Design Document for

Big Hollow Middle School Orientation

The Middle School Orientation will prepare incoming Big Hollow fifth grade students for the new
Purpose of the Course
school building, routines and tasks and expectations in Middle School.

The Big Hollow Middle School student will learn to navigate his or her class schedule, operate
her locker and come prepared to each class with appropriate supplies. They will only fill their
backpacks with items necessary for the next class (the equivalent of no more than 10 percent of
their weight). The student will record all assignments and tasks assigned by the teacher and
evaluate if it will be beneficial to work on homework during the recess period. The student will
have knowledge of expectations of conduct and rules to follow while in school. Finally, the
student will become familiar with the layout of the school and know whom to ask for help or ask
questions.

The target audience is the incoming Big Hollow Middle School 5th grade students. These students,

while in Elementary school have one teacher for all class periods with the exception of Gym, Art
and Music. They have cubbies and desks in the classroom in lieu of lockers to store their class
materials. They have support and guidance on what homework needs to be completed and when it
is due.

The secondary audience is the 5th grade students parents or guardians (voluntarily review training
with their child to understand expectations and help and support them at home).

Students are 9-10 years old.


There are 10 classes of 25 -30 students total 274 students total.
10% or roughly or 27 students have ESL or have special needs.
Gender: 60% girls 40% Boys.
Varied maturity, emotional and physical capabilities and learning styles.

EO 1: Given a list of the students class schedule, the student will memorize class schedule, room
and locker location by the end of the first week of class.

TO 2: To introduce students to a new teaching model that includes different teachers for
different classes.

memorize the teachers name, and the subject they teach by the end of the first week of class.

EO 2: Given an introduction to the school staff and administration, student recognizes each
individuals role at the school.

EO 1: Given a standard backpack, and a best practice stating children should only lift the
equivalent of 10% of their weight or one classes worth of books, student will safely lift the
backpack without straining the back.

EO 2: Given a standard school supplied day planner, student will record the class assignments,
tasks and notes in the appropriate sections.

EO 3: Given Big Hollow Middle Schools top 5 rules, student reviews and acknowledges at least
4 of the 5 rules of conduct.

Learning Assessment Summative assessment: self-evaluation. While this orientation in not mandatory, participation will

night, there will be a parent checklist to assess if the student has mastered skills needed to
function in school or if further support is required.

This training program will have blended synchronous and asynchronous delivery methods. The

instruction for the first part is self-paced and asynchronous and will include online video

components with welcome messages from the principal, the fifth grade teachers and other key

staff members in the schools YouTube channel. There are online elements with practical
elements such as opening a lock, memory games for class schedules and instruction on how to
safely lift and carry your backpack. There will be a video tour of the school led by two students
from a previous school year. Finally a age appropriate time management module will be provided
to help with class assignments.

The second part of the orientation will consist of an in school orientation night for students and
parents the night before school starts. This evening will have a welcome presentation from the
principal a meet and greet with the students teachers and some fun games to reinforce skills
learned online.
Instructional Strategy This RLO will primarily be a self-paced tutorial (the student will be encouraged to practice
for RLO learning the combination and opening the lock while taking this RLO and before school starts).

Course Structure This RLO will be a part of the Overall Orientation that will include 8 modules with two to three

Support requirements Support requirements will include the technology department to assist with setting up the
for RLO and course technical requirements, the administration and 4th and 5th grade teachers serving as Subject Matter
Experts, and the 5th grade students parents to help the students navigate the course. Their buy in
