Public sector corruption is a key barrier to effective service delivery. Corruption can prevent the
equitable allocation of goods and services to citizens by seeping into all aspects of life, from
starting a new business to getting a passport or to seeing a doctor. It can take many forms, from
bureaucrats asking citizens for bribes to perform basic services, to hospital employees stealing
medicines that were meant to be distributed to the poor, to bureaucrats receiving salaries for jobs
that they do not accomplish. On a macro level, many scholars believe that corruption impedes
economic growth and development.

In this paper, the definition of corruption given by Banerjee et al. (2011) as an incident where a
bureaucrat (or an elected official) breaks a rule for private gain has been adopted. This
definition includes the most common forms of corruption.

The aim of this project is to review the effectiveness of major interventions to curb corruption in
contemporary India. These will include both legislative as well as executive initiative.

This project report will strive to give a unique insight on the efficacy of the current anti
corruption policies in force in Contemporary India.
