Modal Verbs

I. Rewrite the italicized sentences, keeping the idea of probability:


1. Probably it was already late.
2. Im sure you are cold.
3. Where are the 9th form pupils now? They are not in the classroom. Im sure they are
having their P.E. lesson in the gym.
4. She has probably worked very hard to pass the exam.
5. He is a very experienced worker. Im sure he has been working here for 20 years at
least.
6. Look! I can see light in Marys window. I feel sure she is at home.
7. The Browns have never been early risers. Im sure they are still sleeping.
8. Probably they have changed the programme. The pianist is playing a piece which

II. Fill in the blanks with must, or the future or past tense of have to:
