Unit Title: Cellular Division(Mitosis) Name: Michael Crial

Content Area: Biology Grade Level: 9th/10th grade
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):

HS-LS1-4. Use a model to illustrate the role of cellular division (mitosis) and differentiation in producing and maintaining complex
organisms. [Assessment Boundary: Assessment does not include specific gene control mechanisms or rote memorization of the steps of mitosis.]

The performance expectation above was developed using the following elements from the NRC document A Framework for K-12 Science Education:

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Standards Addressed
1. The student will be able to illustrate the process of cell division and explain its role in maintaining a complex organism(NGSS)
2. The students will be able to develop a model of mitosis(NGSS/ELD/CC)
3. Students will be able to discuss with each other the process of mitosis(CC/ELD)
4. Students will be able to summarize the process of mitosis verbally and through writing(ELD/CC)
5. Students will be prepared to present the process of mitosis to the class(ELD/CC)
6. The students will be able to demonstrate proficiency in the vocabulary of mitosis(ELD/CC)

General Questions to be answered: (BIG IDEAS)

1. What is cell division?
2. How does cell division occur in the body?
3. What is the purpose of cell division?
4. What is mitosis and what is the purpose?
5. What are the steps of mitosis?
6. If there are complications during the mitotic process how does the body respond? How does the cell respond?

Unit Summary:
The main goal of this unit is to learn about the process of cell division through mitosis. The students need to understand that cell division is responsible for the construction
and maintenance of the complex organism. The students will learn the functions of the 4 main steps of mitosis and how the organelles, DNA, and microtubules interact within
the cell. The students will then learn how to make models and graphs once they have shown acceptable knowledge of the content. The use of modeling and simulation will
help these students with other content areas because the students will focus on how changes in an environment can change a total outcome. This allows for the students to
practice their critical thinking skills. The students will show they have learned and processed the materials through formative and summative assessments outlined below.
These assessments collectively answer the big ideas above and coincide with the NGSS and common core standards.
