Homework 6

Homework assigned on September 28th 2017

Due on October 10th 2017

1 (25 %) The reaction:

A B C (1)

is carried out adiabatically in a constant volume (batch reactor). The reactants A and B
are introduced at a temperature of 100C and initial concentrations of 0.1 and 0.125
mol/dm3, respectively. The rate equation is given by:

(2)
Plot the temperature and the concentrations of species as a function of time.

Additional information:

2 (30 %) The nitration of aromatic compounds is a highly exothermic reaction that

generally uses catalysts that tend to be corrosive (e.g., HNO3/H2SO4). A less corrosive
reaction employs N2O5 as the nitrating agent as illustrated below:

(3)

The reaction rate is first order in A and second order in B. VCSTR = 850 L
a (10 %) Write an expression for the heat removal term R(T) and generated term G(T)
as a function of only temperature and numerical values.

b (15 %) Find the steady state temperatures and conversions. Which steady states are
stable and which unstable? [For 285 < T0 < 375 K].

c (5 %) Determine the ignition and extinction temperature.

3 (45 %) The liquid-phase reaction A B is to be carried out in a tubular reactor

operating at a constant pressure of 202.6 kPa. The feed rate is 600 kmol/ks of pure A
with an inlet temperature of 200 C. Pure A has a specific volume of 0.056 m3/kmol.
The heat of reaction at 200 C is 15 kJ/mol. The molar specific heats of A and B are
both 42 J/(molK). The reaction rate constant near this temperature can be approximated
by

(4)

for k in ks1 and T in C. Although it would be desirable to run the reactor adiabatically,
the maximum reaction temperature allowable is 400 C. Above this temperature
undesirable byproducts are formed.

a (30 %) Calculate the minimum reactor volume required to obtain 80% conversion of
A.

b (15 %) What must the heat transfer rate be in the cooled section of the reactor?
