Lesson Plan: 2-D Shapes

Overview: Different educational websites will be used to enhance students learning

about
shapes.
Grade Level: 2nd Grade
Materials: Computer/iPad/Laptop
Objectives: Second graders will be informed about different names of shapes and learn
new
vocabulary regarding simple geometry. They will differentiate the number of sides shapes
have and recognize that size does not change the name of the shape. Visual representation
is key to this lesson.

CCSS: Geometry
Geometry (1.G.1) Reason with shapes and their attributes: Distinguish between
defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) versus non-defining
attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall size); build and draw shapes to possess defining
attributes.

Step 0: Arrive to class at 4:20 p.m.

Step 1: Opening (Purpose)

Hello class! Today we are going to introduce shapes to you. The purpose of this
lesson is to teach you different types of shapes. We will review names of shapes
and the number of sides you would identify them with. We will discuss the
differences and similarities. We also have interactive websites for you to use to
work on your shape identification. You will need to fill out 3 shapes that you
learn about throughout the lesson and write the number of sides. Then sketch an
object that you see, that represents that shape. (5 minutes)

Step 2: Watch interactive song video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lcl8uB2AWM0
We will present a youtube video that sings a song about shapes and presents
viewers with shapes that we see in the world around us. After the video we will
hold a discussion reflecting on what shapes we see around us. We will have
students raise their hands and describe objects that are recognizable shapes. The
worksheet for students to follow along with is beneficial to their learning
experience and makes it more engaging, not just listening. (5-10 minutes)

Step 3: Pre-scripting
We will then present a slide that has the names of shapes listed. The students will
participate and match the name to the shape on the board. Participants will come
up and point to the shape and name. They will mark this information on the
worksheet. (8 minutes)

Step 4: Sides and Size

The next slide reviews the number of sides the same shapes we reviewed before
have. The worksheet also has a blank spot for students to fill in as we explain how
many sides the shapes have. Students will also learn the importance of size. There
are visual examples of the shapes in different sizes. We will make it clear to
students that the size of a shape is not going to change the name of the shape
unless the number of sides are different. (8 minutes)

Step 5: Definitions
We will also teach students the simple definitions of shapes. They can be
identified in multiple aspects. Students will popcorn on other students and read
what is written on the slide. The students can hear each other talk and practice
reading skills. (8 minutes)

Step 6: Technology practice in the classroom

Several centers will be included in the classroom that focus on practicing the
recognition of the shapes characteristics. The students will switch to another
center after 10-15 minutes at one center. One of the centers will be a technology
center where the students will use either a computer, Ipad or laptop to access
educational games. There will be a matching game, tangram game and a website
where they could create their own pictures by using 2-D shapes.

The links to these three activities will be posted on Padlet for the students to
access.

Step 7: Reflection
Shapes are all around us and usually go unnoticed. Children will learn to
recognize everyday objects and signs as a way to connect their world outside of
the classroom. Second graders observe that size is not how we identify shapes.
We recognize them by the number of sides. There are a variety of techniques to
present shapes to students. Visuals are essential in this lesson.
