Mauritius is a water-stressed island. The island is moving further into the water-scarce zone with
continued population growth, where water availability will be a limiting factor to our socio-
economic development.
Increasing water demand due to demographic changes is putting stress on existing water
resources and we have not kept pace with the changes in distribution patterns. Demand for water
is increasing by 2.5 percent a year and supply cannot keep pace.
Water is lost mainly in bathing, toilet flushing, clothes washing, vehicle and floor/pavement washing,
garden irrigation. In Mauritius, the average domestic water consumption ranges between 180 to
220 liters per people.
In the past, Mauritius has faced lots of problems concerning water. During the months of October,
November and December we often have to face water shortage problems.
