A CONFUSING POWER TALE

BY VINOD RAJPUT

SECTOR-61: RESIDENTS OF NOIDA HAVE NOT BEEN ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE MEANING OF
‘NO POWER CUT ZONE’ THAT IS A TAG GIVEN TO THIS HIGH-TECH CITY BY THE PUBLIC
AGENCIES BOASTFULLY. IN THIS GOVERNMENT DECLARED NO POWER CUT ZONE, UTTAR
PRADESH POWER CORPORATION LIMITED (UPPCL) POWER SUPPLYING AGENCY DO NOT EVEN
BOTHER TO INFORM ITS CONSUMERS ABOUT THE TIMING OF POWER CUTS. RESIDENTS ARE
MORE UPSET WITH THE FACT THAT POWER CAN GO ANYTIME FOR A LONG PERIOD WITHOUT ANY
PRIOR NOTICE. AND UPPCL DO NOT EVEN ALLEGEDLY ANSWER CONSUMERS’ CALL AND TELL
ABOUT THE POWER SCHEDULE SO THAT THEY CAN PLAN TO COPE UP WITH THE POWER CUTS. IF
THIS IS NOT ENOUGH RUSTED WIRES, OLD TRANSFORMERS, FLUCTUATIONS, FREQUENT
SPARKS IN RUSTED ELECTRICITY BOXES AND FREQUENT FAULTS IN ELECTRICITY LINE ADD
INSULT TO INJURY.

LAST WEEK’S RAIN BROUGHT OUT A NIGHTMARISH EXPERIENCE AS ENTIRE ELECTRICITY

SYSTEM GOT COLLAPSED IN MANY SECTORS LEAVING RESIDENTS HELPLESS. ANXIOUS
RESIDENTS FORCED UPPCL OFFICIALS FOR A MEETING TO DISCUSS THE PREVAILING ISSUES
AND REACHING OUT TO A DESIRED SOLUTION. RESIDENTS AND UPPCL OFFICIALS HAD A
MEETING AT SECTOR-61 COMMUNITY CENTER ON JULY 22. RESIDENTS OF MANY SECTORS PUT
FORTH THEIR ISSUES BEFORE THE DEPUTY GENERAL MANAGER UPPCL AP MISHRA AND ASKED
HIM TO TAKE SUITABLE STEPS. “WE ARE PAYING OUR BILLS ON TIME FOR THE GOOD POWER
SUPPLY SYSTEM SO WE DESERVE TO AVAIL 24X7 SUPPLIES WITH NO POWER CUTS OR
FLUCTUATIONS. WHY IT TAKES 10 HOURS TO REPAIR A SMALL FAULT AND UPPCL STAFF DO NOT
EVEN SPEAK WITH COMPLAINANTS DECENTLY AS A GOOD PROFESSIONAL,” QUESTIONS GAURI
SHANKAR SHARMA OF SECTOR-22 IN THE MEETING. RESIDENTS ARE NOT ONLY AGITATED WITH
THE LONG POWER CUTS (2-6HOURS) HERE BUT EVEN MORE WITH ERRATIC FLUCTUATIONS THAT
MAKES THEIR LIVES MISERABLE IN THIS CITY. “DOZENS OF FREEZES WENT INTO FLAMES IN MY
NEIGHBOURHOOD SOME TIME BACK DUE TO FLUCTUATIONS. UPPCL SHOULD ADDRESS THIS
ISSUE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE BECAUSE IT WORRIES EACH RESIDENT EVERYDAY,” SAYS ARUNA
ARORA OF SECTOR-31. WHILE MOHAN SINGH OF SECTOR-56 DEMANDED OF PUTTING
ELECTRICITY CABLES UNDERGROUND TO AVOID SPARKING AND FIRE THAT TAKE PLACE
ESPECIALLY WHEN IT RAINS OR BLOW HEAVY WINDS. MANY OF THE RESIDENTS DEMANDED OF
REPLACING OLD WIRES AND TRANSFORMERS WITH NEW ONES TO AVOID INTERRUPTIONS IN
SMOOTH POWER SUPPLY. “ENSURING 24X7 POWER SUPPLY IS AN ISSUE UPPCL SHOULD LOOK
INTO SERIOUSLY NOW. BESIDES THAT, PUTTING ALL CABLES UNDERGROUND IN THE CITY ALSO
CAN SOLVE MANY OF THE ISSUES. AND NA ALONG WITH UPPCL CAN DO IT WITHOUT ANY
PROBLEM OF FUNDS BECAUSE NA IS A RICH AGENCY,” SAID NP SINGH PRESIDENT OF
FEDERATION OF NOIDA RESIDENTS WELFARE ASSOCIATIONS (FONRWA). ON THE OTHER HAND,
AP MISHRA DIRECTED ALL HIS JUNIOR OFFICIALS PRESENT IN THE MEETING TO WORK ON ALL
THE POINTS RAISED IN THE MEETING. “ALL THE FEASIBLE ISSUED DISCUSSED TODAY IN THE
MEETING WILL BE WORKED UPON IN THE TIME TO COME. WE ALSO STRIVE TO PROVIDE BETTER
SERVICES TO OUR CONSUMERS. I WOULD DO MY BEST TO IMPROVE THE SYSTEM TO THE BEST
OF MY CAPACITY,” SAID MISHRA WHILE ADDRESSING THE MEETING.

2. UP POLICE’S NEW FRIENDLY FACE
PUJA CHAKRABORTY

THE UP POLICE ARE MORE PEOPLE FRIENDLY NOW, CLAIMS THE UP POLICE
ADDITIONAL DIRECTOR GENERAL (ADG).
AT A RECENTLY HELD PRESS CONFERENCE, BRIJ LAL ADG (POLICE) ADMITS THE
POLICE WAS RELUCTANT IN REGISTERING CASES EARLIER, BUT AFTER REVIEWING
THE PRESENT CRIME SITUATION AND RECEIVING ORDERS FROM LUCKNOW, THEY
HAVE BECOME MORE SENSITIVE TOWARDS THE RAMPANT ISSUE. SINCE THE
PRESENTING NOIDA CRIME FIGURES, BRIJ LAL, ADDITIONAL DIRECTOR GENERAL, LAW
AND ORDER (MEERUT RANGE) SAID THAT THE NOIDA POLICE HAVE A LOT TO DO IN
THIS DIRECTION. THE STATE DIRECTIVES HAVE NOT BEEN IMPLEMENTED AND IT
RIGHTLY SHOWS IN THE EVER RISING CASES OF CRIME. THE CRIME FIGURES HAVE
RISEN IN NOIDA AS SECTION 392 OF IPC HAS EXPANDED TO INCLUDE CASES OF
CHAIN SNATCHING, THEFT, LOOT AND ROBBERY.

“THE CRIME FIGURES ARE LIKELY TO SHOW AN INCREASE KEEPING THE RISING
POPULATION IN MIND. THEREFORE, THE STATE HAS GIVEN DIRECTIONS TO ITS
POLICE HEADS TO REGISTER ALL CASES AND ALSO BE MORE SENSITIVE TOWARDS
THE PUBLIC,” THE ADG SAID. BESIDES HAVING A GPS SYSTEM INSTALLED IN THE
SURAJPUR CONTROL ROOM, THERE WILL BE YET ANOTHER IN MEERUT TO ENABLE
INTERACTION BETWEEN THE TWO ROOMS AND NAB CULPRITS WHO TRY TO ESCAPE
FROM NOIDA VIA THAT ROUTE. FOR ANY INPUTS ON THE TERROR ATTACK, THE
INTELLIGENCE BUREAU OF UTTAR PRADESH WILL FIRST INFORM THE DELHI POLICE
WHICH WILL ENSURE A BETTER CO-ORDINATION BETWEEN THE CENTRE AND THE
STATES AND DOES AWAY WITH ANY CONTINGENCIES.

REGARDING THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES, A TRAINED PERSONNEL STAFF WILL BE

GIVEN TRAINING ON BASIC SPOKEN ENGLISH SKILLS AND PERSONALITY
DEVELOPMENT SESSIONS TO INTERACT EFFECTIVELY WITH THE TOURISTS. “THE
STAFF WILL BE SENT BY NEXT WEEK,” ADDED LAL. THE POLICE HAVE PREPARED A
FIVE-PRONGED APPROACH, WHICH INCLUDES A SECURITY PLAN, RESPONSE PLAN,
COMMUNICATION PLAN, TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT PLAN AND DISASTER MANAGEMENT
PLAN. THIS PLAN WOULD ENSURE FULL-PROOF SECURITY IN CROWDED PLACES. “THE
GPS DEVICES WILL ALLOW USERS TO RECEIVE POINT-TO-POINT DIRECTIONS, SO
THAT THE TOURISTS CAN MAP THEIR WAY BY USING THE LONGITUDE AND LATITUDE
GRID TOOL,” ASHOK KUMAR SINGH, SP (CITY), SAID.

3. ALL FOR ATTAINING THAT PERFECT ‘FIGURE’

BIPIN SHARMA

GONE ARE THE DAYS WHEN YOUNGSTERS WERE MERELY CONTENT WITH 36”-24”-36”
WAISTLINE. NOT ANYMORE AS THE TREND SEEMS TO HAVE DRASTICALLY CHANGED WITH
STARLETS LIKE BEBO AND POSH SPICE HAVING SET NEW BENCHMARKS IN THE FIELD OF
FASHION AND GLAM SLAM WORLD WHERE LOOKS AND FIGURES ARE THINGS THAT MATTER
IMMENSELY. WELCOME TO THE WHOLE NEW WORLD OF SIZE ZERO FIGURES!
UNQUESTIONABLY, DANCE, AEROBICS, YOGA, WORKOUTS AT GYM AND JOGGING ARE THE BEST
AVAILABLE FITNESS MANTRAS TODAY AS THEY HELP IN KEEPING THE HUMAN BODY IN PERFECT
SHAPE AND SIZE. WHILE THEY HAVE INNUMERABLE BENEFITS INCLUDING THERAPEUTIC ONES,
THERE ARE COUNTLESS YOUNGSTERS WHO HAVE TAKEN TO THE ABOVE MENTIONED MANTRAS
NOT MERELY TO BE FIT, OR TO KICK UP THEIR LIVES, BUT INTERESTINGLY TO ATTAIN THAT SO
SPECIAL, INIMITABLE AND MATCHLESS “SIZE ZERO FIGURE”, UNDENIABLY THE LATEST RAGE TO
HAVE HIT THE CITY’S YOUNG, HIP AND HAPPENING CROWD. BLAME IT ON STARLETS LIKE
KAREENA AND POSH SPICE, OR SIMPLY CALL IT THE MADDENING QUEST FOR ATTAINING SIZE
ZERO FIGURE, BUT THEN THAT’S WHAT DRIVING THE YOUNGSTERS, COLLEGIATES AND
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
ASPIRING MODELS CRAZY IN THE FUN FROLIC CITY OF NOIDA.
WHEN NEWS ABOUT KAREENA KAPOOR SHRINKING TO SIZE ZERO BROKE, IT RESULTED IN
SPLITTING THE YOUNG BRIGADE INTO BROADLY TWO CATEGORIES, ONE PREFERRING TO STICK
TO A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, WHILE THE OTHER KEEN TO TURN INTO PERFECT SIZED MODELS. AS
FOR NOIDA, A CONSIDERABLE STRENGTH CAN BE SEEN INDULGING IN RIGOROUS FITNESS
REGIMES JUST TO ATTAIN SIZE ZERO FIGURE. FITNESS REGIMES NECESSARILY DOES NOT
COMPRISE ONLY STRENUOUS WORK OUTS IN GYMS AND HEALTH CLUBS, BUT ALSO INCLUDE
FOLLOWING A LOW PROFILE DIET CHART AND REGULAR SLIMMING EXERCISES THAT COULD BE
SIMPLE ROPE SKIPPING, CYCLING AND JOGGING. WHO DOESN’T DESIRE TO DON GREAT
LOOKS? FROM THE MOST CHERISHED 36-24-36 WAISTLINE TO THE LEAN AND ULTRA THIN SIZE
ZERO, THE PREREQUISITES FOR GOOD VITAL STATISTICS HAVE BEEN CHANGING
PROGRESSIVELY.

QUIPS NOTED FASHION GURU DR DK BATRA, "I KNOW A LOT OF MODELS, AND THEY ACTUALLY
EAT, THEY'RE JUST NATURALLY THIN GIRLS. MANY OF THE MODELS ON THE CATWALK MAKE
YOUNG GIRLS FEEL INSECURE ABOUT THEIR OWN BODIES. ICONS LIKE KAREENA WOULD
SURELY NOT WISH TO BE ACCUSED OF GIVING YOUNG GIRLS A COMPLEX ABOUT THEIR IMAGE,
AND THUS EMULATE TO BE AS SKINNY AS HER. THE SIZE ZERO ISSUE IS AN EXTREMELY
CONTENTIOUS ISSUE, AND AS A MATTER OF FACT, COUNTRIES LIKE SPAIN HAVE BEEN THE
PROTAGONISTS IN BANNING SIZE ZERO MODELS ON THE CATWALK. WHILE FASHION ICONS
AND MODELS TRAVERSE MANY A MILES FOR ACHIEVING THOSE KILLER LOOKS AND FIGURE,
EVERY YEAR A HUGE NUMBER OF YOUNG GIRLS PUT THEIR LIVES TO GREAT PERIL IN PURSUIT
OF THEIR DREAM FIGURES. AND SURELY, THIS DOES NOT GO DOWN WELL WITH THE MEDICAL
FRATERNITY, WHICH IS QUITE NATURALLY DISTRESSED WITH THIS UNHEALTHY UPWARD
TREND. HOWEVER AS FAR AS NOIDIANS ARE CONCERNED, THEY ARE A FAR MORE WISE LOT
WHO KNOW WHERE TO DRAW LINES BETWEEN AN ELEGANT FIGURE AND GOOD HEALTH.”

