PROJECT R&D+I

TITLE
VALOR INTEGRADOR - INTEGRATED VALORIZATION OF AGRICULTURAL BYPRODUCTS
FOR APPLICATION IN HUMAN AND ANIMAL FEED

HIGHLIGHTS
Obtaining ingredients of differentiated and validated value for food and feed, food
prototypes and feed incorporating the most promising ingredients and a pilot
demonstration unit incorporating the integrated recovery processes applied to the various
by-products.

ABSTRACT
Considering that a large quantity of by-products is generated in the food industry and that most of
them remain unresolved, due to the impossibility of isolated recovery of a by-product or limited
exploitation of the resulting products when directed to a specific sector, it is crucial to study an
integrated approach to recovery of these by-products. Thus, this project aimed to establish the
integrated valorization of by-products of several food industries rich in proteins or polysaccharides,
developing an approach of shared processes maximizing the valorization of the fractions obtained
between human and animal feed. To this end, a promoter, Sorgal, an animal feed producer,
associated with industries that expect to value products or deepen solutions already developed in
previous projects (UNICER, Central Meats, Avicasal, Germen, Poveira) through conjugated
technologies in a prototype to be developed by the company Vallinox and in line with the
technologies already implemented by the Savinor by-product valorization company to obtain
value-added products of interest for human consumption to be tested in prototypes by Primor,
Poveira, Germen and in animal feed, whose application potential will be validated by Sorgal. In
order to complete the consortium and ensure the scientific component, two SCT institutions were
involved, which supported the optimization of extraction, obtaining high value fractions,
demonstration of in vitro potential and application in food formulations (UM and ESB), an
institution which supported clinical validation of the potential of ingredients in human nutrition
(FM) and an institution that supported the validation of the potential of animal feed fractions
(ICBAS). The by-products that were valorized were approached in the processing by their
composition: extraction, fractionation and concentration of the protein in the solid residues of fish
- bones, scales and meat, residues of meat products, feathers, hair, bones, blood and brewer 's
yeast. In solid residues such as pimples, scales and bone simultaneously rich in minerals were
approached by a valorization that obtained hydroxyapatite after extracting the protein (collagen
or gelatin). The residues rich in polysaccharides - dreche and brewer's yeast and wheat germ were
used to obtain hydrolysed fractions of oligosaccharides and nondigestible fiber after extraction,
fractionation and concentration.
