Simplify the following equation.
5 +3 2+1
- +
2 2 +7+3 2 2 32 2 +6

SOLUTION:

5 +3 2+1 5 +3 2+1
2 2 +7+3
- 2 2 32 + 2 +6 = ( 2+1 )( +3 ) - (2+1)(2) + ( +3)( 2)

5( 2)(3)(+3)+( 2+1)( 2+1)

1. PARTIAL FRACTION
Find the value of A in the given equation:
7
= +
2 +6 +3 2

SOLUTION:

7
2 +6
= +3 + 2

LCD: x2+x 6 = (x+3) (x 2)

x 7 = A (x 2) + B (x + 3)
x 7 = Ax 2A + Bx + 3B
Combine like terms:
x 7 = Ax + Bx 2A + 3B
x 7 = (A + B) x (2A + 3B)
Equate coefficient of x term:
1=A+B equation 1
B=1A equation 2
Equate constant term:
7 = 7A 3B
Substitute equation 1 and equation 2
7 = 2A 3 (1 A)
7 = 2A 3 + 3A
5A = 10
A=2

2. QUADRATIC EQUATION
What is the equation of whose roots are the reciprocal of the roots of 2x 2 3x 5 = 0?

SOLUTION:

2x 2 3x 5 = 0
(2x + 2)(x 2.5) = 0
x = 2.5
x = 1

Thus, the roots of the second equation are:

1
x1 = = 0.4
2.5
1
x2 = = 1
1

Solving for the second equation:

(x 0.4)(x + 1) = 0
x 2 + x 0.4x 0.4 = 0
(x 2 + 0.6x 0.4 = 0) 5
5x 2 + 3x 2 = 0

3. QUADRATIC FORMULA
Solve for the value of a in the equation a8 17a4 + 16 = 0

SOLUTION:

Let: x = a4 and x2 = a8
x2 17x + 16 = 0
Using the quadratic formula;
17 (17)2 4(1)(16)
x= 2
17 15
x= 2

Thus,
x1 = 1 x2 = 1
a4= 1 a4= 16
a = 1 a = 2
