The lighthearted, jaunty character of this piece requires poco marcato styling for the
short-note figures and a slight marcato for many of the longer, broader sounds. Strings
should play with a lift to the bow for the Allegro melodic material while bringing
out the breadth and arch of the full phrases in the hymn tunes. Measures 61 84
should have a plaintive, legato sound. Be sure to give alternating wind solos balanced
weight and adjust the solo and accompaniment dynamics as necessary. The hymn tunes
Brethren, We Have Met to Worship, Come, Ye Sinners and The Old-Time
Religion are typical of the sounds of early American music, so let the performers
enjoy playing in this historic style, but be sure the fiddle tune counterpoint is
accurate.
