LucidSound LS35X For Xbox/PCs

LucidSound announced a new headset called the LS35X
that is an officially licensed Xbox product. The company
says the LS35X is the first wireless headset that lets users
connect directly to Xbox One consoles without the use of
a base station or cables. The LS35X connects to an Xbox
One in the same way as an official Xbox One wireless
controller, so there is no need to use a base station or
to mess with configuration settings. LucidSound says
its headset will work with future Xbox systems as well,
meaning it will be ready for Scorpio. In the same fashion,

MP3 Format Reaches Its Official End
Whether you noticed or not, the MP3 format came to
its official licensing end April 23. Fraunhofer Institute for
Integrated Circuits, which worked to develop the standard in
the 1980s, announced its licensing program for certain MP3-
related patents and software of Technicolor and Fraunhofer IIS
has been terminated. The institute faced many hurdles during
the early days of MP3, which the institute states it created as
a way to let users of portable music players store their entire
music collections. At its most basic level, MP3 encodes and

To find out how widespread the problem is, the researchers
created a tool to identify and characterize vulnerable open-port
usage in Android apps and then analyzed 24,000 popular mobile
apps. The analysis found that more than half of the usage of open
ports in the apps was unprotected, creating the opportunity for
thieves to steal private information, remotely control devices,
perform a denial-of-service attack, or inject malicious code, the
researchers note. The problem isnt necessarily caused by poor
implementation of apps, the researchers state, but is instead
caused by popular ways open ports are used in smartphones.

says Carter. Just some of the work in
progress, on Microns part, includes designing

selecting market partners.

Cost Benefits
In current computer architectures,
there is always a tradeoff between cost/bit,
data throughput, and the energy/bit, says
Chaudhari. The closer the memory is to
the CPU, the higher will be the cost/bit
and the speed. CPU cache, of course, is
the nearest form of memory with DRAM
behind it. PCIe NVMe SSDs bring more

At the Optane SSD DC P4800Xs
current price point ($1,520), the memory
costs over $4 per gigabyte, which is much
closer to DRAM than NAND in price,
says Chaudhari. However, the pricing
seems more reasonable if we compare it
to enterprise SSDs which cost over $1 per
gigabyte and the larger DDR4 DIMMs
which cost more than $10 per gigabyte.
Like any new product release, initial prices
are going to be high due to supply and
demand issues. As more 3D XPoint products
are made available, interest should increase
demand and lower prices.

I Left My Heart In Sacramento
LANFest Sacramento Spring 2017
Beginning Friday, May 5 at 7 p.m. and running through Sunday, May 7 at 6 p.m., LANFest Sacramento took place at Intels
Campus F7 in Folsom, Calif., and CPU was there. Weve covered LANFest Sacramento many times in the past, and for good
reason. Not only is it one of the premier LANFest events twice every year that draws nearly 400 attendees and staff, but it also
is one of the best events on the LANFest schedule for providing lots of cool AFK activities and contests. We also really enjoy the
mod contests we judge there, due to a very strong community of builders and modders among the LANs regular attendees.

This time, as we have every time weve been there in the past, we judged a great mod contest, gave away some cool stuff,
and enjoyed the event thoroughly. If you are within travel distance of Sacramento and youre not going, you should probably
reevaluate that position; we think youll be glad you did.

ENERMAX understands this quite
well and has the portfolio to prove it.
Established in 1990 to compete in the
power supply and PC case markets,
ENERMAX has evolved over the years

Unclog Your Home Network

Better Bandwidth For Everyone

A recent report from IDC found that the average home now has eight or more devices connected to the Internet.
And because many networked devices are wireless, theres an enormous demand for Wi-Fi bandwidth. The
report also found that 84% of users stream multimedia content or play games onlinebandwidth-heavy
activities that can tax older wireless routers and degrade speed for everyone connected to the network. Modern
wireless routers and whole-home systems feature multiple wireless bands, as well as signal-optimizing
technology, so each device in the network will enjoy the best possible connection.

802.11ac
Wireless routers based on the 802.11ac standard deliver much faster throughput than 802.11n models.
Theoretical throughput from a single 802.11ac band, for example, often tops 1,300Mbps with some high-end
models supporting up to 2,167Mbps. The 802.11ac signal operates over the 5GHz spectrum, which features
less congestion than the 2.4GHz frequency of 802.11n. For compatibility with older 802.11n devices, 802.11ac
routers typically feature a dual-band design with a high-speed 802.11ac band and a slower 802.11n band.
There are also tri-band wireless routers with a single 802.11n band and two 802.11ac bands, so you can split
traffic and balance the available bandwidth among multiple wireless devices.

MU-MIMO & Beamforming

As more and more wireless signals continue crowding the home network, interference becomes a real concern.
MU-MIMO and beamforming are two technologies that help to optimize signal transmission. Beamforming
allows a wireless router to steer signals to the intended device, instead of broadcasting transmissions equally in
all directions. MU-MIMO (multi-user, multiple-input multiple-output) splits network data into separate streams,
which can be simultaneously transmitted to multiple devices. Without MU-MIMO, devices accessing your
wireless network have to take turns, one at a time, to send and receive data packets.

Whole Home Systems

Even with advanced signal routing and high-power antennas, a single router might not be able to reliably
cover an entire household. Whole-home systems create a mesh Wi-Fi network, much like a cellular network,
with multiple access points that function in a daisy-chain to cover your entire house. And unlike a router and
wireless repeater setup, theres no need to toggle between networks or connect to a different SSID. Instead,
your wireless device automatically roams and connects to the strongest signal.

Build Your Next Generation Network

We know that no house or budget is the same, so weve included a variety of wireless routers and whole-home
systems in this guide. The following pages detail the key features of each product.

Q&A With David Wolinsky
Exploring Videogames
Through Conversation
For his website Dont Die, David Wolinsky conducts interviews with individuals about the videogame industry. In fact, in about
three years, hes done more than 210 interviews with people both inside and outside of the videogame industry, including
game developers, firefighters, historians, media theorists, attorneys, podcasters, authors, musical composers, and even his
own mom. Why? As Wolinskya freelance writer who previously was an editor at The Onion, NBC, and Adult Swimexplains
on his website, he found the conversations happening online concerning videogames were stifling, as well as repetitive,
dehumanizing, and typically fixated on consumer goodsvideogames as products, not the creative products of individuals.
Wolinskys interviews are typically broad in scope, freeform in delivery, and extremely conversational in tone.

Dubbing himself a cultural historian, Wolinsky has written that the gaming industry is still reeling from the stigma that
videogames are just for kids, something that resulted in a wide variety of people feeling unqualified to talk or even feel
welcome working in videogames. Wolinsky and his interviewees have touched a range of topics, including labor issues related
to the videogame industry, how game companies view and target younger vs. older gamers, why some gamers quit playing
games as they age, and the general cultural impact videogames have on society. We spoke to Wolinsky about Dont Die and the
