MUSIC 578 ANALYSIS AND STYLE SURVEY

Guidelines and Practice for Competency Quiz 4, Fall 2017


Purpose of the quiz: This quiz evaluates your understanding of and facility with
twentieth-century musical techniques and consists of five sections as outlined
below:

PART A. Scales and collections. Write out the requested scales or collections,
using the given note as the tonic or final. (3 4 questions)
PART B. Neo-Riemannian theory. Identify the PLR (or S) transformation given
two chords, and provide the second chord that could complete the specified neo-
Riemannian transformation. (3 4 questions)
PART C. Interval-class vector identification. Provide the interval vector for given
pitch-class sets. (3 4 questions)
PART D. Prime form identification. Provide the prime form designation for given
pitch-class sets. (3 4 questions)
PART E. Transpose the indicated pitch-class sets by Tn. (3 4 questions)

Date of quiz: This quiz is scheduled for Tuesday, November 21 (during class)
unless otherwise noted. You will have exactly 30 minutes to complete the quiz. If
you plan to be out of town for early Thanksgiving break you may take it sooner by
appointment.
Competency Policy: Credit for MUS 578 is contingent upon passing each of the
competency quizzes with a grade of 80% or better. If the 80% minimum on any of
the quizzes is not attained, a failing grade will be recorded for MUS 578. There
will be the opportunity for up to two re-takes for each of the quizzes.
How to study: Ive attached a practice quiz to this study guide to give you an
idea of the types of questions and format of the quiz. The quiz itself will closely
resemble this practice version, with different specific intervals, scales/collections,
sets, etc.
