The Ramones and the Birth of Punk
Introduction
Pioneers and leaders of the nascent punk, they laid the foundations of this musical genre with
simple, minimalist, repetitive compositions and very simple or even meaningless lyrics, in clear
opposition to the pomposity and lavishness of the bands that triumphed in the market of the years
1970, with his long guitar solos, the complex progressive rock songs and his enigmatic lyrics.
Their sound is characterized by being fast and direct, with influences from the rockabilly of the
1950s, surf rock, The Beatles, The Who, The Velvet Underground, the girl bands of the 60s like
The Shangri-Las and the proto-garage punk of MC5 and The Stooges.

The Ramones and the Birth of Punk
History
Ramones was a punk band formed in Forest Hills, in the district of Queens, New York, United
States, in 1974, and dissolved twenty-two years later, in 1996.
Performance Studio, in Manhattan was where they played their first concert, on March 30, 1974
before an audience of 30 people and with a repertoire composed only of other artists' versions. In
this concert the band was already known as Ramones, a name invented by Douglas. As of that
moment, all the members would carry the surname Ramone (the same one used by Paul
McCartney in the Silver Beetles period), so that the three members would be known as Joey
Ramone, Johnny Ramone and Dee Dee Ramone. This first concert was a disaster, caused mainly
by Dee Dee's inability to play and sing at the same time. As a solution, Dee Dee dedicated
himself only to the bass and Joey took over the position of singer.
1974 1979
On August 16, its official debut took place in a place called CBGB
His first concert outside of New York took place as support for Johnny Winter before
20,000 people in Waterbury, Connecticut, and it was a resounding disaster.
In December of that year they recorded a demo of 15 songs produced by Tommy, of
which seven would go to the first album and two to the second.
On February 2, 1976, the Ramones began to record their first album, Ramones, with the
label SireRecords, with a budget of 6,400 dollars, in contrast to the high budgets that the
big rock groups were spending.
1980 1989
After the band's debut in the film industry in the movie Rock 'n' Roll High School, the
legendary producer Phil Spector became interested in the band and produced his album
End of the Century in 1980, which rose to the position 44th in the United States, being the
record that was highest in the charts in the career of the band. However, the result did not
satisfy the group members, claiming differences between them and Spector.
In 1981, the quartet released the album Pleasant Dreams, which continued the path
established by End of the Century by presenting a much less aggressive punk than in the
first four albums.
In 1986, the Ramones were invited to record the soundtrack of the film Sid and Nancy,
which chronicles the last years of life of the bassist of the Sex Pistols Sid Vicious.
1990-1996
In 1991, Loco Live was released, an album recorded live in Barcelona, Spain, which
received bad reviews when compared to It's Alive.

Later that year, the Ramones played six consecutive days with all the tickets sold at the
Obras Sanitarias stadium in Argentina and the group played "Spider-Man" (for the first
time) and "R.A.M.O.N.E.S." (an original song by Motrhead that composed Lemmy
Kilmister as a tribute to the New York quartet) live.
His last recital was on August 6, 1996, at The Palace, Los Angeles and his last album,
We're Outta Here, contains the recording of that concert.
Fun facts
Spector, producer of End of Century came to point Dee Dee with a gun to repeat a riff.
The relationship between Joey and Johnny reached the limit when Johnny "stole" Joey his
girlfriend, named Linda Danielle, to end up marrying her.
Johnny was a firm conservative, Joey considered himself a person of the left
Joey composed the song "The KKK Took My Baby Away" in reference to what happened
with his girlfriend and Johnny ("KKK" stands for the Ku Klux Klan, which highlights
Johnny's conservative tendencies).
Johnny Ramone was wounded in a fight and had to go through a delicate operation in
which his life came to be in danger
In January of 1990 Joey Ramone suffered an accident during a concert at the Ritz in New
York in which he suffered a torn cruciate ligament in his knee that forced him to maintain
six weeks of rest.
After her departure, Dee Dee began a brief and fruitless career as rapper under the name
of Dee Dee King,

Style
The image of the Ramones on stage complemented the theme of their songs and their concerts.
All the members of the band went to the concerts with leather jackets, ripped jeans, sneakers, t-
shirts and long hair, in honor of the rock stars of the 50s and showing that it was not necessary to
dress in an extravagant and luxurious way to play rock music. This fashion emphasized the
minimalism of his music, which was a great influence on the New York scene of the 70s. Tommy
Ramone stressed that, both musically and visually, "we were influenced by comics, the work of
Andy Warhol and avant-garde cinema."

Logo
The logo was designed by the Mexican Arturo Vega.
The logo was inspired by the presidential seal of the United States of America. The changes made
by Arturo to the logo were the following:
1. Instead of arrows the logo had a bat because Johnny was a baseball fan
2. Instead of an olive branch, an apple tree branch was placed because the ramones were as
American as Apple Pie
3. The ribbon that holds the eagle in its beak has the phrase that starts its legendary song
"Hey ho let's go"
4. Where SEAL of the PRESIDENT of the UNITED STATES was originally read, the
names of the four members of the band were placed

Conclusion
After having researched and read about this iconic world rock band, they realize interesting
historical data like that the band is a pioneer in Punk-Rock, I contribute a lot of material to this
nascent musical genre at that time.
To know where the characteristic name of the band and all its attire comes from, as well as the
story behind the logo that, in comparison to the music produced by the Ramones, sold more shirts
than records.
