deep attenuation notches, noise sources, and multi-path
high data reliability in noisy fading by allocating usable frequencies according to the signal-to-
media conditions noise ratio (SNR). Synchronization is achieved in low SNR
Intelligent channel adaptation channels without the use of pilot carriers.
maximizes throughput under The MAC implements a CSMA/CA scheme with prioritization and
harsh channel conditions automatic repeat request (ARQ) for reliable delivery of Ethernet
packets via packet encapsulation. Built-in Quality of Service (QoS)
features provide the necessary bandwidth for multimedia payloads
including voice, data, audio, and video. A four-level prioritized
random access method exists with strict adherence to priority.
Segment bursting on the power line minimizes the demands on
the receiver resources and maximizes the throughput of the
network while still providing excellent latency response and jitter
performance. The ICs contention-free access capability extends
this concept of segment bursting to allow the transmission of
multiple frames over the power line without relinquishing the
control of the medium. Utilizing contention-free access, a single
station may act as a controller for the entire network.
