FROM THE COLLEGE PRINCIPAL

By the time this newsletter is printed Year 12, 2017 will have completed their
HSC exams. Robert Keys, the Presiding Officer, congratulated our students
on their behaviour at the exams. I know for many students it will be a time NEXT MEETING
of great relief and they will now nervously await their results. FRIENDS OF
WYNDHAM
A reminder to the Class of 2017 regarding the morning tea after receiving COLLEGE
HSC results at the College. We will love to hear what results you received,
what you are going to do in 2018 and just a general catch up. All Parents are invited
to attend
Year 12 Formal this year is at Rosehill Racecourse. Many thanks to
Brendan Hewitt, Daljit Bansal and Fiona Prott for organising this event. 6.15PM TUESDAY
It will be a great night. 7 NOVEMBER 2017
IN THE LIBRARY
Staffing / Curriculum 2018 Our current Year 11 students have now moved
to the HSC course. On Thursday 12 October we held a very successful An information session
Conference Day. Many thanks to Classa Martinuzzi, Dallas Richmond, on HSC Assessment
David Ryan and Nathan Hulands and their team for organising the day. Followed by
A focus of the Conference was to highlight to students the importance of
assessment and attendance at school, to ensure they meet the requirements FRIENDS OF WYNDHAM
of the 2018 HSC AT 7PM

Next year we will have significant changes in our staffing, with several of our staff either retiring or on
leave. Most of our new staff will come from advertised positions. We welcome these staff members to
Wyndham.
Wyndham College SEPTEMBER 2017

Congratulations I am able to report success by our students studying with WSU College. They were:
Isabella Ahmad, Alicia Bang, Marcus Belcastro, Holly Bramble, Jayden Cavanagh, Kira Connelly, Rola
Elayan, Tiarna Foster, Tamasha Jayawardena, Neridah Mcrae, Lidya Rivai, Daisy Scott, David Woodward.

Students who have achieved a distinction or high distinction will be offered a scholarship by WSU.
These results ensure our students receive a priority offer and a $20,000 scholarship should they choose to
study at Western Sydney University. Congratulations and good luck to them all.
Many thanks to Natasha Craig the school coordinator of the program for her coordination and guidance
she offers these students. Again thanks to the support provided by WSU.
We are extremely proud of all students and look forward to many more success and recognition stories.

Congratulations to all our students and the staff who have given so much time to our students.

Library Agreement a reminder to all, that we have re-signed an agreement with the Nirimba Education
Precinct TAFE/UWS library that enables our students to not only use the library for research but to have
borrowing rights. This gives a significant advantage to our students as the library has a wonderful
collection which complements our own Wyndham/St John Paul II library resource.

Students interested in accessing this facility should see our own librarians to complete the necessary
documentation.

Uniform I would ask that we pay some attention again to uniform. It appears to me that a small number
of students have fallen into bad habits. I ask that all students ensure that they are in uniform each day and
that in the rare event where there is a mishap and it is not possible to be in full uniform, that a note from
home be provided. Finance should never be an excuse as we have a Student Assistance Scheme which can
be accessed via the office and is confidential. If students need uniform, new uniform shop is opened
Tuesday morning 7.30 -10.30am and Thursday afternoon 1pm - 4pm.

Leaving School Grounds a reminder to all that students are not permitted to leave the school grounds if
they do not have a timetabled lesson. Students are to utilise this time in the library, focusing on school
work. If students need to leave they must have a signed note from parent/caregiver and this note needs to
be signed by one of the Deputies. I seek your support and cooperation in this matter.

