Site Description:
Muru Mittigar is a cultural centre which shares Aboriginal culture through different programs which cater to a variety of groups and purposes.
The programs provide people with education and cultural experiences on Aboriginal culture such as Aboriginal lifestyle, people, the
environment including flora and fauna, and connections to place. The programs introduce these cultural elements to people and also provide
hands on activities for people to experience.

Science:

Lesson 2 History HT4-2 Lesson Overview:
HT4-5
Introduction to HT4-7 This lesson will provide students with a brief introduction to Aboriginal history,
Darug history then more specifically to Darug history. The focus of the lesson is on the history of
the Darug people in the greater Sydney region. Students will then gain a more in
depth understanding about land links and relationships of Darug people to the
land.

Content:

- Students will read texts about Aboriginal people
- PPT presentation on Darug history and their link to the land
- Presentation includes stories from the Darug people
- Students will play an interactive Kahoot! Answering questions on Darug and

Aboriginal history
- Students will write down in one paragraph a brief history of Aboriginal
and/or Darug people

Assessment for Learning:

- Students write a brief overview of the Darug and/or Aboriginal history in a


written task

Lesson 3 Geography GE4-8 Lesson Overview:
GE4-1
Students will learn about the land of the Darug people, the expanse of their land
Mapping Darug land and where it is in relation to the places they know. The creation of maps of the
Darug land will allow students to gain a better understanding of where Darug
land spans and how they use this land for resources.

Content:

- Demonstrate to students the completed map they will be making throughout
the lesson
- Students are to research and identify where the Darug land is on a NSW map
- Students receive a blank NSW map and must draw out the land the Darug
people owned
- A PPT presentation on the Darug land and how the Darug people used this
land
- Students label their maps by identifying where certain resources Darug
people got from specific areas of the land

Assessment for Learning:

- Students creation of a map of the Darug land, signified on a NSW map.
Surrounding the map with information about how certain areas are used to
gather certain resources.

Lesson 4 Science SC4-1VA Lesson Overview:
SC4-14LW
Students begin identifying particular features of plants with specific focus on the
Flora plants seen at the Muru Mittigar site. The plants will be identified by their
common name, scientific name and Aboriginal translation. The students then
learn about how each plant was used by Darug people in their daily lives.

Content:

- Students will receive a worksheet with the images, common name, scientific
name and Aboriginal translation. Students cut and paste these in their
retrospective parts
- Students participate in an activity in pronouncing these names to other
students around the room. When told so they pair up with another student
and are told which name to try and pronoun to the other student.
- PPT Presentation on how these plants are used by the Darug people. Physical
representations of these plants are available during their descriptions.
- Students place the information next to their images

- Informal: Students participation in the activities and interacting with the
content

Lesson 5 Food Technology FT4.1.1 Lesson Overview:

FT4.4.1 Students put what they learnt about for the lemon myrtle tree from the site visit
Using lemon myrtle FT4.5.2 into practice. They then undertake a practical lesson where they will follow a

Lesson 6 Science SC4-1VA Lesson Overview:
SC4-14LW
Flora and fauna for SC4-15LW Students are introduced to the human diseases and how they affect the body.
medicinal purposes Students will then review previous teachings about Australian flora and fauna and
how they can be used for medicinal purposes such as plants being used in healing
brews and spider webs used as form of bandaging as done by the Darug people.

Content:

- Brief introduction to human diseases as a discussion with the class
- Group activity where they are given a human disease and must brainstorm
ideas for treatments
- Brief reflection of previously learnt lessons on flora/fauna
- Mind map of how Australian fauna/flora can be used medicinally
- Students copy down the class discussed mind map in their books

Lesson 7 English EN4-1A Lesson Overview:
EN4-8D
Writing about Muru Students will use what they have learnt from visiting Muru Mittigar to write
Mittigar about an aspect of Darug life. Using images taken at the site, students will
compose a short story where the image is a starting point for their work.

Content:

- Brief discussion about what each image is

- Students brainstorm in groups some ways they could use each image to tell a
story or create a picture of a scene
- Refresh memory on writing a short story
- Students choose one image as a stimulus
- Students compose a short text using their stimulus image as a basis for their
work


Assessment for Learning: formative, students complete their composition in
class over some lessons and teacher checks progress and final product
throughout the process.

Lesson 8 Science SC4-1VA Lesson Overview:
SC4-2VA
The Darug calendar SC4-13ES This lesson will involve students learning about how the Earth rotates and how
this affects things like the length of day and the seasons. There will also be an

emphasis on the Darug calendar and how the seasons work in this calendar and
how it compares to the modern Australian calendar. While comparing these
different calendars students will be taught how using different interpretations of
the calendar can benefit the community and environment.

Content:

- Students collaborate and discuss what the characteristics of the different


seasons are
- Use demonstrations to illustrate how the Earth rotates on a tilted axis,
causing the different seasons
- Students compare and contrast the modern Australian calendar with an
Aboriginal calendar
- Discussion of how different people interpret seasons and what that can mean
for our lifestyle and environment

Lesson 9 Music MUS4.4 Lesson Overview:
MUS4.5
Using the Darug MUS4.6 This lesson will have students composing their own music by using the Darug
Calendar to create a MUS4.12 calendar as a form of stimulus. Students will have a background knowledge about
story through music the Darug calendar and how it works. Students will then create their own graphic
notation to depict the Darug people moving from one season to another. Students
will then use Garageband to create their graphic notations through the use of
Apple loops or creating their own music.


Content:

- Students will have a brief refresher on the Darug calendar
- Students will watch and learn about graphic notation and how it works
- Students will then create their own graphic notation, using the Darug
calendar as a stimulus
- In Garageband, students will create their graphic notations with Apple loops
or their own created sounds

Assessment for Learning:

- Students graphic notations and their representations in Garageband
- Students participation in the lesson and their eagerness to learn

Lesson 10 Visual Arts VA4.1 Lesson Overview:
VA4.4
Consolidation of VA4.5 Students will access their knowledge over the 10 lessons and create a piece of
Muru Mittigar visit VA4.7 artwork that links to something they have learnt. They will create this artwork as
either a painting, drawing or sculpture which depicts the information they learnt
from the Muru Mittigar site in a form an artistic representation.

Content:


- Students are to use information from the 10 lesson plans as a form of
stimulus to create an art piece
- This art piece will represent something significant that they have learnt about
site visit to consolidate their learnings.

- Students artworks will be assessed at a future date and provided feedback