POINTS SANJAY AGARWAL, DIRECTOR OF THE REPUTED INSTITUTE OF FASHION TRENDZ (IFT)
NOIDA, “THE INDIAN FASHION INDUSTRY HAS UNDERGONE A PHENOMENAL CHANGE, AND IT
WOULD BE NO HYPERBOLE TO SAY THAT IT’S BEEN QUITE A REVELATION IN THESE LAST FEW
YEARS. SIZE ZERO ACCORDING TO EUROPEAN PARAMETERS, MEANS A BODY FRAME BORDERING
SOMEWHERE AROUND 31, 23 AND 32 INCHES, AND REACHING THIS SIZE WOULD MEAN
SLIPPING INTO A PAIR OF 22 INCH WAISTLINE JEANS. THE TERMS "FASHIONABLE" AND
"UNFASHIONABLE" ARE USED TO DESCRIBE WHETHER SOMEONE OR SOMETHING FITS IN WITH
THE CURRENT, OR EVEN NOT SO CURRENT, POPULAR MODE OF EXPRESSION. WHILE ONE
IMPLICATION OF ‘FASHION’ IS FLAMBOYANCE, GLAMOUR AND BEAUTY, THE OTHER
CONNOTATION OF FASHION IS USED TO DENOTE FADS AND TRENDS. PERSONALLY SPEAKING, I
DON’T SEE ANYTHING WRONG IN THIS MODERN DAY QUEST FOR ATTAINING SIZE ZERO
FIGURES, AS LONG AS ONE IS NOT PUTTING THEIR LIFE TO ANY SORT OF HEALTH RISK. IT’S
GOOD TO BOAST OF A GOOD FIGURE, AND BE IN PERFECT SHAPE, BUT NO WAY AT THE COST OF
ONE’S HEALTH. THIS IS COMPLETELY SUICIDAL IN THE VERY FIRST PLACE! WHAT IS THE NEED
TO FLAUNT RAVISHING LOOKS IF IT COMES AT THE COST OF YOUR PRECIOUS HEALTH?”

WHILE PEOPLE OVERSEAS HAVE GIVEN UP ON SIZE ZERO, ASTOUNDINGLY ENOUGH, FEW
DAMSELS ON THE HOME TURF STILL SEEM OBSESSED WITH THEIR DIE-HARD WEIGHT
REDUCTION REGIMENS. NO OPTIONS THEN, BUT TO LEAVE IT TO TIME TO DECIDE IF SIZE ZERO
BECOMES A FAD, OR SHALL PERISH AFTER A CERTAIN PASSAGE OF TIME!

4. CAMPAIGN OF CITY LOVE GOES VIRAL

PUJA CHAKRABORTY

WHEN MOST PEOPLE SEE A FAST-FOOD BAG FLUTTERING ON THE CORNER OF THE
MARKET, THEY FEIGN IGNORANCE AND KEEP ON WALKING. FALSE CLAIMS BY MCD
AND LACKADAISICAL APPROACH OF INDIVIDUALS HAVE BECOME THE CAUSE OF FILTH
STREWN AROUND IN ANY MARKET IN THE CAPITAL AND ITS SUBURBS. IN A CITY WIDE
CRUSADE, PEOPLE OF NOIDA POURED OUT ON THE STREETS ON JULY 25 AND BROKE
INTO THE DELUGE TO MAKE THE CITY SPARKLING AND SPOTLESS. THE MOTTO OF
THIS CAMPAIGN WAS “BLAME NO ONE, BE INSPIRED AND INSPIRE OTHERS”.
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
THE ENTHUSIASM CAUGHT ON WITH PEOPLE TAKING THE CHORE MORE AS A PLAYFUL
ACTIVITY, GROOVING TO THE SONG ‘AAO MILKAR SAATH CHALEIN HUM, NOIDA KO
SAAF KAREIN HUM’ AND WADING THROUGH THE GARBAGE AND THE FILTH LITTERED
ACROSS. AT THE NOIDA SITE, OVER 140 BAGS OF GARBAGE WAS COLLECTED BY 450
VOLUNTEERS. "IT’S MY FIRST EXPERIENCE BUT I AM LIKING IT. IT’S VERY SIMPLE,
JUST PICK UP THE RUBBISH AND PUT IT IN THE BIN. WE'RE TRYING TO PROMOTE THIS
AREA AS A NO-WASTE ZONE," SAID RANBIR MALLICK, STUDENT OF DPS, NOIDA. ALSO
PRESENT WERE THE RWA PRESIDENTS OF SECTOR - 12, MR. YOGENDRA SHARMA AND
SECTOR – 22, MR. N.K. BADOLA WHO PLEDGED THE FULL SUPPORT OF THE LOCAL
MACHINERY AND SECTOR RESIDENTS FOR THE CAUSE.

"WE'RE HOPING TO RAISE AWARENESS AND SHOW PEOPLE A FEW THINGS THAT THEY
CAN DO, AND RAISE ISSUES ABOUT THE BROADER CONSUMPTION STREAM AND
HABITS THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE IN THE LONG TERM," CAME ANOTHER VOICE FROM
THE YOUNG CROWD WHO WERE SINCERELY ENGAGED IN CLEARING OFF THE HEAP OF
GARBAGE FROM THE SITE.

SCORES OF PEOPLE CAME OUT OF HOUSES, ENQUIRED, SHOWED INTEREST, CHEERED

AND PROMISED TO KEEP THE AREA NEAT AND CLEAN IN FUTURE. THEY JOINED THE
CAMPAIGNERS AND PICKED UP PLASTIC PACKETS, CHIPS-TOFFEE-GUTKA WRAPPERS
ALONG WITH SCRAPS OF PAPERS, BIO-DEGRADABLE WASTE, PIECES OF CLOTHS ETC.
MANY SWEPT THE ROADS AND LANES COLLECTING PILES OF GARBAGE WHICH WERE
PICKED UP AND PUT IN TO HAND TROLLEYS CARRIED BY THE SWEEPERS OF THE
NOIDA AUTHORITY.

“IT IS NOT ABOUT A COLONY OR AN ORGANIZATION. IT IS ABOUT THE CITY THAT WE

LIVE IN AND IS SET TO HOST THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES. IF I DON’T COME
FORWARD TO CLEAN IT, THEN WHO WILL?” SAID SAVITA BHATIA, RESIDENT OF
NOIDA. SHE WAS AMONG THE HUNDREDS OF CITIZENS WHO HAD GATHERED TODAY
AT THE NOIDA SITE- CHAUDA MOR, SECTOR 12-22, TO PARTICIPATE IN THE ART OF
LIVING ‘MERI DILLI, MERI YAMUNA’ PILOT PROJECT FOR A CLEANER CAPITAL.
VOLUNTEERS CLAD IN WHITE T-SHIRTS WITH ‘LET’S MAKE IT HAPPEN’ AND ‘MOVE
TOGETHER’ LOGOS, GLOVES AND CAPS SCRAPED DIRT AND PICKED GARBAGE FROM
EVERY NOOK AND CRANNY OF THE COMPLEX AND DUMPED IT INTO GIANT BIN BAGS.

THE INITIATIVE WAS STARTED WITH THE ‘MERI DILLI MERI YAMUNA’, A CAMPAIGN TO
CLEAN UP THE YAMUNA RIVER EARLY THIS YEAR. “THE CDD IS A FOLLOW-UP OF SUCH
AN INITIATIVE,” ADDED LALIMA DANG, ONE OF THE ORGANIZERS. HUNDREDS OF
NGOS, ORGANISATIONS AND CORPORATES WERE PART OF THE INITIATIVE. ALONG
WITH THE CLEANING, THE VOLUNTEERS ALSO SPOKE TO THE SHOPKEEPERS,
HAWKERS & PEOPLE AND ENCOURAGED THEM TO KEEP THE AREA AROUND THEIR
SHOPS CLEAN BY KEEPING DUSTBINS AND NOT USING PLASTIC OR LITTERING.

SINCE IT WAS A SUNDAY, THE MARKET WAS ABUZZ WITH ACTIVITIES AND
THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE HAD GATHERED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS CLEANLINESS
DRIVE. CITIZENS WERE INFORMED ABOUT THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEANLINESS
THROUGH “NUKKAD NAATAK”, A THEATRICAL PERFORMANCE. DURING THE PROGRAM
EVERYONE TOOK A PLEDGE FOR NON VIOLATION OF CIVIC RULES AND TO MAINTAIN
THE CLEANLINESS IN THEIR LOCALITY. THE VOLUNTEERS WERE SEEN PUTTING UP
POSTERS OUTSIDE THE SHOPS AND DISTRIBUTING PAMPHLETS TO SHOPKEEPERS AND
PASSERS-BY WITH A POLITE REQUEST TO NOT THROW THEM ON THE ROAD AFTER
READING THEM.

THE PILOT PROJECT ALSO AIMED AT SENSITIZING THE PEOPLE LIVING IN SLUMS. A
NUMBER OF SLUM CHILDREN FROM THE NEARBY AREAS JOINED IN THE PILOT. “THIS
PILOT HAS SERVED TO CREATE AN INITIAL DRIVE FOR ACTION AND AWARENESS FOR
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
THE MASSIVE WEEK-LONG CLEAN UP DRIVE SCHEDULED FROM SEPTEMBER 6-12
WHERE KEY STRATEGIC SITES WILL BE SELECTED AND CLEANED UP TO SHOWCASE A
CLEANER CAPITAL TO THE WORLD, DURING THE UPCOMING COMMONWEALTH GAMES,”
ADDED SONIA MADHOK, A MEMBER OF AOL.

5. COVER- BOOSTING INFRASTRUCTURE TOWARDS A SIGNAL FREE NOIDA

PUJA CHAKRABORTY

A YEAR AFTER THE ATTA-GIP UNDERPASS OPENED TO THE PUBLIC, THE NOIDA
AUTHORITY OFFICIALS ARE PLANNING TO CLEAR OFF MORE TRAFFIC FROM THE OTHER
BUSIEST HUBS OF NOIDA. FOLLOWING A RECENT PROPOSAL FROM THE ENGINEERING
DEPARTMENT OF NOIDA, THE TOP OFFICIALS HAVE GIVEN A NOD TO CONSTRUCT A
FLYOVER AS WELL AS AN UNDERPASS TO MAKE A FASTER COMMUTE ESPECIALLY FOR
THOSE TRAVELING FROM DELHI VIA NOIDA, TO GREATER NOIDA.

AT GOLF CROSSING, A FLYOVER AND AN UNDERPASS WILL COME UP AT AN

APPROXIMATE COST OF RS 72 CRORE. THE UNDERPASS WILL BE BUILT AROUND 600
METERS LONG AND WILL RUN FROM ATTA UNDERPASS THROUGH BOTANICAL GARDEN,
TOWARDS DSC ROAD WHILE THE FLYOVER WILL CATER TO TRAFFIC COMING FROM
KALINDI KUNJ THROUGH SECTOR 37 TOWARDS DADRI AND BHANGEL IN GREATER
NOIDA. FOR A ROAD USER, THIS UNDERPASS AND FLYOVER WILL MEAN EASY
MOVEMENT ON THE BUSY STRETCH OF THE ROAD AND SEAMLESS CONNECTIVITY
BETWEEN NOIDA, GREATER NOIDA AND OTHER NCR REGIONS. IT WILL ALSO HELP
MOTORISTS AVOID A DETOUR VIA SPICE MALL COMING TOWARDS SECTOR 18 AND
GOING TO SECTOR 37.

COMMUTERS FACING TRAFFIC RUSH AT THE GOLF CROSSING WILL HAVE AN EASY
RIDE AS THE JUNCTION WILL BE MADE SIGNAL FREE AS SOON AS THE FLYOVER AND
UNDERPASS BECOMES OPERATIONAL. “WE HAVE CHARTED OUT THE FEASIBILITY
REPORT AND WORK WILL START IN PHASES FROM SEPTEMBER ONWARDS,” ADDS S.K.
SRIVASTAVA, PROJECT ENGINEER (NOIDA). COMMUTERS USUALLY FIND IT DIFFICULT
TO BEAT THE RUSH AT THE PEAK HOURS AT THIS CROSSING. SOURCES IN NOIDA SAY,
“THIS WILL IMPROVE CONNECTIVITY BETWEEN THE NATIONAL HIGHWAYS AND ALLOW
EASY INTER-CITY AS WELL AS INTRACITY COMMUTING. IT WILL DECREASE PRESSURE
ON THE ROADS PASSING THROUGH NOIDA, CAUSED DUE TO THE INCREASING
NUMBER OF VEHICLES.”

THE GREAT RELIEF METED OUT TO MANY NOIDA CITIZENS AFTER THE ATTA
UNDERPASS BECAME FUNCTIONAL HAS MADE THE AUTHORITY OFFICIALS TAKE A STEP
FORWARD TOWARDS INFRASTRUCTURAL DEVELOPMENT. THROUGH THESE FLYOVERS
AND UNDERPASSES, NOIDA WILL BE ABLE TO ABSORB AS MUCH RUSH FROM THE
SURROUNDING AREAS AND GIVE A RELIEF TO THE RESIDENTS OF NOIDA WHO
COMMUTE UNDER SEVERE TRAFFIC MISMANAGEMENT. ACCORDING TO TEJAS
AGGARWAL, A RESIDENT OF SECTOR 21, “NOIDIANS USUALLY SUFFER BECAUSE OF
TRAFFIC RUSH FROM DELHI, GHAZIABAD AND OTHER ADJOINING AREAS. THOUGH THE
METRO HAS BEEN A RELIEF, THE UNDERPASS AND THE FLYOVER WILL OVERHAUL THE
TOTAL TRAFFIC SCENARIO IN NOIDA.”