Year 11, 2018 On Tuesday November 21 we will welcome the year 11 cohort for 2018. There will be a
parent meeting for these students at 6pm in the hall on Tuesday 21 November. Thank you to Sue Beamer,
Beth OConnor and David Macleod-Jones and their team for organising this important event. Many of
these students come from a very small cohort to a substantially larger cohort and some can find this
transition challenging. We are focusing in on improving this process for our students.
For our current Year 11 students (now HSC) the upcoming Christmas holidays needs to be a time for
consolidating major projects, IRPs, PIPs etc. When they return in 2018, they have only 3 terms of formal
schooling remaining and I encourage all students to utilise this time wisely. I bring to the attention of all
parents a website called School A to Z, a practical help guide for parents. It can be found at
www.schoolatoz.nsw.edu.au. There is a particularly useful section on how to help the whole family survive
the challenges of Year 12. This may be particularly useful for Year 12, 2018 and their families.

FROM THE YEAR 12 DEPUTY

At the time of writing, we are in the third week of HSC examinations. Many of our students have already
finished their exams, while some only have one or two to go. It seems amazing that their time at
Wyndham has gone so quickly. The Presiding Officer and his team have been very complimentary about
our students and the way they have conducted themselves during this period. We are all certainly very
proud of them. Crunch time comes when results are released on December 14th. I wish them all the very
best.

SRE Seminar:
On Friday 1st December, in Session 2, there will be an SRE seminar with a Christmas theme. Speakers from
Life Anglican Church at Quakers Hill will explore the history of the festive season and how we celebrate it
today. The seminar will be held during Session 2 in the Hall for all students. All students are to be in
attendance unless a note is brought from home outlining reasons for non-attendance.

David Macleod-Jones Deputy Principal

FROM THE YEAR 11 DEPUTY

Year 12 has begun

As in most schools Wyndham College has commenced Higher School Certificate courses. This means that
HSC assessment tasks will begin this term and you are expected to complete them. Students are
reminded that all Year 12 Assessment tasks will form part of the students HSC mark the school
assessments form 50% and the HSC examinations make up the other 50% of their final HSC mark.

Attendance is an important part of completion for your HSC. Already there are a significant number of
students whose attendance has fallen away. All students are expected to be in every one of their
timetabled classes, on time and learning. Unnecessary absences and truancy are placing students into
dangerous territory and unexplained absences will be considered as evidence of someone being a non-
serious student whose continuation at Wyndham may be questioned.

Car Parking
Many students will be receiving driving licences over the Christmas break so parking will again become an
issue. All students who drive to school must register their cars, using a form available from the front
office. You are allowed to use the north end of front car park and the new student car park. Please be
aware that the first bay is reserved for Wyndham staff, the second for John Paul II staff and both
Wyndham and John Paul II students can use the two most northerly bays on a first in, first served basis.
Do not park in staff reserved areas nor the parking spaces reserved for the Tradewynds Cafe.

Uniform Is Santa bringing you black shoes for Christmas?

Thank you for keeping up the standard. Some of you are slipping, particularly in the area of footwear. Our
uniform code states that black leather shoes are the uniform, so if you are buying new shoes or placing an
order with Santa, remember black leather shoes! Foot safety is a WHS issue therefore you can expect
restricted entry into science and other practical subject areas.

Also, many of you have heard that Stage 2 of our new uniform is commencing in 2018. Year 12 will not be
expected to purchase the new uniform as this is being introduced for Year 11. The uniform for Year 12 will
continue to be the black business pants or black school shorts, the white school shirt and Wyndham

College jackets or jumpers. Please note that students are not to come to school in track pants or leggings.
Students continually in inappropriate clothing, that is, clothing that is not the official Wyndham College
uniform, will be sent home to change and/or issued with a Formal Caution of suspension.

Completing your financial responsibilities

If you took subjects that had a cost attached to them you would have done so knowing what the costs
were. Materials have been purchased for you and paid for on your behalf, now its your turn. Please
complete your obligations very soon.

