AmonganumberofPWMtechniques,thesinusoidalPWMiscommon.SinusoidalPWMisatypeofcarrierbased
pulsewidthmodulation.CarrierbasedPWMusespredefinedmodulationsignalstodetermineoutputvoltages.In
sinusoidalPWM,themodulationsignalissinusoidal,withthepeakofthemodulatingsignalalwayslessthanthe
peakofthecarriersignal.

Itisillustratedinthefollowingfigureforonephaseonly.

Thestatorsinusoidalreferencephasevoltagesignaliscomparedwithahighfrequencycarrierwave,andthe
comparatorlogicoutputcontrolsswitchingoftheupperandlowertransistorsinaphaseleg.

Thephasevoltagewaveshownreferstothefictitiouscentertapofthefiltercapacitor.

WiththePWMtechnique,thefundamentalvoltageandfrequencycanbeeasilyvaried.

AmplitudeModulationDepth:Theamplitudemodulationdepth,maisdefinedusingtheratioofpeakmodulation
andcarriersignalsasfollows

Availableoutputvoltage:AssumingthattheDCvoltageiscreatedusingadioderectifier
andcapacitordclink,themaximumavailableDCvoltageisgivenby

(ma=1)is

i.e.asinusoidalPWMdrivecannotproducealinelineoutputvoltageashighastheline
supply.Oneoptiontomitigatethisdiscrepancyistousehighersupplyvoltages(e.g.480V
supply,460Vmotor600Vsupply,575Vmotor).

Shortpulses:IftheoutputistobetrulysinusoidalPWM,itisimportantto
includeverysmallpulseswhenthepeakmodulationsignalisclosetothepeak
carriervoltage.Thesesmallpulsescancontributesignificantlytoinverter
losses,whilenotsignificantlyeffectingtheoutputvoltage.Inaddition,smallpulsesmaybeimpracticalduetothe
timerequiredtoswitchonedeviceoffandanotherdeviceon.Mostindustrialdrivesdropsmallpulsestoimprove
efficiency.