“SMALL POCKETS AROUND THESE JUNCTIONS WHICH EARLIER FACED HUGE

CONGESTION WILL BE FREE FROM TRAFFIC SNARLS. PEOPLE ENTERING NOIDA WILL
HAVE A DIRECT WAY TOWARDS GREATER NOIDA WITHOUT TAKING THE INNER ROADS
WHILE THE TRAFFIC FROM GREATER NOIDA WILL ALSO PASS DIRECTLY THROUGH THE
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
FLYOVER TOWARDS THE DSC ROAD, WITHOUT HAVING TO STOP AT SECTOR 37,” ADDS
KOMAL JAIN, AN MNC EMPLOYEE AND A DAILY COMMUTER.

WHILE MANY PROJECTS HAVE BEEN JUST AIMED AT ACHIEVING THE COMMONWEALTH
DEADLINE, THIS PROJECT HAS SET ITS MARK FOR THE UPCOMING YEAR. HOWEVER,
THIS PROJECT VOWS TO ACCOMPLISH WHAT MOST PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE
PROJECTS HAVE FAILED TO — INCONVENIENCE FACED BY COMMUTERS DURING THE
PERIOD OF CONSTRUCTION. “THUS A TRAFFIC DIVERSION PLAN HAS BEEN CHARTED
FOR THE INITIAL PHASES OF CONSTRUCTING THE FLYOVER AND THE UNDERPASS,”
ADDS SRIVASTAVA.

IN A BOX

TRAFFIC DIVERSION PLAN

• DURING THE FIRST STAGE OF CONSTRUCTION, ROAD WILL REMAIN BLOCKED
ON THE SECTOR 37 SIDE. VEHICLES MOVING TOWARDS DADRI AND DELHI
WILL BE DIVERTED THROUGH SHASHI CHOWK.
• IN THE SECOND PHASE, THE ROAD WILL BE BLOCKED TOWARDS THE
BOTANICAL GARDEN. TRAFFIC COMING FROM DADRI SIDE TO ATTA MARKET
WILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH SHASHI CHOWK BY TAKING A RIGHT TURN AT
GOLF CROSSING. TRAFFIC COMING FROM DELHI TO ATTA MARKET WILL HAVE
TO TAKE A LEFT TURN BEFORE THE MAHAMAYA FLYOVER AND THEN FOLLOW
THE ROUTE OF FILM CITY FLYOVER TO REACH THE ATTA MARKET.

6. FAITHFULLY YOURS, WITH YOU, FOR YOU, ALWAYS…

BIPIN SHARMA

LIFE TODAY IS ALL ABOUT MEETING STRINGENT DEADLINES AND ACHIEVING

IMPOSSIBLE TARGETS. BESIDES, THERE ARE COUNTLESS OF OTHER PERTINENT
ISSUES THAT PULL YOU DOWN AND BECOME CAUSE OF SOME SORT OF AILMENT,
DISEASE, DEPRESSION OR SORROW.

IT IS FOR THIS REASON PRECISELY WHEN HAPLESS BEINGS LIKE US HAVE TO TURN
TO ASTROLOGERS, NUMEROLOGIST, TAROT CARD READERS, VAASTU, FENG SHUI
EXPERTS, FACE READERS, PALMISTS IN THE SHEER LOOKOUT FOR REMEDIES THAT
COULD POSSIBLY BAIL US OUT FROM TURMOIL STATE OF MIND.
WHILE SOME WOULD SIMPLY DISCARD THE CONCEPT OF TURNING TO SUCH OPTIONS,
OTHERS MIGHT POSSESS A DIFFERENT OUTLOOK. HONESTLY SPEAKING, WE SEE THE
FAITH OF PEOPLE GROWING STRONGER TOWARDS SUCH REMEDY OR RELIEF
PROVIDERS. IT’S ALL A QUESTION OF ONE’S FAITH AND BELIEF. SPIRITUALITY TOO,
AFTER ALL CONNOTES EMBARKING ON A VOYAGE THAT TRANSCENDS ONE INTO AN
ALTOGETHER DIFFERENT WORLD OR, A NEW PLANET FAR AWAY FROM THE
MADDENING WORLD. SIMPLY PUT, IT UPLIFTS YOU BOTH MENTALLY AND SPIRITUALLY
INTO MUCH MORE LOFTIER ECHELONS OF PEACE, TRANQUILITY AND FORE VISION
ABOUT LIFE. IT IS A COMMON PHENOMENON THAT WE MOSTLY RESORT TO MYSTICISM
IN DISTRESSFUL AND TRAUMATIC TIMES WHEN NOTHING SEEMS IN SIGHT,
COMPARED TO WHEN THE TIMES ARE HALE, HEARTY AND ROSY.

DR. RAKESH KHERA, AN ASTRO SCIENTIST, A VAASTU EXPERT, AND AN

ACCOMPLISHED GEM THERAPIST HAS INSPIRED THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO HAVE
COME IN TOUCH WITH HIM BY GIVING THEM A NEW DIMENSION IN LIFE TO LOOK AT.
AN IN-DEPTH SCHOLAR WITH A POSTGRADUATE DEGREE IN ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE
AND GOLD MEDALLIST IN NATUROPATHY , HE IS RECIPIENT OF PRESIDENT'S AWARD
FROM LATE PRESIDENT GIANI ZAIL SINGH IN RECOGNITION OF HIS SERVICES IN THE
FIELD OF ASTROLOGY.
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
SAYS DR KHERA, “ASTROLOGICAL QUERIES ARE DEALT BY BRIEF HOROSCOPE
READING OR DETAILED HOROSCOPE READING AS PER THE REQUIREMENT. GEM
THERAPY IS USED IN CASES OF HIGH FEVER, SKIN PROBLEMS, MENTAL DEPRESSION
AND CHRONIC THYROID. SAME CASES ARE HANDLED THROUGH TELE-THERAPY WHEN
PATIENT IS MILES AWAY (EVEN ABROAD) WHICH INVOLVES USE OF VARIOUS
PRECIOUS STONES. GEMS ARE EXTREMELY POWERFUL TOOLS TO AID IN BALANCING
THE PHYSICAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL AND SPIRITUAL SIDES OF LIFE. THIS IS NECESSARY
IN ORDER TO KEEP ONESELF IN PROPER ORDER & MIND FRAME. VASTU IS A
PRACTICAL SCIENCE OF OPTIMISM HELPING IN ACHIEVING SUCCESS IN ALL FIELDS
SUCH AS EDUCATION, HOME AND BUSINESS. VASTU GIVES IMPORTANCE TO THE
SUN’S MOVEMENT IN THE HEAVENS AND BRINGS ABOUT BEST RESULTS WHEN
PLANNED RIGHT FROM THE CONCEPTION OF AN IDEA OF HAVING YOUR OWN HOME.”
IT’S A COMMON TENDENCY TO PRESS PANIC BUTTONS DURING DISTRESS OR
AGONIZING TIMES. THE MOST SOUGHT AFTER EXPERTS OR PROFESSIONALS IN SUCH
TRYING TIMES ARE ASTROLOGERS, FACE READERS AND PALMISTS. ASTROLOGER
NARESH SHARMA IS ONE SUCH FAMED PERSONALITY WHO ENJOYS A GOOD
FOLLOWING MAINLY BECAUSE OF THE PRECISE PREDICTIONS HE MAKES, THAT NOT
ONLY HELP PEOPLE TAKE DUE REMEDIAL MEASURES FOR AVERTING INEVITABLE
PROBLEMS OF LIFE, BUT ALSO ENABLES THEM TO PLAN THEIR FUTURE MORE
SAGACIOUSLY AND EFFICIENTLY. UNDOUBTEDLY, THE ONE STOP SHOP FOR PROBLEMS
RELATED TO JOBS, LOVE, FAMILY DISPUTES, LIFE THREATENING AILMENTS, MARITAL
PROBLEMS, COMPLICATED COURT CASES, CHILDLESS COUPLES AND SO ON.
ASTROLOGER SHARMA, HAS ALL THE ANSWERS FOR PEOPLE COMING TO HIM IN PAIN,
AND PROFFERS REMEDIES THROUGH PUJA, SO AS TO EXPEDITE THE PROCESS OF
THEIR WELL BEING AND PROSPERITY.
TALK ABOUT FACE READER’S, AND THE FIRST NAME THAT CROPS UP IS AK SHARMA
WHO IS UNDENIABLY A RAGE IN THE CITY FOR HIS SPONTANEOUS AND ACCURATE
PREDICTIONS LEAVING HIS FOLLOWERS SPELL BOUND AND SHORT OF WORDS.
TAROT CARD READERS TOO, ARE IN GREAT DEMAND SINCE THEY IMPART WISDOM,
BESIDES PROVIDING INCREDIBLE SOLUTIONS TO PEOPLE IN SUFFERING. THE WISDOM
OF TAROT CARDS FREES THE HUMAN MIND FROM THE ILLUSIONS OF EGO, AND ARE
HELPFUL IN THE PROCESS OF DIVINATION, WHICH IS THE ART OF ACCESSING ANY
INFORMATION NOT DIRECTLY AVAILABLE TO THE FIVE SENSES.

SO WORRY YOU NOT NOIDANS, FOR YOU HAVE THE PRIVILEGE OF NUMEROUS
EMINENT TAROT CARD READERS, FENG SHUI PROFESSIONALS, ASTROLOGERS,
PALMIST AND VAASTU EXPERTS TO HELP OVERCOME THE TURBULENCES AS WELL AS
PLAN YOUR LIFE BETTER.

7. NOIDA AUTHORITY REVS UP FOR MANAGEMENT OF SOLID WASTE

PUJA CHAKRABORTY

IN A BID TO INTRODUCE SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN THE CITY; THE

NOIDA AUTHORITY HAS IDENTIFIED TWO LOCATIONS FOR LANDFILL SITES. THE SITES
IDENTIFIED ARE SECTOR 123 AND 156 WHICH ARE CLOSER TO YAMUNA AND HINDON
AND IS A LOW LYING AREA. IN A PRELIMINARY DISCUSSION WITH HUDCO, THE NOIDA
AUTHORITY HAS ASKED THE TECHNICAL CONSULTANTS TO PROVIDE A DETAILED
PROJECT REPORT ON THE LATEST TECHNOLOGY AND THE VIABLE OPTIONS AVAILABLE
FOR DISPOSAL OF WASTES. “THOUGH THE SUPREME COURT HAD DIRECTED THE
STATES IN 2003 TO ENGAGE IN SCIENTIFIC DISPOSAL OF WASTES, THERE ARE VERY
FEW STATES WHICH ACTUALLY ADHERED TO THIS,” ADDS R.K. SINGH, ASSISTANT
CHIEF (HUDCO). HOWEVER, THIS PROJECT IS AT ITS INCEPTION STAGE WHERE THE
NATURE OF WASTE THAT IS GENERATED FROM INSTITUTIONAL, COMMERCIAL AND
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
RESIDENTIAL AREAS OF NOIDA WILL BE STUDIED AND THEN A SUITABLE TECHNOLOGY
WILL BE RECOMMENDED FOR THE TREATMENT AND DISPOSAL OF SOLID WASTE.

HUDCO IS A COMPANY THAT DEALS PRIORLY IN HOUSING AND URBAN DEVELOPMENT

AND HAS PREPARED DETAILED PROJECT REPORT FOR 10 AIR-FIELD TOWNS SUCH AS
GHAZIABAD, PUNE, AMBALA, FIRSA, BAREILLY, ETC. “THE LAND ALLOTTED FOR
LANDFILL SITES WILL COVER THE FIRST PHASE OF NOIDA, THE OTHER ONE WILL
COVER THE SECOND PHASE OF NOIDA,” SAID C.B. SINGH, DEPUTY CHIEF EXECUTIVE
OFFICER. UNDER THE THREE STAGES OF DEALING WITH WASTES VIZ SEGREGATION,
COLLECTION AND DISPOSAL OF WASTE PRODUCTS, NOIDA AUTHORITY IS INITIALLY
FOCUSED ON DISPOSAL.

ACCORDING TO VED PAL, PROJECT ENGINEER (HEALTH), “MOST OF THE WASTES ARE
ORGANIC IN NATURE, THUS LAND FILLING IS THE MOST PREFERRED OPTION.”
ACCORDING TO SINGH, “WE PLAN TO COMBINE TWO PROCESSES OF DISPOSAL BY
CAREFULLY DESIGNING A STRUCTURE BUILT INTO OR ON TOP OF THE GROUND IN
WHICH GARBAGE CAN BE DUMPED AND IS ISOLATED FROM THE REST OF THE
ENVIRONMENT. ALONG WITH LAND-FILLING WE HAVE DECIDED TO SET UP A COMPOST
PLANT FOR PROCESSING OF WET GARBAGE.”

