Section Four: Alignment to Curriculum & Professional Standards

Introduction

Our students deserve to be taught in a way that prepares them for their adult career.

Todays New State Standards and other educational standards do just that. They ensure are

students are being taught content in effective manner that adheres to learning and ethical

standards. As educators and parents, we need to recognize that our children are tomorrows

future doctors, electricians, politicians, and many other professionals. It is my job as educator to

teach accordingly to the following standards: NYS INTASC Standards; NYS Code of Ethics for

Teachers; P-12 NYS Common Core Learning Standards; International Literacy Association

(ILA) Professional Standards; and, DOE Claims & CAEP Standards. Each standard address

significant rules, research, and guidelines that I will follow as an educator.

Curriculum & Professional Educational Standards

INTASC Standards.

The INTASC Standards are benchmarks for teachers that helps ensure students are

getting the proper education. Furthermore, these goals show how a teacher should be conducting

their classrooms in way the allows each student to work to their full potential. The four different

categories allow the teacher to see the different teaching competencies needed for their

classroom. The categories are: The Learner and Learning, Content, Instructional Practice, and

Professional Responsibility. Each category contains specific standards that apply. The eight

artifacts I have provided in Section 3, are applicable to INSTAC standards.

NYS Code of Ethics for Educators.

As an educator, it is essential that a candidate has the integrity to treat every student

equally and with care. The New York State Code of Ethics for Educators are standards that
teacher adheres. There are six principles that outline how an educator should treat their students,

learning environments, other educators, and the community. It is important that an educator

observes these ethically guidelines so that students feel safe and welcomed.

Within my artifacts, I have connected them to the NYS Code of Ethics principles. They

are diverse in ethical content. In the lesson plans artifacts, I have carefully examined these

principles and applied them to my planning and assessment. As a current educator, I work with

collages to help maintain these principles in our classrooms.

P-12 NYS Common Core Learning Standards (ELA, Math and Social Studies).

The Common Core Learning Standards are research based requirements that educators

align their lesson plans to. There are specific tasks and benchmarks throughout the ELA, Math,

and Social Studies Standards. As an educator, is important that I understand how to read and

apply these standards. Common Core is made to help our students succeeded. However, this

cannot be done unless I utilize the standards in each of my lesson plans.

Six of my artifacts have been properly connected to the NYS Common Core Learning

Standards. I have designed lesson plans in direct correlation to NYS ELA, Math, and Science

Standards. These artifacts show that I can teach my students according to the NYS Common

Core Standards.

DOE Claims & CAEP Standards.

The DOE Claims & CAEP Standards demonstrate my abilities as graduate education

student. Each artifact demonstrates my teaching competencies and passion for the field of

education. In addition to, I acknowledge that there is always room for growth as an educator.
This is evident in my ongoing professional development that I will continue throughout my

career.

International Society for Technology Education for Teachers and Students (ISTE).

As a millennial, technology in the classroom has been a huge influence. However,

technology is always changing and advancing. It is my responsibility to keep up to date with new

technological advanced within the classroom to keep my students engaged. Also, when using

technology in the classroom, I must be able to know when and what type of technology to use. In

few of my artifacts, they have aligned with ISTC Standards. These standards keep me as an

educator aware of how to apply technology within the classroom.

International Literacy Association (ILA) Professional Standards.

Children having a strong background in literacy is essential. Literacy is used in Math,

Science, ELA, and Social Studies. Therefore, having enriched literacy classroom is important for

the growth of our students. The ILA Professional Standards outlines how we can apply literacy

rich environments for our students. The six standards stated in ILA are: Standard 1: Foundational

Knowledge; Standard 2: Curriculum and Instruction; Standard 3: Assessment and Evaluation;

Standard 4: Diversity; Standard 5: Literate Environment; Standard 6: Professional Learning and

Leadership.

In the artifacts I have provided I have followed the ILA Standards. The lesson plans I

wrote use literacy rich research based information. The chart describes in detail what specific

standards I used for each lesson. The ILA and my educational career at Medaille has taught me

the significance of literacy within the classroom.

Council for Exceptional Children (ECE).

Our classrooms are going to be full of diverse students. Some of my students may have

learning disabilities such ADHD or Autism. As an educator, it is my duty to be able to have

lesson that plans and other classroom management strategies that accommodate all students.

Many of artifacts have a heavy focus on students with disabilities. I have developed lessons plans

that will ensure the success of all my students. To do so I have followed ECE Standards when

developing my lesson plans. In addition to, my artifacts are contributed to research and advocacy

for those students with disabilities.

Conclusion

The eight Standards addressed in this section explain my knowledge of state laws,

teaching competencies, and teaching pedagogy. The artifacts I have provided are evidence of my

abilities of developing and understanding of the standards discussed. Lesson plans that link to

NYS Common Core content area and NYS Learning Standards show that I am adaptive and

creative when designing lessons. In my artifacts there is a heavy focus in being a caring and

empathic educator for my students. This aligns with the ethical standards that were deliberated

above. Although, as stated I will continue to follow these standards throughout my teaching

career in hopes of being the best educator I can be for my students.
