Extreme Memory: The Woman Who Can't Forget
Can you remember what you were doing on
January 21, 2006? Was it a Monday, a Tuesday, or
what? What was on TV? What did you have for lunch?
Jill Price can tell you instantly, without looking it up,
without even stopping to think about it. Price can
remember the events of every day in her life, from 1980
to the present, in great detail. As Price told TV journalist
Diane Sawyer, "If you throw a date out at me, it's as if I
pulled a videotape out, put it in a VCR, and just watched
the day. As it happened. From my point of view."
Price has a rare condition called hyperthymestic
syndrome (HS). This big term has a simple meaning an
automatic memory of nearly everything that happened
in her life. She gets clear pictures in her mind of what
she did on a certain day, the weather, the day of the
week, and any important news she heard on that day.
She remembers only things that happened directly to
her. Her super-memory is all autobiographical. In other
respects, her memory is not especially good. She did
not memorize facts very well in school. She can't
remember long strings of numbers or entire phone
books, as some other people with super-memories can.
Memory specialist Dr. James McGaugh at the
University of California-Irvine met Price in 2000 and
diagnosed her condition. Since then, only two other
persons in the world have been found to have HS. The
factors producing her remarkable memory are still not
fully understood. By scanning her brain, McGaugh
discovered that a part called the amygdala is three
times as large as normal. This is almost certainly a
factor, but scientists know too little about the brain to
say exactly how. Her exceptional memory first appeared
just after her family moved from New Jersey to
California. Maybe the shock of the move played a part.
Her memory became almost perfect when she was 14,
at an age when the body's chemistry changes a lot.
Maybe there is a chemical cause as well.
Price says her amazing memory is not entirely a
good thing. She cannot turn off the memories when
they come. Consequently, she is often distracted from
important things in her life right now. Also, she
remembers bad things as well as goodincluding
painful events she'd rather forget. As Price says, "Every
day, you are able to take the trash and put it outside.
Well, I've got 43 years of trash that just piles up and
follows me around." By the way, January 21, 2006, was
a Saturday, and the TV show Cops was on from 8:00 to
9:00 in the evening. You can google it to confirm, but Jill
Price could tell you a lot faster.