THE AUTHORITY HAS RULED OUT THE OPTION OF INCINERATION AS THE WASTE HAS A
LOW CALORIFIC VALUE AND FUEL NEEDS TO BE ADDED TO IT WHICH WILL RESULT IN
WASTE OF ENERGY. ALSO, BURNING THE GARBAGE TO GET REUSABLE MATERIAL CAN
BE HAZARDOUS. “WE ARE ALSO WILLING TO COMPARE AND LOOK AT DIFFERENT
STATE PROJECTS ON DEALING WITH SOLID WASTES,” SAID PAL. WITH NO ELECTED
MUNICIPAL CORPORATION IN NOIDA AND NO CIVIC BY-LAWS, THE ABSENCE OF A
DISPOSAL SITE HAD CREATED A MESS WITH FLIES AND STRAY ANIMALS VISITING THE
OPEN BINS TO SPREAD CONTAMINATION. THE DECISION FOR A PROPER SYSTEM FOR
THE DISBURSAL OF WASTES BY NOIDA AUTHORITY WILL NOW HELP TO DISPOSE OF
THE 300 TONNES OF SOLID WASTES GENERATED EVERYDAY, WHICH INCLUDE
BIOMEDICAL AND INDUSTRIAL WASTES.

IN A BOX:
AS SUGGESTED BY HUDCO OFFICIALS, THERE ARE THREE TYPES OF TECHNOLOGY
WHICH ARE REQUIRED TO DEAL WITH DIFFERENT KINDS OF WASTES.

• COMPOSTING FOR BIODEGRADABLE WASTE SUCH AS MANURE, PAPER, LEAVES

AND FOOD WASTES
• REFUSE DERIVED FUEL SYSTEM FOR DRY AND COMBUSTIBLE ELEMENTS. THE
COMPOSTABLE MATERIAL IS THEN SEGREGATED AND ACTS AS A FUEL IN
POWER PLANT.
• BIO-MECHANISATION SYSTEM FOR INERT WASTE, FROM WHICH GAS IS
GENERATED.

8. PLAYSCHOOLS WHERE LEARNING IS FUN AT EVERY STEP

BIPIN SHARMA

PLAYSCHOOLS HAVE BEEN IN VOGUE SINCE TIME IMMEMORIAL, BUT ONLY IN RECENT
TIMES, HAVE THEIR CONCEPT UNDERGONE A PHENOMENAL CHANGE. IT WOULD BE NO
WRONG TO ATTRIBUTE THIS TO THE INTENSE COMPETITION AS WELL AS THE EVER
PERVADING NEED FOR GROOMING THE CHILD FROM THE VERY INCEPTION STAGE
WHICH CAN APTLY BE DONE ONLY AT A GOOD PLAYSCHOOL.
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
WHEN IT COMES TO COMPREHENDING THE PRECISE CONNOTATION OF PLAYSCHOOL,
ONE COULD SIMPLY SAY THAT THEY ARE THE ‘AGELESS TEMPLES OF FOREMOST
LEARNING GROUNDS FOR A CHILD’.
WHILE NO TWO THOUGHTS THAT PLAYSCHOOLS HAVE COME AS A ‘BLESSING IN
DISGUISE’ FOR WORKING PARENTS, THEY SIMPLY CANNOT BE PASSED OFF AS ‘VOID
FILLERS’ FOR THE INTERIM PERIOD WHEN WARDS ARE UNAVAILABLE FOR TAKING
CARE OF THEIR LOVED ONES. SIMPLY BECAUSE, PLAYSCHOOLS HAVE A FAR GREATER
ROLE THAN WHAT SEEMS TO BE IN THE FIRST INSTANCE. INCIDENTALLY, IT IS ONLY
AT A PLAYSCHOOL WHERE A CHILD GETS TO MINGLE WITH PEOPLE (READ
STRANGERS) OTHER THAN THE FAMILIAR FACES, HE OR SHE SEES EVERYDAY AT
HOME. BY INTERACTING WITH TODDLERS OF THEIR AGE GROUP AND PROFESSIONAL
TEACHERS, A CHILD GETS TO LEARN THINGS FASTER. OF THE MYRIADS OF BENEFITS
THAT A PLAYSCHOOL PROFFERS, A KEY ONE IS HOW PLAYSCHOOLS HELP CHILD

A confusing power tale

By Vinod Rajput

Residents of Noida don’t agree that the city deserves the tag of ‘no power cut zone’ that
has been given to it by the public agencies.

In this so-called ‘no power cut zone,’ Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL),
the agency responsible for supplying power, does not even bother to inform its
consumers about the timing of power cuts. Residents are severely distressed with the
fact that there are long power cuts without any prior notice.

Their complaint is also against the fact that UPPCL does not answer consumers’ calls.
Consumers feel they deserve to know the power cut schedule so that they can plan
accordingly. Adding insult to the injury are the rusted wires, old transformers,
fluctuations, frequent sparks in rusted electricity boxes and frequent faults in electricity
lines.

Last week’s rain ushered in a nightmarish experience for residents. The entire electricity
system collapsed in many sectors leaving residents helpless. Anxious residents forced
UPPCL officials to call for a meeting to discuss possible solutions to the issue.

During the meeting, held at Sector 61 community center on July 22, residents of many
sectors put forth their issues before the deputy general manager of UPPCL, AP Mishra.
“We are paying our bills on time and deserve 24x7 power supply. Why should it take 10
hours to repair a small fault? Also why does UPPCL never respond to complaints in a
professional manner?,” asks Gauri Shankar Sharma of Sector 22. Residents are not only
agitated with the long power cuts (two to six hours) but even more inconvenienced with
erratic fluctuations that make their lives miserable in this city.

“Dozens of refrigerators went into flames in my neighbourhood some time back due to
fluctuations. UPPCL should address this issue as soon as possible because it worries each
resident everyday,” said Aruna Arora of Sector 31. Mohan Singh of Sctor 56 demanded
that electricity cables should be put underground to avoid sparking and fire that take
place especially when it rains or heavy winds blow. Residents also demanded that old
wires and transformers be replaced with new ones to avoid interruptions in smooth
power supply. “Ensuring 24x7 power supply is an issue UPPCL should look into seriously
now. Besides that, putting all cables underground in the city also can solve many of the
issues. Noida Authority along with UPPCL can do it without any problem of funds
because Noida Authority is a rich agency,” said NP Singh president of federation of Noida
residents welfare associations (FONRWA). On the other hand, AP Mishra directed all his
junior officials present in the meeting to work on all the points raised in the meeting. “All
the issues discussed today in the meeting will be worked upon. We also strive to provide
better services to our consumers. I will do my best to improve the system to the best of
my capacity,” said Mishra while addressing the meeting.

UP police’s new friendly face

Puja Chakraborty

The UP police are more people friendly now, claims the UP Police Additional Director
General (ADG).

At a recently held press conference, Brij Lal ADG (police) admits the police was reluctant
in registering cases earlier, but after reviewing the present crime situation and receiving
orders from Lucknow, they have become more sensitive towards the rampant issue.

Presenting Noida crime figures, Brij Lal, Additional Director General, Law and Order
(Meerut Range) said that the Noida police have a lot to do in this direction. The state
directives have not been implemented and it rightly shows in the ever rising cases of
crime. The crime figures have risen in Noida as Section 392 of IPC has expanded to
include cases of chain snatching, theft, loot and robbery.

“The crime figures are likely to show an increase keeping the rising population in mind.
Therefore, the state has given directions to its police heads to register all cases and also
be more sensitive towards the public,” the ADG said. Besides having a GPS system
installed in the Surajpur Control Room, there will be yet another in Meerut to enable
interaction between the two rooms and nab culprits who try to escape from Noida via
that route. For any inputs on the terror attack, the Intelligence Bureau of Uttar Pradesh
will first inform the Delhi Police which will ensure a better co-ordination between the
Centre and the states and does away with any contingencies.

Regarding the Commonwealth Games, a trained personnel staff will be given training on
basic spoken English skills and personality development sessions to interact effectively
with the tourists. “The staff will be sent by next week,” added Lal. The police have
prepared a five-pronged approach, which includes a Security Plan, Response Plan,
Communication Plan, Traffic Management Plan and Disaster Management Plan. This plan
would ensure full-proof security in crowded places. “The GPS devices will allow users to
receive point-to-point directions, so that the tourists can map their way by using the
longitude and latitude grid tool,” Ashok Kumar Singh, SP (City), said.

Figure this
By Bipin Sharma

Move over, Barbie, women now aspire Twiggy’s reed thin body. No more satisfied with
the 36-24-36 vital statistics, the body image trend has drastically changed with starlets
like Kareena Kapoor and Victoria Beckham setting new (scary) benchmarks.

Unquestionably, dance, aerobics, yoga, workouts at gym and jogging are the best
available fitness mantras today as they help in keeping the human body in perfect shape
and size. While they have innumerable benefits including therapeutic ones, there are
countless youngsters who have taken to the abovementioned mantras not merely to be
fit, or to kick up their lives, but interestingly to attain that so special, inimitable and
matchless ‘size zero figure’, undeniably the latest rage to have hit the city’s young, hip
and happening crowd. When news about Kareena Kapoor shrinking to size zero broke, it
resulted in splitting the young brigade into broadly two categories, one preferring to
stick to a healthy lifestyle, while the other keen to turn into perfect sized models. As for
Noida, a considerable strength can be seen indulging in rigorous fitness regimes just to
attain size zero figure. Fitness regimes necessarily do not comprise only strenuous work
outs in gyms and health clubs, but also include following a low profile diet chart and
regular slimming exercises that could be simple rope skipping, cycling and jogging.
Which girl doesn’t want to slip into a slinky little number? From the most cherished 36-
24-36 figure to the lean and ultra thin size zero, the prerequisites for good vital statistics
have been changing progressively.

Quips fashion guru Dr DK Batra, “I know a lot of models, and they actually eat, they're
just naturally thin girls. Many of the models on the catwalk make young girls feel
insecure about their own bodies. The size zero issue is an extremely contentious issue,
and as a matter of fact, countries like Spain have been the protagonists in banning size
zero models on the catwalk. While fashion icons and models traverse many a miles for
achieving those killer looks and figure, every year a huge number of young girls put
their lives to great peril in pursuit of their dream figures. And surely, this does not go
down well with the medical fraternity, which is quite naturally distressed with this
unhealthy upward trend.

Couture to blame?
Points Sanjay Agarwal, Director of the reputed Institute of Fashion Trendz (IFT) Noida,
“Size Zero according to European parameters, means a body frame bordering
somewhere around 31, 23 and 32 inches, and reaching this size would mean slipping
into a pair of 22 inch waistline jeans. Personally speaking, I don’t see anything wrong in
this modern day quest for attaining size zero figures, as long as one is not putting their
life to any sort of health risk. It’s good to boast of a good figure, and be in perfect
shape, but no way at the cost of one’s health”

While people overseas have given up on size zero, astoundingly enough, few damsels on
the home turf still seem obsessed with their die-hard weight reduction regimens. No
options then, but to leave it to time to decide if size zero becomes a fad, or shall perish
after a certain passage of time!

However as far as Noidians are concerned, Dr Batra thinks, “They are a wiser lot who
know where to draw lines between a great figure and good health.” Noida shouldn’t have
to worry…for now.

Noida joins cleanup drive

Puja Chakraborty

In a citywide crusade, people of Noida poured out on the streets to make the city
sparkling and spotless recently. The motto of the campaign was “Blame no one, be
inspired and inspire others”.
The enthusiasm caught on with the volunteers who grooved to the song Aao milkar
saath chalein hum, Noida Ko Saaf Karein Hum while wading through the garbage and
the filth littered across. Nearly 450 volunteers collected over 140 bags of garbage.
“It’s my first experience but I am liking it. It’s very simple, just pick up the rubbish and
put it in the bin. We’re trying to promote this area as a no-waste zone,” says Ranbir
Mallick, student of DPS, Noida.

The RWA presidents of Sector 12, Yogendra Sharma, and Sector 22, NK Badola pledged
full support to the local machinery and sector residents for the cause.“We’re hoping to
raise awareness and show people little things that they can do to make a long term
difference,” says one of the young volunteers.

Scores of people came out of their houses, enquired, interest, cheered and promised to
keep the area clean in future. They also joined the campaigners. While some swept the
roads and lanes, others collected piles of garbage and kept it in hand trolleys carried by
sweepers of the Noida Authority.

“It is not about a colony or an organization. It is about the city that we live in and is set
to host the Commonwealth Games. If I don’t come forward to clean it, then who will?”
says Savita Bhatia, a resident.

She was among the hundreds of citizens who had gathered at Chauda Mor in Sector 12-
22, to participate in the Art of Living Meri Dilli, Meri Yamuna pilot project. The volunteers
wore white T-shirts, which had inspiring Let’s Make It Happen, and Move Together logos
on them, along with gloves and caps. The initiative was started with the Meri Dilli Meri
Yamuna campaign which was started to clean up the Yamuna river early this year.

“The CDD is a follow-up of such an initiative,” says Lalima Dang, one of the organisers.
Hundreds of NGOs, organisations and corporates supported the initiative.
Besides cleaning, the volunteers also spoke to shopkeepers, hawkers and residents and
encouraged them to keep the area around their shops clean by keeping dustbins and not
using plastic.

Since it was a Sunday, the market was abuzz with activities and thousands of people
joined the cleanliness drive. Citizens were informed about the importance of cleanliness
through a Nukkad Naatak.

During the program, everyone took a pledge to follow civic rules and maintain
cleanliness in their localities.
The volunteers had put up posters outside the shops and distributed pamphlets to
shopkeepers and passer by.
The pilot project was also aimed at sensitising the people living in slums. A number of
slum children from nearby areas participated. “This pilot has served to create an initial
drive for action and awareness for the massive week-long clean up drive scheduled from
September 6-12 where key strategic sites will be selected and cleaned up to showcase a

cleaner Capital to the world, during the upcoming Commonwealth games,” says Sonia
Madhok, a member of AOL.

