1. (a). Sketch output voltage waveform for a 3-phase semi-converter for firing angle delay of 60.
(b).List the applications of controlled rectifiers.
(c). Sketch load voltage and current waveforms with source inductance Ls for single phase full
converter.
(d). Give the comparison between circulating and non-circulating current modes of dual
converter.
(e).List various techniques to improve power factor.

2. A 3-phase full-wave converter is operates from a 3-phase star connected 208V/50 Hz supply
and the load resistance is R=10.If it is required to obtain an average output voltage of 50% of
the maximum possible output voltage determine,(i)firing angle(ii)RMS and average value of
output currents(iii)average and rms thyristor currents(iv)rectification efficiency(v)transformer
utilization factor(vi)input power factor.

[Ans:=60(ii)15.93A,14.04A(iii)4.68A,9.197A(iv)77.67%(v)42.1%(vi)0.78]

3. A single phase full converter is connected to ac supply of 330 sin 314t volt. It operates with a
firing angle =/4 rad. The total load current is maintained constant at 5A and the load
voltage is 140V.calculate the source inductance, angle of overlap and the load resistance.
[Ans:17.113mH,6.267,28]

4. Derive an expression for output voltage of the 3-phase full converter as influenced by source
inductance.

5. Explain the operation of circulating current type single phase dual converter with help of neat
diagram and waveforms. Derive an expression for circulating current.

6. A 3-phase circulating current dual converter is fed from 400 V, 3-, 50Hz ac supply. The peak
value of circulating current is 42 A. If firing angle is zero, find the inductance of reactor.
[Ans:0.037H]
