This thesis reports on improvements in the response of Medipix based detec-

tor systems for studying different particles in the CMS experimental cavern at
CERN, Switzerland. The work presented here aims to extend the use of these
detectors in high energy and mixed field applications and conclude about their
significant applications in characterising mixed field radiation and for personal
dosimetry.

Medipix3RX is the latest version of hybrid pixelated detectors consisting of a

silicon sensor bump bonded to the ASIC front-end electronics. It was originally
developed for medical imaginary, but are now being widely used in many high
energy physics experiments. Electronics and readout of these detectors, which
were originally developed for the MARSTM 3D CT scanner, were modified for
their deployment in the CMS cavern.

The first part of the work was to study mixed field radiation at the Medipix
detector locations in CMS cavern by scoring particle tracks using FOCUS - a
CMS FLUKA package, and analysing their energy and angular distributions to
optimise detector design and response. Good agreement was observed between
average fluxes available on the RSP (web plotting) tool, predicted by standard
FLUKA methods and those obtained by integrating over FOCUS output data.

The second part of thesis work was to model the Medipix detector in FLUKA
using custom scoring for single event tracking of neutrons in the CMS cavern as
these trigger transient effects and cause permanent damage to electronics in the
long run. To detect neutrons, silicon detectors were covered by neutron con-
verters (Lithium Fluoride and Polyethylene for thermal below 100keV and fast
neutrons above 100keV respectively) which provide higher efficiencies at con-
verting neutrons to charge particles. Single event track analysis of the FLUKA
data was performed to separate neutron induced pixels from background by
applying suitable Medipix DAQ thresholds. A post processing algorithm was
developed for track construction and recognition using cluster analysis tech-
niques to determine the particle fluxes in the CMS cavern.

For real-time measurements of the spectral characteristics and composition of

radiation, the Medipix3RX mixed field silicon detectors with various neutron
conversion layers were successfully installed at: HFTOP platform (2), balcony
(3), blockhouse (1) and YE4 top (1) locations in the CMS cavern. The mea-
sured and simulated fluxes of neutrons were compared with those obtained with
RadMon detectors and were found to be in good agreement.

The capability of these Meidpix3RX devices to perform real-time measurements

of particle in mixed field will ensure direct flux and dose measurements and con-
trol the radiation of electronic and detectors.

The work reported in this thesis has been presented in the Medipix3 collabo-
ration meeting held at CERN, in three CMS-Collaboration weeks as well as at
the ISOTDAQ 2016 Workshop held in Rehovot, Israel.
