Estar
In Spanish, there are two different verbs that both mean to be.
Each verb has a separate set of rules that tell us when to use them.

ser estar
soy somos estoy estamos

eres sois ests estis

es son est estn

Cuidado con los acentos!

A. Uses of Ser:
1. to tell who or what the subject is -
showing the relationship between the subject and a noun :

(subject = noun)
Ej. Luis y Ana Rosa son mis primos.
Ej. Carmen es piloto para American Airlines. (professions)
Ej. San Juan es la capital de Puerto Rico.

2. to state the day , date , or time :

Ej. Hoy es martes. Hoy es el 22 de noviembre.

Ej. Son las tres y media. Son las seis menos cuarto
Ej. Es la una. Es la una y cuarto.
Ej. Es el medioda. Es la medianoche.

3. to show possession or ownership : (No apostrophe s)

Ej. El boleto es del Sr. Rodrguez.

Ej. Las maletas rojas son de mi hermana mayor.
4. to tell the origin of something or someone - Where something or someone
is from or what something is made of (material / ingredient) :

Ej. Su vestido es de Target. Mis abuelos son de Tejas.

Ej. La sopa es de pollo. Sus zapatos son de plstico.

5. to tell the purpose or recipient of something

Who or what something is for :
Ej. Las flores son para la mam de mi novia.
Ej. El cuaderno es para guardar los papeles y la silla es para sentarte.

6. to tell the time , day , date or place of an EVENT :

Ej. La pelcula es a las cuatro. La ceremonia es el 18 de julio.

Ej. El examen es el lunes. El partido es en el estadio.

7. to show a normal or true relationship between

the subject and an adjective :

(subject = adjective )
Ej. La comida de la cafetera es horrible.
Ej. Las sillas son pequeas y incmodas.
Ej. Los profesores de Huron son amables, generosos y muy inteligentes.

B. Expressions with Ser:

1. ser soltero/a to be single (unmarried)

2. ser listo/a to be clever, witty, bright

3. ser aburrido/a to be boring

4. ser vivo/a to be lively

5. ser divertido/a to be amusing, entertaining

C. Uses of Estar:
1. to tell the location of a person or object : (NON-EVENT)

Ej. Los apuntes estn mi cuaderno.

Ej. Mi cuaderno est en mi casa.
Ej. Mi cuaderno no est en mi mochila.

2. to show an abnormal, untrue relationship between the

subject and an adjective :

(subject adjective )
Ej. El carro de mi pap est sucio. Los nios estn emocionados.

Ej. Yo estoy ocupad@ con la tarea. Muchos alumnos estn enfermos.

3. to form the present progressive :

(am / is / are + -ing verb)

Ej. La directora est hablando.

Ej. Toda la escuela est escuchando.

D. Expressions with Estar:

1. estar casado/a to be married

2. estar listo/a to be ready, prepared

3. estar aburrido/a to be bored

4. estar vivo/a to be alive

5. estar divertido/a to be amused, entertained
