SPIDERMAN: HOMECOMING MOVIE REVIEW

Introduction

SpiderMan : Homecoming is 2017 American superhero movie based on the Marvel Comics character
SpiderMan, co-produced by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studio and distributed by Sony Pictures
Releasing. This movie was released on 28 June 2017. It is the second Spider-Man film reboot and the
sixteenth film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film is directed by Jon Watts. Tom Holland
stars as Spider-Man, alongside Michael Keaton, Jon Favreau, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Tyne Daly, Marisa
Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, Peter Parker tries to balance high school life
with being Spider-Man, while facing the Vulture. The budget for the movie is to be estimated over $175
million and the running time is 133 minutes.

Homecoming has grossed over $880 million worldwide, making it the second most successful Spider-
Man film and the fourth highest-grossing film of 2017. It received positive reviews, with critics praising
Holland and the other cast's performances, the light tone and the action sequences. A sequel is
scheduled to be released on July 5, 2019.

Summary

Spiderman: Homecoming starts off with a young Peter Parker navigating his newfound identity as the
web-slinging super hero Spiderman. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home
where he lives with his Aunt May, under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark. Peter tries to
fall back into his normal daily routine as he is distracted by the thoughts of proving himself to be more
than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and to have a spot on the Avengers. So while Peter
preps for an academic decathlon competition with his best friend Ned and pines for his crush Liz, he also
begins to investigate a rash of crimes involving high-tech weapons. The trail leads to a crooked salvage
crew led by the ruthless Adrian Toomes, who uses stolen alien technology to create advanced guns and
gadgets he sells on the black market (and uses to build a super-cool wing suit that makes him the
Vulture). Peter tries to get Tony to take him and the Vultures threat seriously. When they refuse, its up
to him to stop the villains, as he struggles to balance his life between a superhero and an average
teenager.

Creative elements of the movie

1. Dialogues
Most dialogues in the movie brings a lot of comedic effect towards the storyline and it really
manage to keep an entertaining vibe throughout the whole movie. For example, one of the
dialogue between Tony and Peter which reflects their individual personalities and how their
traits and thoughts clash with each other that creates an awkward yet comical moment.
(Dialogue 1.1)

Peter Parker: [in a car with Tony] So, to become an Avenger, is there like trials or an interview?
Tony Stark: Just don't do anything I WOULD do.
[Peter nods]
Tony Stark: And definitely don't do anything I wouldn't do.
[Peter looks confused]
 Tony Stark: There's a little gray area in there and that's where you operate.
Peter Parker: Oh...
Tony Stark: Alright?
[reaches across Peter with his arm; Peter wraps his arms around him]
Tony Stark: That's not a hug, I'm just grabbing the door for you.
[opens Peter's door]
Tony Stark: All right, kid. Good luck out there.

However, the dialogue also managed to take a serious turn when theres a need to. For
example, another dialogue between Tony and Peter which emphasizes Peter facing his
responsibility as a superhero (Dialogue 1.2) and also to highlight how Peter was able to prove his
determination as a superhero to Tony Stark. (Dialogue 1.3)

Tony Stark: What if somebody had died? That's on you. What if you had died? That's on me. I
don't need that guilt on my conscience. I'm gonna need the suit back.
Peter Parker: For how long?
Tony Stark: For ever!
Peter Parker: I'm nothing without the suit!
Tony Stark: If you're nothing without the suit, then you shouldn't have it.

Dialogue 1.3

Tony Stark: [Towards Peter Parker] Sorry I took your suit. I mean, you had it coming. Actually, it
turns out it was the perfect sort of tough love moment that you needed, to urge you on, right?
Don't you think? Let's just say it was. Look, you screwed the pooch hard. Big time. But then you
did the right thing: you took the dog to the clinic, you raised the hybrid puppies... alright, not my
best analogy. I just wanted to mention that I think with a little more mentoring, you could be a
real asset to the team. There's about 50 reporters behind that door, real ones, not bloggers, so
when you're ready...
[Reveals the Iron Spider Armor]
Tony Stark: Why don't you try that on, and we'll introduce the world to the newest official
member of the Avengers: Spider-Man.