Classa Martinuzzi- Deputy Principal

FROM THE COLLEGIATE DEPUTY

The second semester in the Collegiate has been a busy and exciting time for students and staff. I only
have space for some of the best highlights:
Student Programs:
Last steps towards Senior School for Year 10
Year 10 students in the Collegiate will soon receive a letter confirming the
courses they are enrolled into for 2018. Students who will be studying the
higher levels of Maths and English have received an invitation to attend
Preparation Days at Wyndham College on November 10th and 16th
respectively. All students from the Year 11 Class of 2018 have been invited
to attend an Orientation Day on Tuesday 21st November, and parents are
invited for an Orientation evening at 6 to 6.30pm in the Hall. On this
afternoon, the new uniform shop will be open from 4.30-6pm and 6.30-
8.30pm with a fitting room at Tradewynds for the new uniform. Some
items of the uniform will be available for purchase and orders will be able
to be made for all items of uniform for delivery in early December.

Year 9 students start their journey towards Senior study

Year 9 students from the Collegiate partner schools have been invited to visit Wyndham College for 2
days (RHS & SHHS 27th & 28th November/ QHHS 4th & 5th Dec) to find out more about the array of courses
that Wyndham College offers for Stage 6 in 2019.

Nirimba Education Precinct Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Student Conference
Indigenous students in Years 9 & 10 from the Nirimba Collegiate and
St John Paul II Catholic College were provided with a day of
networking and information about educational opportunities
available from WSU: The College and Nirimba TAFE. In addition the
Defence Forces and NSW Police offered seminars in the recruitment
programs they offer for students from Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander backgrounds. The keynote speaker for the Conference was
Clarke Webb who has worked to steer the recent
legislation that will give rise to a new institution
for the teaching of Aboriginal languages. Clarke spoke passionately and personally
about the significance of learning about and valuing Aboriginal languages and the
power that this has to enliven and promote cultural knowledge and pride a truly
inspiring talk! Read about Clark Webbs work here

Professional Development for Staff in the Collegiate

English teachers across the Collegiate are gathering on November 1 for a corporate marking operation of
the Common English paper that Year 10 students have just completed as the final part of their
assessment for their RoSA. The replicates a HSC marking experience for staff who havent had the
opportunity to experience this type of professional development, and affords an opportunity to network
and plan elements of curriculum across the Collegiate.

STEMposium 2 has been organised by David Pawley (Collegiate STEM

Coordinator) to take place on the afternoon of November 15th where guest
speaker Michael Beilharz from Knox Grammar School will inspire us with the
work that he has done in STEM cross-KLA assessment around the concept of
a Mars Colonisation Project. Following this, teachers from the Collegiate
partner schools will present and celebrate their achievements and projects in
the area of STEM learning.

The Wyndham College Technological and Applied Studies (Industrial Arts / Home
Economics) Faculty are hosting a professional sharing day on November 22 to
develop staff knowledge and skills in design software, 3D Printing and use of the laser
cutter in addition to showcasing the HSC works and folios of 2017.

Sign off
Id like to take this opportunity to thank the staff across the Collegiate Schools who have assisted in
providing opportunities for students and staff across the Nirimba Collegiate to grow throughout 2017. It
has been my privilege to drive Collegiate programs in the role of CDP this year. In so doing, I have worked
alongside some remarkable educators whose dedication to enhancing the opportunities for students
means the commitment of many extra hours in addition to their timetabled classes and normal school
responsibilities, and it is upon the goodwill of these staff that the success of these Collegiate initiatives
rest. Particular thanks to Karen, Classa and David who have rendered the most significant, tolerant, and
enduring support to me in my time relieving in this role. - Beth OConnor

Australian Mathematics Competition for the Westpac Awards 2017

The 2017 Australian Maths Competition was held on Thursday 27th July. It is an
internationally acclaimed competition with students from more than 30 countries
participating. Students are asked to solve 30 problems in 75 minutes. The problems are
designed to test mathematical thinking without a calculator and the questions get more
difficult so by the end they are challenging the most gifted students.

This year Wozaila Arefin was awarded a Credit certificate and Jayden Cavanagh
received a Proficiency certificate.

Congratulations to all our students for accepting the challenge of entering this