Boosting infrastructure towards a signal-free Noida

Puja Chakraborty

A year after the Atta-GIP underpass was opened to the public, the Noida Authority is
planning to clear the traffic from the other busy hubs of the city.
Following a recent proposal from the engineering department, officials at the authority
have given a nod to a flyover and an underpass at the Golf crossing to address the rising
traffic between Delhi and Noida.
The flyover and underpass will cost near Rs 72 crore. The 600-meters-long underpass
will run from the Atta underpass through the Botanical Garden, towards the DSC Road.
The flyover will cater to traffic coming from Kalindi Kunj through Sector 37 towards
Dadri and Bhangel in Greater Noida. It will be 900 meters long.
The proposed underpass and flyover should bring a lot of respite to the daily commuters.
They would ensure easy movement on the busy stretch and seamless connectivity
between Noida, Greater Noida and other NCR regions.
It will also help motorists avoid a detour via Spice Mall coming towards Sector 18 and
going to Sector 37. Commuters on the stretch will enjoy a signal free travel once the
flyover and the underpass become operational.
“We have charted out the feasibility report and work will start in phases from
September,” says SK Srivastava, project engineer, Noida. Commuters usually find it
difficult to beat the rush at the peak hours at this crossing.
“This will improve connectivity between the national highways and allow easy inter-city
as well as intra-city commuting. It will decrease pressure on the roads passing through
Noida, caused due to the increasing number of vehicles,” says a Noida Authority official.
The great relief meted out to many Noida citizens after the Atta Underpass became
functional has made the Noida Authority officials take a step forward towards
infrastructural development. Through these flyovers and underpasses, Noida will be able
to absorb the rush flowing in from the surrounding areas and give a relief to the
residents of Noida who commute under severe traffic mismanagement.
Residents unanimously welcome the plan. “Residents in Noida usually suffer because of
traffic rush from Delhi, Ghaziabad and other adjoining areas. Though the metro has
been a relief, the underpass and the flyover will overhaul the total traffic scenario in
Noida,” says Tejas Aggarwal, a resident of Sector 21.
“Small pockets around these junctions, which earlier faced huge congestion, will be free
from traffic snarls. People entering Noida will have a direct way towards Greater Noida,
while the traffic from Greater Noida will also pass directly through the flyover towards
the DSC Road, without having to stop at Sector 37,” says Komal Jain, an MNC employee
and a daily commuter.
While many projects have been just aimed at achieving the Commonwealth deadline,
this project has set its mark for the upcoming year. The project vows to accomplish what
most public infrastructure projects have failed to — inconvenience faced by commuters
during the period of construction. “A traffic diversion plan has been charted out for the
initial phases of constructing,” adds Srivastava.

In a box
Traffic diversion plan
• During the first stage of construction, road will remain blocked on the Sector 37
side. Vehicles moving towards Dadri and Delhi will be diverted through Shashi
Chowk.
• In the second phase, the road will be blocked towards the Botanical Garden.
Traffic coming from Dadri Side to Atta Market will have to go through Shashi
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
Chowk by taking a right turn at Golf Crossing. Traffic coming from Delhi to Atta
Market will have to take a left turn before the Mahamaya Flyover and then follow
the route of Film City flyover to reach the Atta Market.

Distress people turn to astrology for help

Bipin Sharma

In this era of cut-throat competition, life is all about meeting stringent deadlines and
achieving impossible targets. On top of that, there are countless other pertinent issues
that always hover in our minds.
It is precisely for this reason that we turn to astrologers, numerologist, tarot card
readers, vaastu, feng shui experts, face readers, palmists for remedies to pacify our
overburdened minds. While some rubbish the art, others have blind faith in it. Rather,
for the believers, the faith grows stronger with time. It’s all a question of one’s faith and
belief.
What is spirituality all about? In the literary sense, it connotes embarking on a voyage
that transcends one into an altogether different world or, a new planet far away from
the maddening world. Simply put, it uplifts your body and mind to loftier echelons of
peace, tranquility and fore vision about life.
Dr. Rakesh Khera is an astro scientist, a vaastu expert, and an accomplished Gem
Therapist who has inspired thousands of people who have come in touch with him and
given them a new dimension in life to look at. An in-depth scholar with a post-graduate
degree in Alternative Medicine and gold medallist in Naturopathy, he is a recipient of
President’s Award for his contributions to astrology.
“Astrological queries are dealt by horoscope reading. Gem Therapy is used to deal with
high fever, skin problems, mental depression and chronic thyroid. The problems can also
be handled through Tele-Therapy where patients miles away can be cured through the
use of precious stones. Gems are extremely powerful tool to aid in balancing the
physical, psychological and spiritual sides of life. This is necessary to keep oneself in
proper frame of mind. Vastu is a practical science of optimism that helps one in
achieving success in all walks of life. Vastu gives importance to the sun’s movement in
the heavens and brings about best results when planned right from the conception of an
idea of having your own home.”
Astrologer Naresh Sharma has been in the business of predicting past, present and
future for the last 15 years. Quiz him on what virtually makes him so indispensable and
he would rather modestly attribute all his success to the Supreme Power.
Sharma a famed personality who enjoys a good following mainly because of the precise
predictions he makes. His followers say he is the one-stop shop for all your problems.
Talk about face readers and one is reminded of AK Sharma who is undeniably a rage in
the city for his spontaneous and accurate predictions leaving his followers spell bound
and short of words. Tarot Card readers too, are in great demand since they impart
wisdom, besides providing incredible solutions to people in suffering. The wisdom of
Tarot Cards frees the human mind from the illusions of ego, and are helpful in the
process of divination, which is the art of accessing any information not directly available
to the five senses.
Worry you not Noida residents, for the city has several eminent tarot card readers, feng
shui professionals, astrologers, palmist and vaastu experts.

Noida to get new solid waste management sites

Puja Chakraborty

In a bid to introduce Solid Waste Management System in the city; the Noida Authority
has identified two locations for landfill sites. The sites identified are Sectors 123 and
156, which are closer to Yamuna and Hindon and are situated in a low lying area.
In a preliminary discussion with HUDCO, the Noida Authority has asked the technical
consultants to provide a detailed project report on the latest technology and the viable
options available for disposal of wastes. “Though the Supreme Court had directed the
states in 2003 to engage in scientific disposal of wastes, there are very few states which
actually adhered to this,” adds RK Singh, Assistant Chief (HUDCO).
However, the project is at its inception where the nature of waste that is generated from
institutional, commercial and residential areas of Noida will be studied and a suitable
technology will be recommended for the treatment and disposal of solid waste.
HUDCO is a company that deals in Housing and Urban Development and has prepared a
detailed project report for 10 air-field towns such as Ghaziabad, Pune, Ambala, Firsa,
Bareilly, etc. “The land allotted for landfill sites will cover the first phase of Noida, the
other one will cover the second phase of Noida,” said C.B. Singh, Deputy Chief Executive
Officer. Under the three stages of dealing with wastes viz segregation, collection and
disposal of waste products, Noida Authority is focusing on the third stage of disposal as
of now.
According to Ved Pal, Project Engineer (Health), “Most of the wastes are organic in
nature, thus land filling is the most preferred option.” According to Singh, “We plan to
combine two processes of disposal by carefully designing a structure built into or on top
of the ground in which garbage can be dumped and is isolated. Along with land-filling we
have decided to set up a compost plant for processing of wet garbage.”
The Authority has ruled out the option of incineration as the waste has a low calorific
value and fuel will need to be added to it. This will result in a waste of energy. Also,
burning the garbage to get reusable material can be hazardous. “We are also willing to
compare and look at different State projects on dealing with solid wastes,” said Pal. With
no elected municipal corporation in Noida and no civic by-laws, the absence of a disposal
site had created a mess. Flies and stray animals visiting the open bins had led to spread
contamination. The decision for a proper system for the disbursal of wastes by Noida
Authority will now help to dispose of the 300 tonnes of solid wastes generated everyday,
which include biomedical and industrial wastes.

In a box:
As suggested by HUDCO officials, there are three types of technology which are
required to deal with different kinds of wastes.

• Composting for biodegradable waste such as manure, paper, leaves and

food wastes
• Refuse Derived Fuel system for dry and combustible elements. The
compostable material is then segregated and acts as a fuel in power
plant.
• Bio-Mechanisation System for inert waste, from which gas is generated.

Playschools where learning is fun at every step

Bipin Sharma

Playschools have been in vogue since time immemorial, but the concept has undergone
a sea change in the recent past. It would not be wrong to say playschools play a very
important role in laying the foundations of a child’s growth, especially in this era of
intense competition.
When it comes to comprehending the precise connotation of playschools, one could
simply say they are the ageless temples of foremost learning grounds for a child.
They are indispensable for working parents who find it very difficult to dedicate enough
time to groom their child. And with its ever-rising demand, it comes as no surprise that
the satellite city has several reputed play schools that have treaded many a mile to
develop novel methodologies of preschool learning for little tender minds. Noida Connect
takes a closer look at the various playschools in the city.

The city offers a plethora of options to young parents aspiring to enroll their loved one in
a playschool. Few of the prominent ones include Shemrock Galaxy (sector 27),
Shemrock Vatika (sector 56), Trinity Tiny Tots, (sector 62), Teddy’s Mother Care (sector
50), Kangaroo Kids (sector 34), The Little Scholar (sector 19), Windows Play Group and
Nursery School (sector 50), Sanskar Play School (sector 35), Kidzee, Mother’s Pride,
Cuddle Kids Play School and Day Care (sector 40), Euro Kids (sector 27), Parents’ Pride
(sector 55), and so on.

Shalini Bhatnagar, principal of Shemrock Galaxy Noida, says, “Children at our school
follow daily routine of activities designed to build specific skills. The distinctive facet is
the wide range of activities including singing, listening stories, music, dance, crafts,
dramatics (plays), group-projects etc. These activities provide opportunities for
creativity, physical co-ordination, emotional maturity, practical and social skills. We try
to boost the confidence and abilities of the tiny tots through fun and creative play. The
play way approach for training kids is our USP.”

Highlighting its USP, the tagline of the Windows Play Group and Nursery School reads
where learning is fun. The school emphasises on overall development with personal care
and attention. All activities are weaved in games that make the entire process of
learning extremely enjoyable. Such special is their teaching style that it helps children to
easily adjust in the bigger formal school sans any intricacy. Monica Baluja, principal
Windows Play Group and Nursery School, says the school helps kids become
independent, confident, and grow in them a strong love for learning.

Ranjana Bhargava, principal and director of The Little Scholar Play School and Day Care
Center, says, “Being one of the oldest playschool in the city, we believe in ‘A good
beginning that lasts a lifetime’ for our students. We give individual attention to every
child with stress on personality development. Incidentally, we have been delivering 100
per cent results for the last 15 years, a feat that speaks for itself about the high
standards that the school follows. Our alumni have further bolstered the standing of the
school. Our play area has modern play equipments and swimming pool.”

Shailja Chhabra, principal of Sanskar Play School, shares, “Ours is an English medium,
co-educational preparatory and nursery school conceived with the core objective of
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
imparting value-based education. The school caters to children between the age groups
of two and four years. Sanskar is a school full of values and joys. It lays special
emphasis
on developing self confidence, leadership qualities and an all-round development of the
child’s personality. Individual attention is paid to each child.”
Echoing almost the same philosophy, Kangaroo Kids in sector 34 Noida uses teaching
methodology based on the belief that children enjoy learning through play, hands-on
activities and interaction with others.

Since most of these playschools are aimed at shaping the "all round development" of
children through a fun loving and friendly learning approach, it would no mean
exaggeration to term them as ‘Unrivalled Playschools of Noida”.

Tale of a world-class city called Noida

Bipin Sharma

Noida is becoming a sought after destination for people planning to settle in and around
the Capital. The planned satellite city has become a hot favourite with the real estate
companies.
From mesmerising landscapes to multiplexes to good schools and multi-specialty
hospitals, the city offers all the things one requires to settle in. The city also offers a
cleaner environment than the Capital.
“Kudos to the top-class minds, architects and entrepreneurs for having worked overnight
to give the city an altogether new swanky look, at par with any top cosmopolitan city of
the world. The big real estate have proffered a novel dimension to the city skylines with
some of the most marvel residential home projects complete with ultra modern shopping
arcades, swimming pool, jogging tracks, clubs, ample parking spaces and robust security
provisions. The USP is the affordability and the long-term sustainability factor,” says
Gaurav Gupta of Goldmine Developers Pvt Ltd.

The city boasts of international brand outlets and ultra-modern chic showrooms which
offer a wide range of exclusive consumer goods at competitive rates.
The ambitious ongoing Yamuna Expressway Project promises to radically improve the
connectivity and traffic. The city also has several flyways, subways, underground
parking lots, state of the art commercial complexes and entertainment centres in
pipeline that will further bolster the city’s status as a global city.

Coming to the crucial educational and healthcare field, Noida is simply unrivalled. The
city boasts of world class academic institutions and hospitals. The growing number of
MNCs, IT and corporate companies again speak highly about the city’s infrastructure,
amenities and superior working conditions. Noida has large well-maintained parks
botanical gardens. It organises regular green drive campaigns as well.

This city is turning out to be a well-planned residential and commercial hub.

