The Nine Events of Instruction
In Facilitate Learning Session (FLS)

1. Gain Attention
The first important step in the learning instruction is to stimulate the
students attention and interest with uniqueness. Asking questions towards the
students or allowing them share thoughts they have could also inspire them to
participate in the content delivery.
In every start of the meeting or session of any competency, the trainer should
gather the trainees and conduct an orientation in order to motivate trainees and
achieve the learning outcomes expected from them.

2. Inform Learner Objectives

Learners or trainees should be informed with the objectives of the
competency training. They should be aware with the learning outcomes they should
be able to perform at the end of the training.
Since trainees have taken different competency and tasks, the Competency
Based Learning Material (CBLM) should have objectives, Learning objectives for
information sheets and performance objectives for the activities that need practice
or skill. Moreover, trainees should be reminded on the overall objective or goals of
the training and also the objectives of the day to day activities.

3. Stimulate Recall of Prior Learning

Trainees learn and store new information better if concepts and ideas are
relevant to what they already learned and experienced. Also, learning would
become significant to them.
The trainer/facilitator should establish the interconnection of the skills
previously learned to the skills to be practiced and the significance of a task to the
heavier task that needs to be polished. Association of the competency to the overall
qualification must be highlighted in order to encourage the trainees to learn the all
concepts and skills of the qualification.
4. Present Stimulus Material
In the Learning process, content must be introduced to the trainees. In order
to make it easier for the trainees to grasp and understand the information, it is
desirable to organize the content into pieces and employ varied teaching styles that
would suit to their individual differences or their different learning styles. With the
use of real-life situations as an example would enable the trainees to recall the
information being taught to them efficiently because they can apply and exercise it
to their own life experiences and internalize the content.

5. Provide Learner Guidance

In providing guidance to the learner, there should be communication
between the trainer and the trainee. This is essential to enable the trainee be on
track and for the trainer to monitor the progress of the trainee.
Various teaching methodologies is employed by the trainer to meet the
different learning styles of the trainee. Also, it is important to provide opportunity
to the trainees to actually see how skills are done thru actual demonstration,
advanced students and even visual presentation in the acquisition of skills.

6. Elicit Performance
Knowledge based and skills based are categorized in the content of the
session plan. Contents categorized as knowledge based is practiced through self-
check or face to face questioning or depending on the method used. For the modular
self-paced method, there are self-checks provided every after the information sheet
to provide immediate application or practice.
For the skills that need to be practiced are presented in the Competency
Based Learning Materials (CBLM), task sheets are given for the single tasks,
operation sheet for operation of equipment, and Job sheets for the combination of
task and operations required in performing a Job which requires to generate an
output or service.
7. Provide Feedback
Providing feedback from time to time to the trainees is very essential to
them. because if there are misconception in the delivery of instruction or there are
ideas or concept the trainees have not yet grasped, giving feedback is one of the
good avenue to clarify their misconceptions and to give more knowledge and
information to them.
In CBT, trainer provides feedback for the practice of knowledge thru self-
check answer keys. Asking the trainees to check their own answers against the self-
check answer key is an example of self-paced learning.
Trainers have the performance criteria checklist which is a list of required
standards for judging both performance and output. In the application or practice of
skills, trainees should check against standards whether he is doing the required skill
or not. Trainers are expected to instruct the trainees to always check the criteria
while they are practicing. Also, to remind them that whenever they are done doing
the required skill, they should carefully review their work. At this point also, you can
provide additional feedback.

8. Assess Performance
Assessment must be the very important step in the teaching-learning
process. Written test, performance test and interview are the methods in assessing
the trainees in every competency as per recommended in Competency Based
Training (CBT). There are four dimensions of competency that should be covered
during assessment which are task skills, task management skills, job role and
environment and contingency management skills.

9. Enhance Retention and Transfer

Learning should not stop with the institutional competency evaluation or in
the day of competency assessment. Integration of Knowledge from other
competencies to skills in the other competencies of qualification should be provided
to enhance retention and transfer.
Providing On-the Job Training or supervised industry training is a good and
important avenue in the application and practice of the knowledge and skills
acquired.
