Materials: Cutting:
2-7/8 yards of a red solid From the red solid:
3-1/4 yards of a white solid (11) 4-1/4" x 42" strips
3/4 yard of a red print for binding (2) 15-1/2" x 42" strips
5-1/4 yards of backing fabric (9) owl bodies
80" x 92" piece of batting (3) noses
Fusible web (6) feet
Black embroidery floss (6) eyes

From the white solid:


(9) 13-1/2" x 16-1/2" rectangles
(4) 9-1/2" x 42" strips
(2) 6-1/2" x 42" strips
(3) owl bodies
(9) noses
(18) feet
(18) eyes

From the red print for binding:


(9) 2-1/4" x 42" strips

Preparation:
(Note: Patterns and instructions are given using the fusible appliqu method. See General Directions for
needle-turn method and add seam allowance to patterns.)

Trace 12 owl bodies, 12 noses, 24 feet and 24 eyes onto the paper side of the fusible web, leaving at least 1/2"
space between each piece. Cut out the pieces 1/4" beyond the drawn lines. Following manufacturer's
instructions, iron the pieces to the wrong side of the designated fabrics. Cut out each piece on the drawn line.
Sewing:
Making the Appliqud Blocks

1. Center 1 red owl body, 1 white nose, 2 white feet, and 2 white eyes on (1) 13-1/2"
x 16-1/2" white rectangle as shown.

2. Following manufacturer's instructions, fuse the pieces in place. Appliqu each


piece using a blanket stitch or a small zigzag stitch to secure.

3. Using the black embroidery floss, sew a satin stitch to fill in the dashed circle inside
each eye. (Make 9 blocks.)

Assembling the Quilt

1. Sew the (11) 4-1/4" x 42" red strips together to


make a long strip. Crosscut the long strip into
(12) 16-1/2" strips and (4) 54-1/2" strips.

2. Sew (4) 16-1/2" red strips, alternating with 3


blocks to make a block row. (Make 3 rows.)

3. Sew the (4) 54-1/2" red strips, alternating with


the 3 block rows to complete the quilt top.

Borders

1. Stitch the (4) 9-1/2" x 42" white strips together to


make a long strip. Crosscut the long strip into
(2) 63-1/2" strips. Sew to the sides of the quilt.

2. Stitch the (2) 6-1/2" x 42" white strips together to


make a long strip. Crosscut the long strip into
(1) 72-1/2" strip. Sew to the bottom of the quilt.

3. Stitch the (2) 15-1/2" x 42" red strips together to


make a long strip. Crosscut the long strip into
(1) 72-1/2" strip. Sew to the top of the quilt.

4. Center 1 white owl body, 1 red nose, 2 red feet, and 2 red eyes above each vertical block row as shown.

5. Fuse the pieces in place. Appliqu each piece using a blanket stitch or a small zigzag stitch to secure.

6. Using the black embroidery floss, sew a satin stitch to fill in the dashed circle inside each eye.

Finishing

Refer to the General Directions for backing, quilting, and binding; use the 2-1/4" x 42" red print strips to bind
the quilt.
