The Route is an invitation to visit the different stages of the life in Santiago
between the 19th and 20th centuries. During this period, the city, founded
by Pedro de Valdivia in 1541 at Cerro Huelén (nowadays, called Cerro Santa
Lucía), has been extended by the consolidation of aristocratic and residential
neighbourhoods, religious vocation and places where artists, intellectuals
and bohemians meet. Through time, these neighbourhoods have
experienced changes due to population flows, but still preserving in its
buildings, streets and corner the charm of a past that mixes with the dynamic
of a city, which writes over these tracks, its new stories, which gives new life
to these spaces of Gran Santiago.
The patrimonial value of this Route comes from the concrete and the ethereal
compounds. The Route goes through Traditional Zones (TZ) which is a class
of patrimonial protection. The Traditional Zones are formed by buildings
of special architecture, which are representative of the culture and history
of these areas and its inhabitants. During the visit, you will see buildings
which are national monuments, designed by prestigious architects of the
19th and 20th centuries.