South Delhi commercial and cultural hub to be connected by Metro

Puja Chakraborty

With new Metro stations coming up near popular marketplaces, visiting your favourite
shops in Delhi is going to get easier. What’s more, the metro stations are designed to
accommodate the expected high footfalls in the area.
The INA Metro Station on the Central Secretariat – Qutub Minar - HUDA City Centre line
is going to cater to the INA and Sarojini Nagar markets, the two major markets of the
Capital.
In addition, the residents of nearby Laxmi Bai Nagar, Sarojini Nagar, and parts of
Safdarjung Enclave will also benefit with the opening of Metro service in the area.
The construction of the underground station is complete and minor finishing is being
completed. It is expected to open by August.
The trial run for the entire 12.53 kms long underground Central Secretariat – Qutub
Minar stretch is underway.
The INA Metro station will have three entry/exit structures with separate gates catering
to Aurobindo Marg, Delhi Haat and the INA market. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation
(DMRC) has also constructed free-subways for commuters at the entry/exits below the
Aurobindo Marg.
A total of six staircases have been provided at the station with three staircases between
the ground and concourse level and three staircases between the platform and
concourse level of the station.
The staircases are wide, ranging from 4.7 meters to 4.2 meters, instead of the usual 2.4
meters, for accommodating the expected high footfall at the station.
The station will have five escalators, six Automatic Fare Collection gates and six lifts for
smooth passenger movement.
The DMRC has achieved a major engineering feat between the INA and Jor Bagh Metro
stations by constructing two tunnels below the existing Indian Railways track and the
Safdarjung flyover, without disrupting the railways and vehicular traffic. The tunneling
was done 12 metres below the earth surface.
The Delhi Metro has also restored three parks covering around 9, 000 square meters of
area above the INA Metro station which it had taken from the CPWD for the construction
work. All the three parks will be handed over to its parent agency within a month’s time.

Shantaram by Gregory David Roberts

Shantaram is the 2003 novel written by Gregory David Roberts, a convicted Australian
bank robber and heroin addict who escaped from Pentridge Prison and fled to India
where he lived for 10 years.

Plot summary

Shantaram is a novel based on real events in the life of the author, Australian Gregory
David Roberts, interwoven with fictional adventures featuring Roberts in the lead role. In
1978, Roberts was sentenced to nineteen years’ imprisonment in Australia after being
convicted for a series of armed robberies of building-society branches, credit unions, and
shops he had committed to feed a heroin addiction. In July 1980, he escaped from
Victoria’s Pentridge Prison in broad daylight, thereby becoming one of Australia’s most
wanted men for the next ten years. This part of Roberts' life is known fact.

In the fictional story, Roberts (under the fictional name Lindsey or Lin) arrives in Mumbai
(Bombay) from New Zealand. Mumbai was only a stopover on a journey that was to take
Lin to Germany, but he decides to stay in the city. Lin soon meets a local man named
Prabaker, who becomes his best friend and renames him Linbaba. Both men visit Prabaker's
native village, Sunder, where the locals christen Lin with the name Shantaram, meaning
Man of Peace. On returning to Mumbai and after a night out, Lin and Prabaker are robbed.
With all his possessions gone, Lin is forced to live in the slums, giving him shelter from the
authorities and free rent in Mumbai. He sets up a free health clinic in the slums as a way to
contribute to the community. He learns about the local culture and customs in this crammed
environment, gets to know and love the people he encounters, and even becomes fluent in
Marathi, the local language. He also witnesses and battles outbreaks of cholera and
firestorms, becomes involved in trading with the lepers, and experiences how ethnical and
marital conflicts are resolved in this densely crowded and diverse community.

The story contains several other characters, notably a number of foreigners of varied origin
and local Indians, highlighting the rich diversity of life in Mumbai. Lin falls in love with Karla,
a Swiss-American girl, befriends local artists and actors landing him roles as an extra in
several Bollywood movies, and is recruited by the Mumbai underworld for various
criminal operations, including drug and weapons trade. This eventually lands him in
Mumbai's Arthur Road Jail, where he endures severe beatings and other physical and
mental abuse by guards, while existing under extremely squalid conditions, along with
hundreds of other inmates. However, thanks to the protection of Afghani mafia don "Abdel
Khader Khan", Lin is eventually released, and works in black market currency exchange
and passport forgery. Having travelled as far as Africa on trips commissioned by the mafia,
Lin later goes to Afghanistan to smuggle weapons for mujahideen freedom fighters in
Afghanistan. When his mentor Khan is killed, Lin realizes he became everything he grew to
loathe and falls into depression after he returns. He decides that he must fight for what he
believes is right, and build an honest life. The story ends with him planning to go to Sri
Lanka which lays the premise for the sequel to this book.

Fictional versus non-fictional content?

Shantaram is a work of Literary fiction. However, due to its very vivid content and
Roberts' known biography, some readers believe the book to be based more on fact and less
on fiction. [1] [2] While the book is published as fiction, many readers perceive it as being in
fact semi-autobiographical.[3] This highlights inherent difficulties with verification of the
accounts given in the book. Some parts of the story are on the public record, such as
Roberts' criminal history and escape from prison in Australia [4], while others remain
obscure. However, Roberts has stated that most of the story is fiction, and that he merged
different elements taken from true events and people into fictional events and characters
like Prabaker 'of the big smile'.[5] The Mumbai Mirror, in March 2006, reported they may
have discovered the inspiration of the big smile of the character Prabaker as belonging to a
still living cab driver called Kishore, who took Roberts to his home village. [6] Many other
major facets of the book are fictional; for example, Roberts admits that there were no
Sapna killers. [7]

Publication History

Originally Shantaram was published by Scribe Publications as a Hardcover and later as a

paperback. Following the mediated resolution in 2004 of a dispute that arose in 2003
between Scribe and the book’s author, Gregory David Roberts, rights to all forms of the
local publication of Shantaram reverted to the author after Scribe sold its remaining stock of
hardbacks.[8] Pan Macmillian then took over publication under the Picador label. [9]. There
is now a strong buyer demand for signed First Edition Hardback copies of the original Scribe
Edition.

MOVIE REVIEW

Lamhaa
DIRECTOR: Rahul Dholakia
CAST: Sanjay Dutt, Anupam Kher, Bipasha Basu, Kunal Kapoor
RATING: **

While Rahul Dholakia’s first film ‘Parzania’ brought forth with gravitas the futility ofthe
Gujarat riots of 2002, he fails to achieve the same effect with his latest film, ‘Lamhaa,’
based on the Kashmir problem. With Sanjay Dutt, Bipasha and Kunal Kapoor, essaying the
main characters in this film, Dholakia appears to have sold out to the commerce. ‘Lamhaa’
doesn’t have the regressive‘item’ number in it’s folds but it does have an incredible ‘hero’
dictating the progress ofthe narrative when it should have ideally been story driven.Sanjay
Dutt plays the typical hero figure who appears out of nowheregettinghis typical solo
softfocused entrywith musical accompaniment et al, few moments into the start of the film.

From there he goes on to establish hissuperhuman credentials byjumping across

buildings, rescuesa damsel in distress , usesfriendly diplomacy to resolve a crisis and
worksundercover to eke out intel info that the best could not manage to unearth. But
Sanjay Dutt in this case, despite all the expended screentime, is an unlikely hero.

He appears too old, too unfit, extremely sluggish and sports a body language that is just not
convincing. He is supposedly an intelligence officer sent undercover to unveil a plot meant
to sabotage the coming elections. And he is expected to prevent the terrorists, separatists,
activists, opportunists and political leaders( all are suspects) from escalating

theconflict to Jammu. Dholakia’s narrative hyper-ventilates for most of it’s run-time.

Right from the prologue- a basic history of the kashmir conflict, to the scenes of
indoctrination, foreign interference, resident dissatisfaction, abuse by armed forces and
political indecisiveness, we are treated to continuous visuals of unrest and
mayhem.Dholakia and team try to incorporate Taleban elements into the narrative but they
appear borrowed and unconvincing of the true Kashmir reality.

James Fowlds camera movements appear unnecessarily frenetic and distracting. A few of
thevisuals look stunning but theunsteady nature of the camerawork is off-putting. The
editing doesn’t allow for much coherence either. Kunal Kapoordoesn’t have the talent or the
personality to play seperatist leader Aatifwith conviction. His performance is acutely
passionless and the less said about his dialogue delivery the better.Bipasha on the other
hand manages to imbue Aziza with enough conviction to make her performance the piece-
de-resistance of the film.

Movie review : New York

MMC 206 Production Portfolio

When a hardcore commercial flick gets a standing ovation and a huge round of applause at
the end of the show, you know that there is something definitely right that the director has
done. In this regard, Kabir Khan can take a bow because he has done exceedingly well in
making a film that is not frivolous, has a message and still carries enough commercial
ingredients to reach out to masses as well as classes.

The entire sequence of events involving FBI and the round up of suspects is brilliantly
executed.
In case of "New York”Aditya Chopra doesn't shy away from showing the world what US has
become post 9/11. New York opens around 7 years after the 9/11 attacks with Omar (Neil
Mukesh) being wrongly held captive by the FBI. Investigating officer Roshan (Irrfan Khan)
offers to go easy on Omar if he agrees to spy on old-time friend Sameer (John Abraham)
who the FBI suspects to be a terrorist. With a maneuvered reunion, Omar gets entry into
Sameer’s house and tries hard to unveil his activist identity but fails every time, much to his
relief. In contrast, Sameer himself narrates his distressing past to Omar of how he was
illegally detained and brutally tortured by the FBI for 9 months, immediately after 9/11 and
victimized for being a Muslim suspect in New York.

The movie starts with an intriguing note with Omar’s attempts to infiltrate into Sameer’s
life. The ensuing chemistry between the characters keeps you riveted till the movie takes an
interesting (though palpable) twist at the interval point. The terrorism theme comes into
picture predominantly in the second half. The physical and mental abuse on innocent
Muslims, imprisoned merely on suspicion and their consequent repercussions are effectively
portrayed.

The commonplace climax where the FBI headquarters is held as the terrorist target doesn’t
go beyond Fanaa frontiers. The terrorist is terminated but the topic of terrorism it tackles
keeps long lingering. The message doesn’t come across compellingly and perhaps that’s why
the director preaches with an extended epilogue.

What one gets to see is not just America's mentality after 9/11, but also the way suspects
are detained for months and tortured in spite of lack of concrete evidence. However, to the
credit of the filmmaker, the brutality being demonstrated is pretty much under control. Even
though the desired impact is created for the audience to be a part of the lives of John
Abraham, Neil Nitin Mukesh and Katrina Kaif, nothing goes over the top or something that
cannot be swallowed.

The issue of global terrorism somewhere goes for a toss with the film turning into a human
emotional drama. More mush comes into picture as Omar confesses his campus feelings to
the married Maya (Katrina Kaif. Here he traditional Yash Raj triangle is averted. The side-
track of a frustrated Muslim driver (Nawazuddin) committing suicide doesn’t contribute to
the plot and could have been avoided.
With a subject like "New York" where one of the protagonists is labelled as a terrorist and
the other is out to prove that he isn't, the film could have become a grim drama, more so
because it deals with real issues. A strict eye is kept on the box office hence making sure
there is enough drama, thrills and emotional moments to keep audiences thoroughly
engaged in the not-so-lengthy movie.

The acting potential in john has finally been tapped by Kabir Khan and he gives his career's
best performance so far in the movie John does well in his frail characterization which could
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
have been much more convincing, intense and effective.. The scenes in the detention centre
or the film's climax surely brings a lump in your throat.

Neil has the most complex role of the three as he has to be a part of the proceedings in
spite of being on the peripherals Neil looks rehearsed in some scenes but doesn’t disappoint.
Irrfan Khan never misses any punch in his lines and is as expressive as ever. His scenes
with Irrfan Khan, who plays an FBI officer and is extremely effective once again, need a
special mention. They are extremely well written and enacted

Katrina too suits the role to a T and after "Namastey London" again gets to play a part
where she actually contributes to the film's plot. Katrina Kaif doesn’t get the meatier portion
and contributes to the sloppy effect.

All the three lead protagonists of New York are Muslims affected by the 9/11 episode in
varied ways and to different degrees. Sameer turns a scapegoat of the situation; Omar’s
identity gets him in trouble, while Roshan’s character (a Muslim investigating on terrorism)
offers that ray of hope prevailing amidst discriminating humankind.
With the kind of subject that "New York" has, it could have easily become a sermonizing or
a pseudo exercise in motion. Thankfully, Aditya Chopra, who has written the film's story,
doesn't allow that to happen. He keeps it all under check to ensure that "New York" reaches
out to the masses while also ensuring itself quite a few awards when the best of the best
are announced at the end of the year.

"New York" is a must watch!

As the last frame closes amidst the Yash Raj mascot of maple leaves, you just wish the film
had a lot more grit, the characters had a lot more depth and the treatment had a lot more
sensitivity. Alas New York fails to break new grounds on that note

“Chak Dhoom Dhoom”, the popular children’s dance reality show on Colors TV telecast its
final episode yesterday night. The Saturday night episode was perhaps the most
entertaining with the four finalists staging their best performances till date. Since only one
child could take home the trophy, it was Sparsh Shrivastav, the 11 year old kid from Agra,
who was declared the winner of “Chak Dhoom Dhoom”.

“Chak Dhoom Dhoom” has been on air in Colors television for more than three months now
and Sparsh Shrivastav had to undertake grueling lessons under the guidance of
choreographers Bosco and Caesar to reach where he did on Saturday night. Surprisingly,
Sparsh Shrivastav has had no professional training prior to taking part in the show. Though
the 11 year old Agra child is well acquainted with folk, kathak and Bollywood dancing styles,
all his training has been done under the guidance of his own mother. Sparsh Shrivastav has
emerged victorious in “Chak Dhoom Dhoom” after defeating sixteen contestants who were
present from the beginning of the reality show.