2. Characters
In terms of characters, Spiderman: Homecoming also succeeded in creating a very likeable main
character along with side characters such as Peters nerdy best friend , Ned and Michelle, a
charming yet anti-social tomboyish girl. Unlike in the Spiderman trilogy and Amazing Spiderman
movies, Tom Holland as Spiderman managed to emerge together both Tobey Maguires
Spiderman and Andrew Garfields Spiderman which creates a unique and witty character. The
combination of Tom Hollands charismatic performance and young age makes his version of
Peter Parker more convincing as a good natured kid whos in way over his head and a lighter
version of Spiderman. Spiderman is known for his wisecracks but when he takes off the mask, he
 tends to be grim and always worrying about bills and girls. However, the movie is a less
melodramatic and has a less depressed Spiderman. This makes sense as Spiderman is described
to be 15 years old and we can safely assumed that a 15 years old with Spiderman powers does
not go straight down to the power of responsibility.
3. Costumes
The spider-man gets his iconic costume from Tony Stark rather than designing himself. Though,
Starks version is full of cool new gadgets that Peter ever used onscreen before. While hes
testing the suit, Peter discovers something that Stark calls the training wheels protocol.
Unlocking it gives Peter even more abilities. The suit also has a heater, airbags, a parachute, and
a JARVIS-style talking A.I called Karen. It can also shoot all kinds of webs, including one that can
stun people, and one that shoots multiple strands at the same time in different directions. The
suit was also monitored by the Stark Industry Training Wheels Protocol, a program designed and
installed into the suit by Stark to restrict certain actions, as well as the Baby Monitor Protocol,
which tracked and recorded everything through the eye lenses.

Opinion

In my opinion, I really like this movie more than I expected because it somehow managed to combine
funny high school drama with action-packed in a superhero movie. While the first Spiderman trilogy and
the Amazing Spiderman movies are remarkable in their own ways, they also push Peter Parkers school
experience into the background and instead choose to focus more on their life as a full-fledged crime
fighter. However, it is very different of Spiderman: Homecoming movie as it took a completely opposite
approach as it operates as high school film first and MCU adventure second. The movie focuses on Peter
Parkers life as a he struggles to balance his life as a regular teenager and a 15 year old crime fighter. The
movie also keeps the joke concerning trials of teenage life which highlights Peter Parkers personality.
The movie smoothly weaves together comedic antics with sincere drama and character development
which differs from other Spiderman movies with their characters quickly evolved to full-fledged
superheroes. In this movie, Spiderman is still learning how to be Spiderman and is also learning to
conceal his identity which he miserably fails, adding to the comedic effects. For example, when Peter
Parker returned home and stealthy crawled into his room through the window since he lost his backpack
that contains his civilian clothes inside it. Once inside, it turns out that Ned, his roommate had been
there all along and witnessed his suit as well as the crawling on the ceiling. Peter tried to defend himself
but was not able to convince his friend otherwise. In order to make evident of the action part of the
movie, there was also a grave moment in which Spiderman fights with Vulture and when Spiderman
tries to hold together the Ferry.

Conclusion.

In conclusion, it is safe to say that the film maker is successful in creating a movie that is different from
any other Spiderman movies and a completely unique approach towards the making of a Spiderman
movie reboot. Spiderman: Homecoming works as both a funny high school comedy and strong stand
alone superhero movie that is enhanced by its cinematic universe components which something that
MCU films sometimes struggle with. The movie continues to evolve the MCU from a genre standpoint,
succeeding as a great high school comedy that just happens to be about Peter Parker and your friendly
neighborhood Spiderman. All in all, the producer of Spiderman: Homecoming, Watts, does a good job in
incorporating famous high school movies into the larger visual aesthetic of Spiderman: Homecoming.
While Homecomings set pieces arent as flashy or visually-dazzling as similar sequences featured in
Spider-Man movies past, this movie brings Spiderman more down to Earth in a sense. This, in turn,
better allows Homecoming to combine funny gags together with action-driven beats.
