Role: The Discussion Director is the group facilitator for the day. The DDs job is to keep order,
keep everyone focused and working, and to communicate with the teacher whenever
necessary.

Pre-meeting:
Complete the reading and write at least 3 compelling discussion driving questions that will help
your group members better understand the reading. The questions should focus on the reading
for the day but you may ask group members to make connections to prior reading or to make
predictions about what is coming up.

During the meeting:


1. Make sure all the participants have required materials (books, notes, etc)
2. Select a timekeeper to keep everyone on task and progressing.
3. Call on the summarizer to give a brief summary of the reading for the week. All members
should be taking notes on anything they didnt understand from the reading.
4. Ask for any additions or corrections
5. Call on the Passage Analyst to present the passages for the day. Group members
discuss and take notes.
6. Call on the Big 4 Connector to present his/her connections. Group members discuss and
take notes.
7. Ask the discussion driving questions you prepared for the day, allowing for discussion for
each one. All group members should be taking notes on the discussion
8. Ask any remaining questions or comments.
9. Remind group members of the assignments and roles for the next discussion.

Role: The Summarizer has the role of providing their group with an overview of what occurred in
the chapter.

Pre-meeting:
Read the assigned part of the text, keep note of the storyline. Summarize the chapter as if
speaking to an audience that has not read the chapter, include main characters, setting, what
happened, how it happened, where it happened, when it happened, why it happened. Use the
front and back of this paper to write your summary.

Role: The Character Analyzers role is to describe the a trait of the characters with specific
examples and explanation.

Pre-meeting:
Read the assigned part of the text, keep note of the main characters you may want to analyze.
After reading, select an adjective that describes the traits of some of the characters from the
novel, and support your selection with examples taken from the chapter. You may choose 3
different characters, select an adjective to describe them, and support your selection with an
examples or you may have the same chapter for one, two or three of the adjectives which
different passages supporting your claim.