The final episode of “Chak Dhoom Dhoom” saw the children perform to a variety of dance
forms like the disco, the tango, to even the kathak and lavni. The winner of the show was
adjudged by sitting judges Saroj Khan, Ahmed Khan, Bosco and Caesar, and Pony Verma,
all of whom had been a part of the television program since the beginning of the show.
Hosted by Pravesh Rana and child star Saloni Daini, “Chak Dhoom Dhoom” saw four children
perform on the stage for the final episode. They were Piyush Bhagat from Jammu, Orissa’s
Tejaswani Behera and Gauri Ingwale from Satara, apart from Sparsh Shrivastav.

Showing: Since 2007 / Channel: Discovery / Cast: Bear Grylls

If you have never seen the show, each episode of MAN VS. WILD is based on real-life
events where people fought for their survival after finding themselves in danger in popular
wilderness locations. A seasoned adventurer and former British Special Air Service
soldier, Bear demonstrates the basic survival methods for specific locations -- including
navigation, making fire and finding water and food -- and goes one step further. As he
explains, the people who stand the best chance for survival are those who are prepared to
push the limits, and he certainly does so himself. The general format of each episode is
the premise that Grylls is left stranded in a region. The episode documents his efforts to
survive and find a way back to civilization, usually requiring an overnight shelter of some
kind. Bear also tells about successful and failed survivals in the particular area which he is
in.

Each episode takes about one week to ten days to shoot. Before each show the crew does
about a week of reconnaissance, followed by Bear Grylls doing a flyover of the terrain.
Grylls then undergoes two days of intensive survival briefings.

Bear Grylls, the British host, author, and star of Discovery Channel’s Man vs. Wild spends
his time traveling the world in search of beautiful locations, new adventures, and extreme
experiences in nature that will challenge his renowned survival techniques. For two weeks
in a row he took us to Patagonia and gave us a taste of the true ruggedness that is
manifested throughout the southern Argentine lands. Both the beauty, and ruggedness is
anything but understated in his Patagonian adventures.

Week two was just as exciting as he experienced an all new part of Patagonia, and not
just any part, but one of the most highly recommended destinations from us here at
Argentina’s Travel Guide. The infamous El Chaltén makes our list of Argentina’s Top 10
Destinations. Mountain hungry travelers with their eye on adventure head to this
destination with intentions of trekking themselves sore. El Chaltén is the trekking capital
of Argentina with the biggest challenge being Cerro Fitz Roy.

Bear’s and his crew don’t take us up the mountain, but his Patagonia adventures in
episode 2 are a great introduction to this breath-taking part of the country and will
undoubtedly inspire you to discover more about the true spirit of Patagonia and plan a
trekking adventure of your own.

you this programme to help you know that kitchen smoke is a health hazard and you need

to deal with it.

Today on the programme is Dr Obara ,MOH Kisumu Distsrict. She give you highlights on
the dangers of cooking on a smoky stove.

Cooking is central to our lives, yet the very act of cooking is a threat to children’s health
and well-being. Half of the world’s population rely on solid fuels, such as dung, wood, crop
waste or coal to meet their most basic energy needs. In most developing countries, these
fuels are burned in open fires or rudimentary stoves that give off black smoke.

When you have incomplete combustion the you have more of the harmful products of
smoke products. For example in 1kg of wood which is estimated to have 454g of carbon,
you end up with 403g CO2,3.8g methane 37.5g CO and 2g particles ( also known as
particulate matter)

Children, often carried on their mother’s back during cooking, are most exposed. The
indoor smoke inhaled gives rise to pneumonia and other respiratory infections – the
biggest killer of children under five years of age. Indoor air pollution is responsible for
nearly half of the more than 2 million deaths each year that are caused by acute
respiratory infections.

Good ventilation and improved cooking stoves can dramatically reduce children’s
exposure to smoke. Ultimately, making the transition to gas and electricity will save lives
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
and reduce the physical toll on women and children from gathering wood, freeing time for
education and development.

This problem has been largely ignored by policy-makers.

Programme Content (5mins)

In Africa, biomass has been always been used as the main source of fuel. From ages

past, people have cooked in smoky kitchens. In any given area, people are asking

themselves who they have witnessed dying from serious chest conditions; small children

for pneumonia or elderly ladies with persistent coughs and breathlessness – many of these

deaths will have been hastened (or caused) by coughs. Maybe none, or one…. or many.

Many of us may ask “Why does biomass burning produce pollutants which damage my
health?
What parts of the smoke have this effect?
What health effects do we know about – and how do they happen?

This is really surprising as:

• Wood is well known as a natural fuel
• Burning wood as a fuel is also natural.

How can it be a significant health hazard?

MMC 206 Production Portfolio
We need to understand the burning process. Wood burns properly when there is just the
right amount of air around it, and when the fire is really hot. For proper burning to take
place wood needs to be completely dry.

The better your fire burns, the less of these substances will get into your kitchen – and
the less of a health hazard it will be. However, even with a very good stove and really dry
wood, smoke will be emitted from your fire whilst it is getting hot. For this reason, you
should also think of ways of getting the smoke out of your kitchen.

When these conditions are not perfect, you get smoke – which is made up of substances
called the Products of Incomplete Combustion (PICs). There are lots of different
substances in the smoke, but the two we are going to talk about are particulates and
carbon monoxide.

Pollutants in Solid Fuel Smoke

Those of concern to us are particulate matter and Carbon monoxide.

Particulates are the tiny particles that are not visible to the naked eye, but they
accumulate in the walls of the kitchen as soot (or Oyare in dholuo ) and we feel them in
our lungs when we breathe in the smoke. Carbon monoxide is an odourless, colourless
but highly poisonous gas.

Particulates

Particulate matter is breathed in through the nose and mouth and is deposited on to the
breathing pipes and lungs – and may even reach the blood supply. This deposition is not a
one day thing ; it occurs over a period of time.
Small particles - too small to see – are the most dangerous as they get into the farthest
into the body.

Carbon monoxide

Carbon monoxide is a gas that gets into the bloodstream and reduces the ability of the
bodyto carry oxygen around the body. Carbon monoxide attaches to blood 250 times
more easily than oxygen – to form a compound called carboxy-hemoglobin. Depending on
how much carbon monoxide you have breathed in, it can take a day or more to clear it
from the blood, so if you are exposed to it every day from the fire, you can never really
get rid of it from your body.

Smoke breaks down the respiratory defenses (Suppresses the immunity system)thus with
prolonged exposure People get more exposed to various diseases.

What happens in the lungs?

When smoke is breathed in through the mouth and nose:
• A lot of mucous is produced from irritation of the airways which, over time, causes
permanent scarring of the lungs
• The particulates in the smoke stop the lungs’ self-cleaning mechanism from getting
rid of pollution, particles and germs
• They reduce the ability of the immune system in the lungs to resist infections
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
• They lead to the airways becoming constricted, especially for people with a
tendency to asthma

What happens beyond the lungs?

Very tiny particles and gases (such as carbon monoxide) get beyond the lungs and are

absorbed into the bloodstream where they can affect other organs such as the heart, and

the skeleton muscles.

All these effects can lead to serious illnesses including pneumonia, chronic bronchitis,
asthma, and even tuberculosis (TB)

Although the levels of carbon monoxide from a cooking stove rarely lead to death, you are
likely to know people who have suffered discomfort and health problems such as mild
headaches, nausea and dizziness, and maybe even severe headaches from this invisible
gas.

Conclusion

Following what I have presented to you concerning the dangerous pollutants, which are
products of biomass wood burning, you realize that smoke is hazardous to your health,
you need to do something about it to protect your health and that of your family,
particularly your small children.

Kitchen smoke in the home from cooking on wood, dung, crop waste and coal leads to the
deaths of 1.6 million people every year throughout the world.

Smoke is a silent killer - Take action now

Thank you.

Methods Of Improving Indoor Air Quality

There are three main ways of reducing indoor air pollution from cooking activities.
1. By producing less smoke: improved stoves, improved fuels and fuel switching
2. By removing smoke from indoors: chimneys, flues, hoods and ventilation
3. By reducing exposure to smoke: changes in cooking practices and behavior, and
kitchen design

1. Producing Less Smoke

Improved Stoves

In many developing countries of the world traditional cooking is usually done over a three-
stone fire. Cooking in this way can produce lots of smoke, which has health-damaging
particles and gases (including carbon monoxide) which should be minimized.
.

A well-made stove allows sufficient air to get to the wood, and the stove should be made
out of a material that does not ‘swallow’ all the heat. Mud absorbs lots of heat, but you
can mix it with other lightweight materials that let air into the mixture, and this will make
the stove more efficient. Keep the flames rubbing against the pot so that they give the pot
all their heat. This will also save you fuel.

Why use fuel at all if you can find ways of cooking without it? A fireless cooker or a solar
cooker can mean that you only have to use biomass fuel for a small part of the time.
Contact ITDG if you want to know more about these technologies.

Types of Improved Stoves

Most stoves are built with an opening for fuel that is located below a hole or place for a
cooking pot. In the Upesi stove, the heat utilization is increased by directing most of the
heat to the pot. Less heat is lost to the surroundings due to insulation. The result is a
stove which decreasing the amount of fuel needed and the time spent cooking.

Stoves like this can be made out of many materials including earth, clay, brick and
ceramic.
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
Another variation on this stove concept can be seen in the shielded fire, which a
simple three stone fire that is shielded with clay around it.

These stoves will help reduce the amount of smokeand will keep your kitchen cleaner and
safer for small children. They will also reduce the health problems related to carrying
lots of fuel and give you more time to do other things.

Improved Fuels and Fuel Switching

In considering which stove to use, another factor is the kind of fuel that can be used for
cooking. The quantity of damaging smoke particles and carbon monoxide produced
depends highly on the type of fuel used. In ranking fuels based on emissions, the worst
fuels are dung, crop wastes and charcoal. Firewood is slightly better and kerosene, gas
and electricity are the safest.
If you can afford to use cleaner fuels, consider how much time it would save for you if you
used LPG or a kerosene pressure stove and did not have to clean the soot off the outside
of the pots – or gather fuel. Do you keep cattle? – biogas is a wonderful technology which
gives you fuel to cook and good clean fertilizer for growing your crops. None of these
fuels will give off substantial amounts of harmful emissions, so your health will be
protected.

However, though emissions are an important element in choosing a fuel, they are not the
only deciding factor. Cost and availability of the fuels also needs to be considered, for
instance, LPG and kerosene pressure stoves. They have the lowest emissions For these
reasons using alternative or improved fuels is a way for you to improve indoor air quality.

2. Removing Smoke from Indoors

Chimneys, Flues, Hoods and Ventilation

Another method of improving indoor air quality is by removing the smoke produced by the
stove to the outside of the house. This removes it from the home where it can cause the
most damage. There are several ways of removing the smoke.

Chimneys and Flues

Chimney- stoves have a flue as part of the stove, allowing the smoke to exit to the
outdoors. This type of stove removes the smoke directly from the chamber where the fuel
is burning straight upwards as the flue provides a draft that draws out the smoke.
Chimney stoves` can be constructed out of clay, cement, bricks, ceramic or metal.
However, they need to be well maintained by cleaning the chimney every few weeks, or
else they can create more even more smoke than a three-stone fire; so you have to be
prepared to clean the chimney; regularly. But if they are properly designed and
maintained, chimney stoves can greatly improve indoor air quality.

Hoods
Hoods work in much the same way as chimneys and flues but they are built over the
stove. This can be a benefit because they can work with many types of stoves including
open fires while still removing a good portion of the smoke. Hoods, however, also need to
be cleaned, but this tends to less regularly than chimney stoves, and it is easier to do.
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
Ventilation
Improved ventilation can be another method of removing smoke from a home. The proper
placement of eaves spaces can allow the smoke to escape just under the roof, and
windows and doors can greatly increase the flow of air through a home and thus improve
the removal of smoke. This could be the cheapest and simplest method of removing
smoke from a home, thoughcultural feelings toward open windows and doors must be
taken into consideration.

3. Reducing Exposure to Smoke

Changes in Cooking Practices and Behaviors:
Changes in cooking practices and behaviors can reduce exposure to smoke by either
limiting the amount of time inhabitants are exposed or by setting up situations where
inhabitants are distanced from the smoke.
Ways of limiting the cooking time/exposure time include the preparation of food before
lighting the fire so that the fire is used more efficiently, pre-soaking the foods in water,
and using any insulating containers available to keep food warm. However, these may
require significant changes to cooking customs.

Changes in household cooking behavior can be effective in decreasing exposure to smoke

and can start immediately. Some of these changes can seem relatively easy, such as
simply keeping children away from the fire, though this may be difficult if the cook is also
the only available person to care for the child; sending children away could subject them
to other dangers. . There are some areas, though, that we should think hard about:
• increasing education about the harm of air pollution so that the inhabitants can
know to avoid being too close to the smoke if possible,
• better management of the cooking space to decrease time spent close to the fire
• better-informed decision making about the balance between air pollution problems
and other dangers.
• Training the cook so that she gets the most benefit from technological solutions.

