STYE (Hordeolum)
A STYE (Hordeolum) is an acute inflammation in the eyelid. It is the result of an
infected hair follicle cause by bacteria, usually Staphylococcus.

Frequent Signs and Symptoms


Abrupt onset with pain and redness of the eyelid
Localized, tender bump in the eyelid
May be associated inflammation of eyelid edges
Small ulcers on the eyelid
Sensitivity to light
Itching, burning, redness, swelling of the lid and tearing
An external hordeolum points toward the skin surface of the lid and may drain
An internal hordeolum points toward the inside corner of the lid and may cause
inflammation

Treatments
Wash hands frequently, use clean towels!
Apply warm water compresses several times a day to reduce inflammation and
hasten healing
Do Not Wear contacts until condition is cleared
Do Not Wear eye makeup until the stye heals
Do not squeeze
Systemic antibiotics are NOT necessary
