EXPERIMENT-5
INDEPENDENT SAMPLES t-TEST
The following data represents the marks of two sections, i.e. A and B for different subjects. The
data is given as below:
HYPOTHESIS:
Where 1 and 2 are the population means for group 1 and group 2 respectively

THEORY:
The independent-samples t-test compares the means between two unrelated groups on the same
continuous, dependent variable. The Independent Sample t-Test compares the means of two
independent groups in order to determine whether there is statistical evidence that the associated
population means are significantly different.
The Independent Samples t Test is a parametric test.
The independent samples t-test is also called unpaired t-test.
It is the t-test to use when two separate independent and identically distributed variables are
measured.
Independent samples are easiest obtained when selecting the participants by random
sampling.
Assumptions:
Dependent variable should be measured on a continuous scale (i.e., it is measured at
the interval or ratio level).
Independent variable should consist of two categorical, independent groups.
There should have independence of observations, which means that there is no relationship
between the observations in each group or between the groups themselves.
There needs to be homogeneity of variances.

PROCEDURE:
STEP 1: Click on analyze, then go to compare means and then click independent samples t-Test.

STEP 3: Select the dependent variable from the left window pane and then click the top arrow
button to move the variables over to the Test Variable(s).
STEP 4: Click on the define groups button the Define Groups dialogue box is opened, as shown
below. Enter "1" into the Group 1: box and enter "2" into the Group 2: box. Remember that we
labeled the section A group as 1 and the section B group as 2.

STEP 6: If any need to change the confidence level limits or changes how to exclude cases, click
the option button. Click the continue button. You will be returned to the Independent-Samples T
Test dialogue box.
OUTPUT:
CONCLUSION:
Since p= .130 which is greater than 0.05 thus we can accept the null hypothesis which states that
there is a no difference between marks of section A and section B.