Changes in Kitchen Design:

What can you do to reduce exposure is the redesign of the kitchen set up. Kitchen
redesign means that you can improve ventilation by where you site your doors, windows,
and furniture. A big kitchen is usually less smoky, because any smoke that does escape
from your fire mixes with lots more air, so the smoke is not so concentrated. If you place
your stove near a window, make sure that you can close the window so that if the wind
blows the smoke around, you can stop this happening.
If you put your stove against a wall instead of in the middle of the room, it is easier to
contain the smoke using a smoke hood or by installing eaves spaces. It also means that
children are less likely to fall into it and get burnt. Another redesign that can drastically
reduce exposure is to locate the kitchen in a separate room – but remember that the cook
will still be breathing in the smoke if she is working in there. However, if the stove is kept
alight at night, remember that children who sleep in the same room can be affected by
smoke.

CARL AZUZ, CNN STUDENT NEWS ANCHOR: We are kicking off a brand new Thursday
edition of CNN Student News. Glad to have you with us. From the CNN Center, I'm Carl
Azuz.

First Up: Race for Delegates

AZUZ: The votes are in, the polls are closed and Pennsylvania is in the rearview mirror.
But before we leave the Keystone State, let's break down the results of this week's
primaries and see how they affected the overall race for the White House. Hillary Clinton
came out ahead for the Democrats. She rode the wave of momentum all the way to
Indiana, which is hosting the next round of presidential contests. But Clinton is still trailing
in the all-important delegate count. Barack Obama leads there with 1,719 delegates to
Clinton's 1,586. It takes 2,025 to win the party's nomination. As for the Republicans, John
McCain won the Pennsylvania primary and is currently campaigning across the country.
And delegates? Done! McCain wrapped up his party's nomination earlier this year. His
sights are now set on the general election.

League of First Time Voters

AZUZ: Every time an election rolls around, whether it's a presidential primary or a regional
referendum, a new group of voters gets the chance to cast ballots. It's not an exclusive
club. All you have to do is turn 18 and register. That's how you join the League of First
Time Voters. Rick Sanchez sat down to talk with some of this year's new members.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

RICK SANCHEZ, CNN REPORTER: You guys are the first ones to talk to me about health
care and say, "This is a priority. This is important for this country." Why is that?

FIRST-TIME VOTER: I've grown up the majority of my life without health insurance, so I
know how costly it is to go to the doctor, to go to the hospital and not have any backup.
You never want to see somebody get rejected or think they shouldn't go to the hospital
because they can't afford it. I think that's inhumane.

SANCHEZ: She calls it "universal healthcare." Republicans say it's "socialized medicine." Is
that a fair criticism?

FIRST-TIME VOTER: I think there are certain situations where government should step in
and put in certain programs that are gonna help overall. You need some kind of overall...

SANCHEZ: So, you think the government should be relied on to do some of these things?

FIRST-TIME VOTER: Yes.

SANCHEZ: Just to do it better?

FIRST-TIME VOTER: Yeah.

SANCHEZ: (to others) Agree?

FIRST-TIME VOTER: I think it goes beyond government. If we're a community, if this

country is everything that we say it is, I think it's our responsibility, our civic duty, to take
care of one another.

FIRST-TIME VOTER: I live, like, 20 minutes out of Scranton, and it's just so poor. There
are so many people who are not covered and who can't go to the hospital like Steph is
saying. They can't live up to their potential because they don't have insurance or because
the school systems are so poor around here.

FIRST-TIME VOTER: I think there's a difference between taking a socialist idea and
working with it, as opposed to taking socialism and putting it into the country. And I think
that's the core difference between what Hillary's doing and what Barack is planning on
doing, and what people are saying they are doing.

SANCHEZ: We're looking like we're gonna be spending something like a trillion dollars in
Iraq. Money well spent? Raise your hand if you think we ought not to have gone into Iraq,
that it was a mistake? (4 raise hands)
MMC 206 Production Portfolio

FIRST-TIME VOTER: If we were to pull all of our troops out and take them home, I feel
that would be more disastrous.

SANCHEZ: You guys believe this country needs change.

FIRST-TIME VOTER: We shouldn't be at war, and John McCain is going to keep our troops
at war.

SANCHEZ: What makes you think that Hillary or Barack Obama will be any better?

FIRST-TIME VOTER: He doesn't talk about his policies. He just talks about how everything
needs to be changed.

FIRST-TIME VOTER: The young American public is getting really caught up in his campaign
because all he speaks of is change. They hear him speak and they're like, "Yes, change.
Change." But they don't really know what he wants to change.

FIRST-TIME VOTER: Right. He's a good speaker. Words come out of his mouth and people
like to hear them. They don't think about the implications of what those words mean,
though.

SANCHEZ: Do you believe the next president of the United States will be a Democrat?
Raise your hands. (5 raise hands) All but one. Thanks, ladies.

Is This Legit?

GEORGE RAMSAY, CNN STUDENT NEWS: Is this Legit? In 1971, the 25th Amendment to
the U.S. Constitution gave 18-year-olds the right to vote. Right year, wrong amendment.
The 26th Amendment lowered the voting age to 18. The 25th Amendment actually deals
with presidential succession.

Today's Headlines

AZUZ: Now, on to some more headlines this Thursday. Defense Secretary Robert Gates
says he wants General David Petraeus to start moving on up to take over U.S. Central
Command! Petraeus is currently serving as the top U.S. commander in Iraq. If the Senate
approves the new assignment, his responsibility will expand to include nearly 30 countries.
Secretary Gates is asking the Senate to sign off on the move by Memorial Day.

A three-person crew of international astronauts is safely back on Earth. But they faced
some serious danger on the trip home from space. Check this out: The Russian capsule
they were flying in entered the atmosphere facing the wrong direction! To make matters
worse, it landed about 260 miles off-target. Amazingly, no one was hurt in this wreckage,
but officials are checking into what went wrong.

Up in the sky. It's a bird, it's a plane, it's... What is it? That's what some Phoenix-area
residents were asking when they spotted these red lights earlier this week. But the truth is
MMC 206 Production Portfolio

out there. One man claims he's the cause. He says he attached road flares to balloons to
create the eerie effect. We're guessing, just for the heck of it.

Ri$ing Food Co$t$

AZUZ: All right, let's turn our attention to the economy, where some important numbers
are heading in opposite directions. Oil and gas prices are up, and the dollar is down. That
adds up to tough economic times. Another addition to the "up" side of the equation: food
costs. Ali Velshi explains why those are on the rise.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

ALI VELSHI, CNN REPORTER: As the housing market continues its plunge and stock
markets gyrate, one market, the market for commodity futures, stays red hot. In the past
year alone, corn futures have spiked more than 60 percent, soybeans over 90 percent and
rice has more than doubled. Hedge funds and other pools of big money are pouring
billions into commodities. They want a better return than real estate, the stock markets or
the U.S. dollar can give them. Why do you care? Because this speculative fever is finding
its way here: to the checkout line.

LAKSHMAN ACHUTHAN, ECONOMIC CYCLE RESEARCH INSTITUTE: When we get the

momentum in a market going one way, smart people can make money doing that. And
that is what their job is. What is happening now is that this is showing up and impacting,
you know, people very much on Main Street and on their dinner tables.

VELSHI: Now, to be fair, these high prices aren't just caused by speculators. Bad weather
has caused the price of food grains to spike. And growing demand from emerging markets
like China and India and the weak U.S. dollar is also playing a part. But as futures markets
rally, companies that buy crops to make food must swallow higher prices to guarantee
future delivery of the raw goods that they need. And that's driving prices even higher.

KENDELL KEITH, NATIONAL GRAIN AND FEED ASSOCIATION: It ultimately adds to the
cost in the marketplace of merchandizing and marketing grain.

VELSHI: Bottom line: At least some of the price boom appears divorced from the laws of
supply and demand. Proof, say some economists: Easily traded commodities like corn and
wheat are showing historic gains, while commodities that are not widely traded, like
rubber and burlap, are up by a much smaller amount. Others say that connection is
tougher to make.

VIC LESPINASSE, GRAINANALYST.COM: It's very difficult to say exactly how big of a role
speculation has played. I think it is relatively minor. The speculators are not setting the
trend, they're just following the trend.

VELSHI: Traders say the fundamentals play a much bigger role than speculation. Drought
in wheat-growing Australia, for instance. And they say don't forget higher oil and gas
prices that make it more expensive to produce and transport food. Now, you'd think
farmers here in the U.S. would be happy about these high prices, but even some of them
MMC 206 Production Portfolio

are complaining that all of this speculation has thrown the whole market out of whack.
They say they're not feeling the full benefit of the price increases, and they're asking the
U.S. government to somehow limit speculation in food markets. Easier said than done. But
speculation in commodity markets is provoking "food rage."

ACHUTHAN: When you have, you know, your milk price double or your bread double or
something like that because of some financial gyrations, and you say something is wrong
here. And I think that's what people are really reacting to and are feeling right now.

VELSHI: It may be wrong to some, but a global market is a hard thing to stop. Ali Velshi,
CNN, New York.

supply and demand. These are the keys to determining price. Supply is the amount of a

consumers are willing to purchase at a certain price.

BOBST VISIONFOIL PROVIDES ULTRAPRECISE HOLOGRAM APPLICATION

MMC 206 Production Portfolio
The newly launched visonfoil is dedicated to Hologram Industry

New Delhi: HOMAI, the leading supplier of equipment and services for the folding carton,
corrugated board and flexible materials industries has recently launched a version of its
VISIONFOIL press, dedicated to security hologram application.

As more and more industries look for solutions to protect the authenticity of their
products, holographic materials offer an ideal solution, helping its brand owners make a
clear difference between originals and forgeries, deterring counterfeiters. However
reproducing holograms, and placing them accurately on the product, require specialized
equipment. Until 2010, the reference machine for flat-to-flat hologram application on
paper, labels, or board has been the BOBST SP 76-BM Foilmaster. Now HOMAI has
introduced the VISIONFOIL 104 H to deliver hologram application of utmost
accuracy.

The VISIONFOIL 104 H uses BOBST’s patented, high precision Registron cameras to bring
each hologram on the sheet into perfect register, be they 2-D, 2-D/2-D, 3-D, 2-D/3-D, or
multiplexed. The same cameras process diffraction foils, skipping the unusable shim line
areas. All current sizes of holograms can be processed using the VISIONFOIL 104 H. The
smooth foil path created by the specially designed internal foil unwind module, enables
high precision foil handling and better productivity. The cameras are auto-setting,
reducing make-ready time. Up to six independently driven advance shafts, increase
flexibility and cut down on foil waste. The platen entry easily handles light materials which
make up the majority of security print jobs.
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
Alongside its hologram application capabilities, the VISIONFOIL 104 H is highly flexible,
being able to apply conventional as well as holographic foil. The press shares with the rest
of the VISIONFOIL 104 range a maximum running speed of 7,500 sheets per hour, along
with the ability to run paper and labels down to 80 gsm, carton board to 2000 gsm, and
corrugated sheets up to 4 mm in thickness. The maximum sheet size the VISIONFOIL 104
H can handle is 1040x740 mm.

The VISIONFOIL 104 H is ideal for banknote printers applying holograms and/or metal
stripes; software packaging manufacturers applying seals to CD/DVD cases; ticket printers
producing concert, event and sporting event tickets, tobacco industry suppliers and other
industries trying to protect their products.

FASTER ON LINE HOLOGRAM REGISTRATION FOLLOWING IHMA MOVE

New improved Hologram Image Register
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
Hologram producers can now protect their designs more quickly and easily following
improvements to the International Hologram Manufacturers Association’s (IHMA)
Hologram Image Register (HIR).

The IHMA represents 90 of the world’s leading hologram producers. The highly secure
HIR, established in 1993 and now merged with the Hologram Manufacturers of India’s
(HoMAI) Hologram Roster, is the only database of hologram images in the world. It was
established in 1993 to help prevent IHMA members from mistakenly copying an existing
hologram design already issued in another part of the world.

The Register underpins the use of holograms for authentication by enabling members to
see if a proposed hologram design, as requested by customers, infringes existing designs.
In doing so, it can unearth suspected attempts to source counterfeits. The IHMA claims
that it is the only database of a security or authentication feature in use by suppliers of
such features. And because the date of first registration of a new hologram is recorded on
the Register, it also supports the copyright in that image.

Suspected counterfeit holograms can also be compared against genuine ones stored within
the Register and, if found to be fake, the producers and customers of the originals can be
notified and action taken. The hologram search and register forms have been merged by
the IHMA into one easy-to-use, streamlined web browser-based new Hologram Proposal
Form which producers can use to make rapid online submissions. This features check
boxes and drop-down menus to aid application and improved registration.

Merger with the Hologram Image Roster ensures that a search of the HIR will avoid the
risk of failing to spot a match with a hologram produced in India, which has a large
domestic hologram industry. Holograms registered on the HoMAI database can be re-
registered on the HIR

The registration service is now free and will be included as part of IHMA membership. The
HIR database is kept off-line to maintain the highest levels of security and is operated by
the Counterfeiting Intelligence Bureau of the Commercial Crime Services division of the
International Chamber of Commerce. Only authorised staff at the CIB have access – the
HIR operation is totally confidential between these and the IHMA member registering
holograms.
MMC 206 Production Portfolio
The success of the HIR has been proven over the years, and a growing number of
customers commissioning secure holograms require them to be registered on the HIR.
Several attempts to make counterfeit holograms have failed because the HIR
demonstrated the hologram was already being produced by an IHMA member.

Equally, there have been cases of fake holograms reported to the HIR which has then
proved useful in demonstrating that they were counterfeit. This has then led to
prosecutions and the counterfeiters punished. Further information about the HIR can be
found at www.ihma.org
