The Egyptian Cinderella

This story tells of a young Greek girl kidnapped by pirates and sold as slave to a wealthy
Egyptian man. Rather than ugly stepsisters, Egyptian serving girls treated Rhodopis
(Cinderella) cruelly until one day her master sees her dancing in the garden without
shoes and gives her a gift of rose-red gold slippers. When the pharaoh holds court for
his subject, a hawk steals one of Rodophis slippers and drops it at the pharaohs feet.
He searches the kingdom until he finds Rodophis, who is the only one who can wear the
slipper.

This is a beautifully illustrated book. Originally penned by Grimm, this retelling of a


German folktale includes themes of fulfilling promises at any cost, honor, love, and
persistence through trials. As stated by the authors in the authors note, this tale has
elements similar to Beauty and the Beast and East of the Sun, West of the Moon. It is
also known by another Grimm title, The Singing, Soaring Lark.

One Grain of Rice

This folktale tells the story of an Indian Raja who collected surplus rice from his people
Raja for a time when they would need it. When that time arrived, the Raja refused to
give rice to the people and so when a village girl saw that rice was falling out of one of
the rice baskets an elephant was carrying, she caught the falling rice and returned it to
the Raja, who offered her anything she wanted. She asked for a single grain of rice,
double the amount every day for thirty days, and the Raja agreed. After thirty days, the
village girl received almost 2 billion grains of rice, which depleted the Rajas stores.

This book contains six short stories from North Korea and southern Japan. Yoko Watkins
recounts these tales from her childhood as told to her during various trials in her life.
Dragon Princess, Tatsuko deals personal beauty after being ill. The Fox Wife addresses
social injustices in the 1400-1550s. Yayoi and the Spirit Tree presents patience when
experiencing hardships. Why is Seawater Salty?, and Monkey and Crab tells about how
children can bullying issues and The Grandmother Who Became an Island represents
loss after World War II.

The Twelve Dancing Princesses

This storybook is beautifully illustrated. In the story, twelve princesses wear out their
shoes nightly by dancing in a castle they visit by slipping out of the trap door accessible
only from their locked bedroom. They pass and return through three forests; one of
silver leaves, one of golden leaves, and one with diamond leaves. A common garden boy
discovers their secret by disguising himself with an invisible cloak and following them.
When the secret is revealed, the king offers the hand of one of his daughters to the
garden boy. He chooses the youngest and inherits the kingdom upon the passing of the
king.

Ms. Marzollo retells the Greek myth of Pegasus in a format similar to the Greek theatre
style. The book tells of the quest given to Perseus by the king who wanted to marry
Perseus mother, Danae. His quest is to find and kill the monster Medusa. This book is a
great way to introduce children to the components of Greek theatre: actors, chorus, and
skene. With a little practice, children can produce a simple Greek theatre production
using this book.

The Hero Twins: Against the Lords of Death*

This graphic novel retells the Mayan myth of the twins, Hunahpu (Hunter) and
Xbalanque (Jaguar Deer), who were blessed by the gods with powers, but were
mischievous. They find out the secret behind the deaths of their father and uncle who
were great Pok-Ta-Pok ball players and decide to go to Xibalba, the Land of the Dead, to
trick the Lords of the Dead. They outsmart the Lords of Death and win the Pok-Ta-Pok
game.

The Tortoise and the Hare

This picture book has very few words in it. The use of limited, drawn out text adds to the
feel of Tortoises slow, but steady pace in order to win the race with Hare. The scenery
depicts the American Southwest where many species of hares and tortoises live.

This biographical picture book tells the story of Ada Byron Lovelace, the first computer
programmer, before the invention of computers. Ada loved math and science during a
time when women were not encouraged to pursue anything more than being a wife and
mother. Ada believed that machines could learn to think on their own and was
befriended by many mathematicians and scientists,. Ada helped complete an article by
Luigi Menabrea about Charles Babbages latest machine, when she provided the missing
technical details that would make it work.

This biographical picture book tells the story of Ada Lovelace. Ada is the daughter of an
English Lady and Lord Byran, a famous poet. Adas mother tries hard to keep Ada from
following her fathers ways and teaches her mathematics, poetry was not allowed. Ada
grows up and becomes acquainted with famous people who recognize her genius with
numbers. Ada is the first to believe that someday, machines could be programmed to
create pictures, music, and words.

This biographical picture book tells the story of John Newbery who grew up on a farm,
but when he came of age, he went to work for a printer because he loved typography
and the smell of ink. Eventually he became part owner in the printing business and then
moved to London, the center of the bookselling trade. Childrens books were rare and
so he began to write and publish books for children with text and attractive pictures. At
first his books were not accepted by society, but eventually they became popular and so
began the birth of childrens picture books.

This award-winning book tells the history of Congo Square in New Orleans, Louisiana. It
begins with the slaves and their work throughout the week. They anticipate Sunday,
when they congregate in Congo Square. Both free and slaves meet in Congo Square
where they sing and dance, play instruments and visit with others from their own tribes
and languages. According to the author, this gathering of the enslaved and free was
where Jazz music got its start.

Grace Hopper: Queen of Computer Code

This biographical picture book tells the story of Grace Hopper. Grace graduated with a
PhD from Yale University in mathematics and was the first to think of using English
words in computer programs. During World War II, Grace joins the U.S. Navy and
continues to develop computer programs. Grace retired from the U.S. Navy twice, once
at 60 and again, after being recalled to active duty by the Navy, at 79.

