A message from the

President ofthe Royal Society

As we look forward to the future of scientific publishing

the Royal Society continues to promote science to a
wide readership and publish research of the highest
quality. The Societys international scope and reputation
ensure that it continues to publish work that is at the
cutting edge as the world becomes increasing reliant
onscience and technology.

This catalogue contains details of the Royal Societys

periodicals and journal packages. Our interdisciplinary
journals have become important resources for scientific
centres around the globe, communicating ground-
breaking scientific discovery across the life and physical
sciences, and also recently in the cross-disciplinary
research emerging at the boundary between these
twodisciplines.

On page 40 you will find details of the Royal Society

journal collection: Science in the making, which
will be a major resource for historians of science,
scientists and science enthusiasts in the years to come
and help librarians and institutions to complete their
archivecollection.

About the Royal Society

The Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship of

many of the worlds most distinguished scientists drawn
from all areas of science, engineering, and medicine.
The Societys fundamental purpose, reflected in its
founding Charters of the 1660s, is to recognise, promote,
and support excellence in science and to encourage
the development and use of science for the benefit
ofhumanity.

Current Fellows include Jocelyn Bell Burnell, Richard

Dawkins, Stephen Hawking, Tim Berners-Lee and
JohnSulston. There are currently 25 Nobel Prize winners
among the Fellows and many other holders of equally
prestigious awards. Previous Fellows include Isaac
Newton, Christopher Wren, Charles Darwin, Ernest
Rutherford and Dorothy Hodgkin.

Royal Society publishing is home to the worlds longest

running scientific journal. The first issue of Philosophical
Transactions was published by the Secretary of the
RoyalSociety, Henry Oldenburg, in 1665. The journal
would become a key means of establishing scientific
priority, and its editorial processes would lay the
groundwork for the modern practice of peer review.

How we set 2018 prices with our

transparentpricing mechanism

In 2012, we introduced a transparent pricing mechanism that accounts

for the impact of Open Access (OA) content and its author pays
revenue. This ensures that we are not paid both a subscription and
an article publication charge (APC) fee for the same article. If the
percentage of non-OA articles drops so will the price.

irst we estimated cost inflation based upon the Retail Price Index (RPI)
F
at 2.6 percent. Then we took account of the recent percentage change
in non-OA articles published.

For 2018 prices, we did this by looking at two rolling three-year

periods, which were 2013 2015 and 2014 2016. We excluded
paid OA articles in our calculations and also any one-off rises in
content to clear a backlog as these are temporary changes. Here
a cap of +/- 20 percent protects the subscription prices from
fluctuating too suddenly. There were no other economic factors to
take into account.

Full transparency, pricing information and all figures can befound at

A unique compilation of memoirs celebrating the lives and

scientific achievements of Fellows of the Royal Society.

Each volume of Biographical Memoirs contains a carefully

researched and creatively written set of memoirs, which
portray both the human and professional sides of scientific
success and accomplishment. Often they are written by
a close colleague or research collaborator but with a
contribution from the family, and give insights into the lives
of these eminent mathematical, physical, biological and
medical scientists and engineers.

In 2018 this fascinating collection will increase to two

volumes and will include around 40 memoirs.

Notable published memoirs include Nobel Laureates Paul

Dirac and Martin Ryle which appeared in volume 32, and,
more recently, Margaret Gowing and Arthur Kornberg
(Nobel Laureate) in volume 58 and Francis Crick in the
2017 volume (volume 63). Biographical Memoirs is a must
