JOURNAL REPORT

About the Activity

At the end of the research activity, the student/s will be able to report to class scientific
journals with objectives related to thermodynamics, chemical kinetics, chemical equilibrium,
and/or electrochemistry.
The research activity will be done in groups. Each group shall be given a scientific journal
to review and discuss in front of the class. On the day of presentation, each group shall be
given at most 30 minutes to present their journal review to the class. After such, at most 15
minutes shall be given to entertain questions from the audience.

Guide Questions
An effective journal report enables its audience to understand the concept behind and
significance of the study, to analyze the implications of the result, and to assess the success
and limitations of the study. The following questions aim to help the students create a
coherent and complete journal report.

ABP-Cu
1. What is/are the current challenge/s in quantifying or analyzing alendronate?
2. What chemical property of alendronate was investigated in the study?
3. What are the objectives (general and/or specific) of the study?
4. Summarize the research procedure. Rationalize the use of major
techniques/reagents.
5. Discuss the implications of all of the figures presented on the journal.
6. What can be concluded from the study?
7. What are the strengths and limitations of the study?

H2O2
1. Why did the study focus on decomposition of H2O2 and use of geothite?
2. What are the objectives (general and/or specific) of the study?
3. Summarize the research procedure. Rationalize the use of major
techniques/reagents.
4. Discuss the implications of kinetic results to the decomposition of H2O2 using geothite.
5. What is the role of iron oxide in the decomposition of H2O2?
6. Compare the effects of using geothite and iron oxide to the decomposition of H2O2.
7. Based on the calculated activation energy, what process/es dominate the apparent
reaction rate?
8. Discuss how the proposed reaction mechanism was consistent with the kinetic
measurements.
9. What can be concluded from the study?
10. What are the strengths and limitations of the study?
Uric Acid
1. What is the chemical basis of/reaction behind uric acid determination in the study?
2. Why is uric acid determination important?
3. What are the objectives (general and/or specific) of the study?
4. Summarize the research procedure. Rationalize the use of major
techniques/reagents.
5. Why should secondary standard of uric acid be prepared?
6. How is the wavelength of maximum absorption selected?
7. How do pH and reaction time affect absorbance measurements and quantification of
uric acid?
8. Justify the probable cause of deviations from Beers Law.
9. Using experimental results, explain why cyanide solutions should be freshly prepared
and sample solutions should be analyzed as soon as possible.
10. How is the solubility of uric acid determined?
11. What factors are being studied that could affect the solubility of uric acid? Discuss
their implications.
12. What can be concluded from the study?
13. What are the strengths and limitations of the study?

Rubrics
At the end of the activity, the group will be graded according to the rubrics shown below.
The final grade of the group will be 60% from the instructors grade and 40% from the class
grade.
