between us andthere. 2 patrols from L company we re sent to
find out . One from t he 3rd nlatoon and one from t he 1st. I
was i n the 1st platoon patroi with Lt . Steen . \'Je started out
from the top of Letzeberg Hill at 1000--the g round was covere d
with sno~--W8 slid to the bottom of the hill , and then began to
use our feet. On t he way we met some civl lians who said the
heinies had left about 12 hours previously . \?e used the vi n e
y a rds as much as possible for concealment . '7e reached Wint zen
heim and , l~oking into it, saw n o soldiers but there were sholls
hitting one end 01 it. We sneaked into the tovm via some back
yards , still n ot knowing v1hu.t to exnect.. Suddenly we spotted
a uniiorm with a beret on to p . Y!e knew everything 1;ms ok . 7e
hailed thG :French ooldier who toolr us to a h ot el. There were
n o guards along the street a..nd none outside the hotel, But
i nsi d e t he hotel the French were h avin g one big celebration--
singing , dancing and drinking. They gave us S'lme delicious
1rench :fried potatoes that they had pre pared while we wa ited.
