COVER LETTER

Dear Madam/Sir,

I am addressing this letter, to apply for the Internship Programme advertised in your
website. Following my Marketing Officer role at London based architectural firm I am
eager to pursue my career in the art business, which is in line with my academic
background and professional aspirations. I am motivated to build a career in auction
houses to assist in your sales with a professional approach. I believe your dynamic
environment will qualify me to fulfil this aim with set of competencies positioning me as
a strong candidate.

Conducting my researches on your reputable institution, I concluded that this role is the
best match my profile. Your company pictured me your success across the sector where
you actively manage prestigious and sustaining sales. Your performance through more
than hundred years explains how solid your strategy is. This feature is a particular driver
of my interest. I am further impressed by your record breaking sales, such as the
Impressionist & Modern Art Evening Sale (June 2016) with Picassos Femme assise and
Amedeo Modiglianis Jeanne Hbuterne (au foulard). Finally, the way you incorporate the
international philosophy to your operations inspires me to be a part of Sothebys where I
can discover the most of my potential with an opportunity to make extensive use of my
theoretical knowledge in art history and experience in both curating & marketing.

My studies and designer engagements exposed me to a number of projects and equipped

me with organisational, project management and teamwork skills. Holding a BA in art
history from Paris-Sorbonne University and MSc degree at the University of Edinburgh, I
specialised in modern and contemporary art. My research project on gendered reading of
Arthur Rackhams oeuvre thought me about the complex relationship between artwork
and its spectatorship. I also curated a physical exhibition during my internship at the
Edinburgh Central Library, for which I crafted an ambitious display. Understanding the
needs of non-specialist readership in the library was a crucial criterion for me to build
this experience for the library accordingly. I also marketed the exhibition online and
reached out to a professional pianist to incorporate the prelude that inspired one of the
illustration from the rare book displayed in my exhibition. These crucial experiences
brought me to my current job in London. Through this experience, I forged great
relationships with the managers of our client Berkeley Homes and subcontractors, like
Schuco and Reynaers. I also performed multiple administrative tasks within our office and
supervised an office assistant and a web designer, which further strengthened my self-
confidence and communicative skills. I consider myself flexible and motivated person
with adaptability to international environments, skills that would make my best
contribution to Sothebys. At the same time, I keen to improve constantly with your long
run expertise in the industry.

I would welcome an opportunity to discuss my qualifications with you and learn more
about your company and underlying division. I look forward to receive your response.

Yours sincerely,

Cansin Gursoy
