The soybean is currently one of the most important agricultural foods in

the world.A Its importance in grain production is increasing, because of its high
yield capacity and lower harvest costs in comparison with other grains. The
soybean produces more protein per hectare than any other crop. Its high quality
as a source of calories, makes it the basic food in the fight against hunger, and it
is found in many densely populated and underdeveloped areas. B

The use of sliding bed dryers for the drying of seeds is recommended due
to the low investment required and to the energy saving provided by their
utilization, as compared with other types of dryers. D In respect to the seeds,
their use causes less mechanical damage than other types of dryers. Sliding bed
dryers are characterized in accordance with the relative directions of seed flow
and air flow.
Crossflow dryers allow the use of low-powered blowers as a consequence
of the smaller pressure drop in the air flow. On the other hand, the operation of
concurrent and countercurrent dryers demands less electrical energy and the
dried product is more homogeneous. Recently, Barrozo (1995) presented a
detailed analysis of heat and mass transfer in a crossflow sliding bed dryer.

This work presents the results of the computational simulation of the

concurrent and the countercurrent drying of soybean seeds using a transport
phenomena model applied to the fluid and the solid phases (Brooker et al., 1974
; Barrozo.1995) .CThe drying kinetics and the equilibrium desorption data used
were obtained by Barrozo (1995) from specific studies.

The simulated temperature profiles for seeds and air present a jump when
the seeds have traveled approximately one-tenth of the total height from the
Inlet; which is an indication of the significant heat transfer in this region. All
simulated results obtained are consistent with the expected physical behavior of
this equipment, and can be useful in later experiments.