Grandfathers Journey

This award-winning book tells the story of one Japanese familys journey to and from
America over three generations. It begins with the traveling to and exploring America,
but returning home to marry. He brings his family to America, but returns to Japan after
his daughter is nearly grown. She marries, moves to a big city, and has a child of her own.
The child grows up with stories about California from his grandfather and eventually,
after the war, returns to California to see it for himself.

This picture book has no words. The story shows a lonely girl who uses a red crayon to
draw a door on her bedroom wall through which she escapes into an imaginary world.
Using her red crayon to draw the means by which she can escape difficulties, she
ventures through dark woods, down a winding river in her boat, and into a castle by hot
air balloon. The king of the castle locks her in a cage because she released a purple bird,
so the little girl draws a magic carpet to fly away. She follows the purple bird and
discovers a purple door through which she goes, only to find a lonely boy like herself
who drew a door to venture into the same imaginary world.

Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Tale

This book finds Trixie and her father on an errand to the laundromat. At the laundromat,
Trixie helps her father with the laundry. On the way home, Trixie misplaces her stuffed
bunny and throws a fit much to her Fathers annoyance. When they get home, Mother
realizes what happens and the family races back to find the bunny and Trixie exclaims
Knuffle Bunny, which are her first words.

Outside Over There

In this picture book, a father leaves a little girl, her mother, and baby sister while he
goes off to sea. The little girl is not paying attention when goblins come and steal away
the baby. The little girl goes in search of her baby sister and finds the goblins planning a
wedding to the baby. The little girl plays her horn causing the goblins to dance until they
turn into a dancing stream. The little girl returns home with her sister and takes care
of the sister and mother until the father comes home.

This picture book tells the story of a little boys first day at school. It begins with him
waking up and getting ready and ends when he gets permission to go to the library to
find a picture book, Treasure Island. In the background, pirate ghosts appear and follow

jargon, which is listed on the back endpapers, to talk about his day.

Stone Angel

Stone Angel is a story about a Jewish family living in France before the Nazi invasion. A
little girl and her brother experience childhood freedom until her father loses his job
and the family is evicted because they are Jews. The family flees to the mountains to live
and then escapes over the Pyrenees Mountains to Spain before taking a boat to England
where they live with their Cousin Jacob. After the war is over, the family returns to Paris
and the girl finds a stone angel in the architectural detail on the faade of the familys
new home.

The Three Pigs

This award-winning picture book tells the story of the three little pigs, with a twist. The
story starts out as usual, but quickly changes when the pigs, rather than staying in their
story, decide to adventure off the pages and into other stories. They fly through the air
until they crash-land in a nursery rhyme. They move in and out of other tales until they
arrive back at their own story, ending with characters from all the other stories staying
with them. The wolf climbs down the chimney and poofwho knows what happened
to him?

helps a lonely little boy deal with the distress he is feeling.

In this realistic fiction picture book, Layla finds herself in a new school during her sixth
grade year. Layla becomes best friends with a boy named Jamie, but secretly wants to
become part of the celebrity crowd. Layla is a good student, better than the
previously best student is and when the cheerleading coach chooses Layla to be a
cheerleader, the celebrity crowd invites her to join, but is drawn into cyber-bullying by
her association with Gage and the celebrity girls . One of the celebrities is a bully
and when Layla gets the best grade on a state test, Gage, the bully, starts a cyber-attack
on Layla accusing her of cheating. Laylas life becomes miserable until Jamie comes to
the rescue and explains to the principal how Gage is behind all the bullying

In this picture book, the children of Vinegar Lane are afraid to go down because Captain

better he invited them in to his house to see all of the wonderful things he made out of
the junk lying around his house.

Song of the Swallows

This realistic fiction picture book tells the story of the swallows that make their nests in
Capistrano, California. A little boy named Juan goes to the Mission of Capistrano to
attend school. At the Mission, Julian the gardener tells Juan about the swallows that
nest in Capistrano, migrate annually from Capistrano to the far south, and back again
around Saint Josephs Day. Juan prepares and waits for the return of the swallows and
he and the other children of the village celebrate the day the swallows return.

when she was a child. In the story, it tells of the grandmother who slowly loses her

Honey tells the story of her great-great-grandmother who made teacakes when she was
a slave on a large plantation in the south. Tosh learns to make teacakes and shares them
with his grandma Honey, which helps grandma Honey remember the story of the
teacakes.

hear that two bricks of $100 bills are missing. KC, Marshall, and Casey (a clone of the
president) investigate and solve the mystery.

The Boy Who Carried the Flag*

In this interactive historical fiction chapter book a boy participates in the Revolutionary
War. He lives with his family on a farm, but when the Green Mountain Boys ask his
father to lead them through the White Mountains to Fort Ticonderoga, his family
becomes embroiled in the fight for freedom. He moves to Philadelphia where he meets
Betsy Ross. He then carries the newly finished flag to General George Washington and
his troops as they prepare to cross the Delaware River to fight the Battle of Trenton.

This Newbery Medal winner is a historical fiction based on a real woman known as the
Lone Woman of San Nicolas from 1835 to 1853. San Nicolas Island is about 61 miles off
the southern coast of California. The Lone Woman, known as Karana in the story, lived
an isolated life for eighteen years after Aleut fur trappers killed many of her people and
a ship took the remaining tribal members away to California. Karana struggled to
survive, but became self-sufficient as she lived on the island until she was found in 1853
by Captain Nidever.

back to school. Peggy and Madeline feel badly for teasing Wanda, set out to apologize
only to discover the family moved to the city where more people lived that had funny
names, and would not be made fun of by other children.

pioneer in filmmaking in the French Film Academy. Although the story is fictional, Mr.
Sleznik weaves a believable tale about one boy becoming more than what he thinks he
can. This fictional story weaves together with cameos of non-fictional characters and
events.
