SLIDE PRESENTATION ATTACHED

CONNIE WOLF Q & A:

What is the connection between art and your own life? What influence has art had on
your own life in terms of business, family, community?

Is the thrill still there for you? How do you view the changing art market and its
impact on collecting? What are you collecting now?

What advice would you give to new collectors?

o PASSION
o EVERYTHING IS RELEVANT

Philanthropy vs. Collecting

Do you distinguish between your philanthropic activities and collecting? Or are they
merged because of how you have positioned your collecting?
o MERGED!

Did you ever consider building your own museum for his collection? Seems to be a
resurgence of this idea? From the days of the Whitney to the new Broad Museum?
(could mention Ronalds museum but dont have to as it isnt named after him). (goal is
to get at your deep investment in institutions and their relevance and future) (could be
a quick moment to call out potential people in the audience who have been leaders in
supporting the visual arts in the Bay Area I would quickly mention the Fishers, the
Swigs, the Pritzkers, the Haass, the Leavitts, the Moldaws, the Freidenriches, the
Geballes --- as like-minded people.)
o NO
o (ITS REALLY DONALD FISHER)
o I CONSIDER THE SAN FRANCISCO COMMUNITY ON BOTH SIDES OF THE
RELIGIOUS SPECTRUM TO HAVE THE MOST CHARITABLE INSTINCTS OF ANY
COMMUNITY IVE SEEN
ONE OF THE REASONS THAT IM HERE IS BECAUSE OF THE LEADERSHIP
YOU HAVE SHOWN
SHOW THE WORLD HOW A GREAT CITY CAN LEAD A GREAT NATION
AND THEN THE WORLD

There is often a tension between funding the arts vs. other critical issues in our
communities, e.g. homelessness, aging, health, education. There is an implication that
the arts are secondary to the more urgent concerns of our time. How do you see the
situation? Why are you so generous with your time, your resources, and your art to
cultural institutions?
o WPA WAS STARTED in 1935 WHEN 20% OF OUR WORKFORCE WAS
UNEMPLOYED (up from 25% in 1933)
o DURING OUR DARKEST HOUR: IT KEPT US GOING
o IF WE SAY WE HAVE NO $ FOR ARTS, WE ARE SAYING WE HAVE NO $ FOR
CIVILIZATION
o ARTHUR SCHLESINGER JR. (JFK BIOGRAPHER):

BOTH LINCOLN AND ROOSEVELT, KENNEDY SAID, UNDERSTOOD THAT

THE LIFE OF THE ARTS, FAR FROM BEING AN INTERRUPTION, A
DISTRACTION, IN THE LIFE OF A NATION, IS VERY CLOSE TO THE CENTER
OF A NATIONS PURPOSEAND IS A TEST OF THE QUALITY OF A
NATIONS CIVILIZATION.

CONGRESS TODAY REMAINS STEADFAST IN ITS BELIEF IN THE

CENTRALITY OF ARTS TO A CIVILIZED SOCIETY. IT HAS SHOWN NO
DISPOSITION TO REPEAL THE ACT OF 1965 AND HAS STEADILY RESISTED
PRESIDENTIAL ATTEMPTS TO CUT NATIONAL ENDOWMENT BUDGETS.

IF HISTORY TELLS US ANYTHING IT TELLS US THAT THE UNITED STATES,

LIKE ALL OTHER NATIONS, WILL BE MEASURED IN THE EYES OF
POSTERITY LESS BY THE SIZE OF ITS GROSS NATIONAL PRODUCT AND
THE MENACE OF ITS MILITARY ARSENAL THAN BY ITS CHARACTER AND
ACHIEVEMENT AS A CIVILIZATION.

o WE SHOULD BE DOING ALL OF THAT!

WE ARE A NATION OF HUMANITY, THATS WHY WERE ALL HERE IN THIS
ROOM

How do you feel about a recent philanthropist (Agnes Gund) who sold a major work of
art for a significant amount ($100 million+) and is using it to support reform in the
criminal justice system?

