Unit Title: Model your Ideal Home Name: Cynthia Cuautle

Content Area: Mathematics (Geometry and Measurement) Grade Level: 7th grade
CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s):
Measurement and Geometry
2.0 Students compute the perimeter, area, and volume of common geometric objects and use the results to find measures of less common objects. They know how perimeter,
area, and volume are affected by changes of scale:
2.1 Use formulas routinely for finding the perimeter and area of basic two-dimensional figures and the surface area and volume of basic three-dimensional figures, including
rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, squares, triangles, circles, prisms, and cylinders.
2.2 Estimate and compute the area of more complex or irregular two- and three-dimensional figures by breaking the figures down into more basic geometric objects.
2.3 Compute the length of the perimeter, the surface area of the faces, and the volume of a three-dimensional object built from rectangular solids. Understand that when the
lengths of all dimensions are multiplied by a scale factor, the surface area is multiplied by the square of the scale factor and the volume is multiplied by the cube of the scale
factor.
2.4 Relate the changes in measurement with a change of scale to the units used (e.g., square inches, cubic feet) and to conversions between units (1 square foot = 144 square
inches or [1 ft2 ] = [144 in2 ], 1 cubic inch is approximately 16.38 cubic centimeters or [1 in3 ] = [16.38 cm3 ]).

Big Ideas/Unit Goals:

Students will learn to apply concepts and formulas of geometry and measurement to real life applications. These concepts include; perimeter and area of 2-D shapes, surface
area and volume of 3-D shapes, irregular shapes, and conversion of units. Students will model a floor plan of an ideal home of theirs and add objects as well. This will allow
them to work with 2-D and 3-D items. They will be adding irregular shapes to their floor plan in order to make it unique. Also, they will be converting units from small
measurements they have found in their graph paper to real life measurements. The goal for this unit is to allow students to connect the ideas of different components of
shapes and measurements.
Unit Summary:
In this unit, you will learn about geometry and measurement as you learn different component of shapes. You will start by learning what 2-D and 3-D shapes are and how to
apply formulas of area, perimeter, surface area, and volume to these shapes. In learning how to apply these formulas, you will then be challenged to find area and surface
area of irregular and composite shapes. You will identify how to apply conversion of units of length, area, and volume by computing inches or centimeter to feet or meters. As
you develop these skills throughout the different lessons you will be completing, you will be all set and ready to model your ideal home! You will be designing a floor plan
that maps out rooms/sections and objects inside it. This is when you can be creative! You will be analyzing perimeter, area, surface area, volume, and converting units to real
life measurements. This unit will get you start thinking about how geometry and measurements can be used in real life applications.
