The intersection design for the four way stop at Martin Jischke Drive and Third street

needs to be redesigned. Since so many pedestrians cross this street, drivers are forced to spend an
excessive amount of time at the intersection compared to the average time for four way stops.
People crossing this intersection are also in danger as they pass, since four way stops are proven
to be dangerous. The objective of this proposal is to explain to the board that installing a
roundabout and four pedestrian bridges is the best solution to solve the problem with this
intersection. The solution should be implemented and renovated as soon as it is feasible, and
causes the least amount of additional traffic. The roundabout would decrease traffic, improve
safety for the drivers, and the pedestrian bridges would increase safety for walkers, bicyclists,
and skaters alike. Drivers and pedestrians alike would also both benefit greatly from this
intersection becoming faster to navigate through. Studies have proven that four way stops are not
only inefficient for heavy traffic, but are also more dangerous. The alternative thinking to put in
stop lights, have also been proven to be less effective than the roundabout, and will be
discredited in this proposal. The roundabout would increase the efficiency of the overall traffic
flow of the campus. Purdue throughout the years has been at the cutting edge of engineering. Its
ability to stay well above the competition is what keeps the university so prestigious. As a
campus that also prides itself on being safe, Purdue should look to improve in this location on
campus that is often one of the most congested. The proposal would keep Purdue at the cutting
edge of engineering, as well as improving the safety of everyone. The redesigning of the
intersection is of the upmost importance for travelers, and for Purdues status of being ahead of
the game.