What advice do you have for us here today about how to balance personal interests
with the needs and opportunities in the community? About how to set priorities. with
limited resources.
o PICTURE POSTCARDS IS MY PERSONAL INTEREST; SPEND WELL OVER $100 A
YEAR TO FULFILL MY PERSONAL INTERESTS

o ADD TO THAT, I BUY A SHIRT AND A TIE

o THOSE DONT HELP THE NATION. WHAT DOES?

o GIVING ART
AS YOU SEE FROM THE SLIDES MY NAME HAS APPEARED IN THE PRESS
IT ENCOURAGES PEOPLE TO GIVE TO INSTITUTIONS
CHALLENGER GRANT
I PROMISED MY COLLECTION TO THE MET FOR ONE MAIN REASON: SO
PEOPLE WOULD DONATE THEIR COLLECTIONS AND NOT SELL THEM

o HOW DO YOU SET AN EXAMPLE FOR PEOPLE TO HELP COMMUNITIES AND

NATIONS?

o IF WE DONT SET AN EXAMPLE WHERE WILL PEOPLE LEARN TO SUPPORT

INSTITUTIONS? OUR MUSEUMS, HOSPITALS, SCHOOLS?

o NEW TAX BILL: OFFENSIVE!

o DO WE REMEMBER THE BATTLE OF MARATHON OR TROY?

NO, WE REMEMBER GREEK CIVILIZATIONBECAUSE WE HAVE
ARTIFACTS IN MUSEUMS

o WE DONT REMEMBER THE FLORENTINE WARS, WE REMEMBER LEONARDO!

o AS TIME GOES ON WILL WE REMEMBER THE WAR ON ISIS OR THE CREATION

OF THE CONSITITUTION?

Role of Family Ldor Vdor from generation to generation

What role does your family have in your collecting and philanthropy? (could mention
Evelyn and/or Judy) Did someone have veto power? Was it a shared decision?
o YES, EVELYN HAD VETO POWER (UNLESS I DISAGREED WITH HER)

o JUDY IS AN ARTIST AND COLLECTOR; INFLUENCES SOME OF MY COLLECTING

INTERESTS TODAY

What did your parents think about your collecting postcards and then more art?
o THEY THOUGHT I WAS CRAZY! BUT THEY WERE PROUD OF ME.
o BUT MY MOTHER LOVED LOOKING AT MY PICTURE POSTCARDS; SAME WITH
MY ART.
o TRANSLATION: I WOULDNT DO THAT BUT YOU CAN DO WHAT YOU WANT.

What did your children think of your collecting?

o THEYVE BEEN INVOLVED AND SUPPORTIVE
o THEYRE BOTH COLLECTORS. BUT OF DIFFERENT THINGS
o EVERYONE WANTS TO DO THEIR OWN THING / DISCOVER AND LEARN ON
THEIR OWN, WHICH IS GREAT, EVEN BETTER IF IT DOES GOOD FOR THE WORLD

Leading by example seeing Laura in this important leadership role.

o IM BOOKENDED BY TWO OUTSTANDING WOMEN: MY WIFE, JUDY AND MY
DAUGHTER-IN-LAW, LAURA
o JUDY BELIEVES IN TIKKUN OLAM: TO REPAIR THE WORLD
o LAURA IN TZEDAKA (A HEBREW WORD FOR JUSTICE WHICH SIGNIFIES
CHARITY)
o ITS THE SAME: JEWISH VALUES, HUMAN VALUES OF MAKING THE WORLD A
BETTER PLACE

What advice to you have for parents wanting to instill a sense of tzedakah into their
lives, even with limited resources?
o EVERYONE CAN BE A PHILANTHROPIST
o EVERYONE CAN DO GOOD
o BY JOINING WITH OTHERS OR ON THEIR OWN
I GAVE OLD NEW YORK POSTCARDS TO THE MUSEUM OF THE CITY OF
NY WHEN I WAS 15
IT HAD NO REAL MONETARY VALUE, BUT I THOUGHT I WAS MAKING A
DIFFERENCE; I WAS.
POSTERS TO MOMA
FILM BOOKS TO PENN
o YOU DONT HAVE TO BE JEWISH TO GIVE TO MUSEUMS OR TO WANT TO MAKE
THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE

o THIS IS A VERY AMERICAN THING TO DO

o WHAT IM URGING US TO DO IS KEEP MOVING
AN OBJECT IN MOTION STAYS IN MOTION
SUPPORT MUSEUMS, SCHOOLS, HOSPITALS
o WE WOULDNT HAVE THE CULTURE WE HAVE TODAY WERE IT NOT FOR OUR
FORBEARERS
o OUR CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN WILL SAY THEY STOOD ON OUR
SHOULDERS
o THE SUPPORT OF THE ARTS IS NOT EXCLUSIVELY JEWISH
