1. A centrifugal pump has a 100 mm diameter suction pipe and a 75 mm diameter delivery pipe.

When discharging 15
l/s of water, the inlet water mercury manometer with one limb exposed to the atmosphere recorded a vacuum
deflection of 198 mm; the mercury level on the suction side was 100 mm below the pipe centreline. The delivery
pressure gauge, 200 mm above the pump inlet, recorded a pressure of 0.95 bar and g=9.8. The measured input power
was 3.2 kW. Calculate the pump efficiency (1bar = 10.198m of water, V1=3.39 m/s, V2=1.91m/s, P1= -3.36 (negative
sign is because of vacuum pressure present in the pipe)

2. Bubble point at given temperature T. A liquid mixture contains 50% pentane (1), 30% hexane (2) and 20%
cyclohexane (3) (all in mole %), i.e., x1 = 0.5; x2 = 0.3; x3 = 0.2. At T = 400 K, the pressure is gradually decreased.
What is the bubble pressure and composition of the first vapour that is formed? Assume ideal liquid mixture and ideal
gas (Raoults law) and the properties of gases and liquids are from 5th edition Mc-Graw-Hill (2001)

3. The rich gas flow will exit at 175F and 320 psig will have an enthalpy of 350btu/lb. Its flow rate is 34,722 lbs/hr for
rich amine and for lean amine the flow rate is 155798lbs/hr. The heat of reaction is 650btu/lb. The lean amine solution
enters at a temperature of 249F which will be set by heat transfer. The lean product gas will leave at about the same
temperature. The temperature of lean amine out is 130F. Assume the overall heat transfer coefficient for the amine
exchanger can be taken as 100 btu/hr F? Find the heat exchanger duty and energy equation of an exchanger?

5 A natural gas is flowing at 100 MMSCFD at 1000 psig and 100 F. It contains 4.02 mol% (inlet) and 2% (outlet) CO2
and 19ppm (inlet) and 4ppm (outlet) H2S. It is being treated by the amine process using DEA. The outlet gas contains
no acid components. Calculate the flow rate of DEA/MEA required and the tower diameter.

6 A solute A is to be recovered from an inert carrier gas B by absorption into a solvent. The gas entering into the
absorber flows at a rate of 500 kmol/h with yA = 0.3 and leaving the absorber with yA = 0.01. Solvent enters the
absorber at the rate of 1500 kmol/h with xA = 0.001. The equilibrium relationship is yA = 2.8 xA. The carrier gas may
be considered insoluble in the solvent and the solvent may be considered non-volatile. Construct the x-y plots for the
equilibrium and operating lines using both mole fraction and solute-free coordinates.
The solute-free flow rates of the solvent and carrier gas are = 1498.5 kmol/h : = 350 kmol/h
